Ulf Samuelsson on Fast and Lindberg. He coached against them last season.

“ Both (Fast and Lindberg) are in a position where I think in a short period of time they can surprise some people and potentially push for positions here with the New York Rangers. ”

“ Both (Jesper Fast and Oscar Lindberg) are tremendous prospects, and I'm looking forward to watching their transition".

“ Realistically it probably requires some time in Hartford to get adjusted to the smaller ice surfaces and the quicker pace, but both players are tremendous prospects"

Now you're accusing me of saying things other people posted.

I never criticized managements judgement. I said I was disappointed in my OP, and I think our team is going to struggle in the tournament.

It matters what other teams do because they ALL are bringing guys with pro experience. Buffalo for example is bringing Pysyk, Grigorenko, Girgensons. All of these guys have been in the organization and met the coaching staff plenty of times. Pysyk has 20 NHL games under his belt, and Grigs has a bunch as well.

An introduction to the Rangers organization would be great if other teams were doing the same thing. They're not, so why should the Rangers?

When did Buffalo become the standard for developing prospects? Buffalo fans could easily say, "why are we inviting Girorenko and Pysyk? Look at what the Rangers did. Why aren't we doing what other teams are doing?" Buffalo can do what they want. But put their track record in developing prospects vs ours in the last 5 or so years. I know who probably has a better grasp on what the right thing to do is.

Lol Buffalo was the first team that came to mind. I didn't purposefully pick them. I could have chosen any team in the tournament and listed a group of prospects with NA Pro experience that will be participating.

My point was that every other team is doing it.

This makes sense... for younger prospects, guys who've played very few pro games and guys who haven't played in NA.

There is no reason to bring Dylan McIlrath (who's already played in it once, got loads of ice time in HFD last year after his return) or J.T. Miller (who played tons of games with the big club last year), both of whom we already know will get lots of PT in big league camp.

I agree that certain players don't need to be there. I just think that brushing the tournament aside as meaningless is a little too far in the other direction.

Fear of injury with a guy like McIlrath is a good possible reason though.

In 2011 Christian Thomas got absolutely destroyed by Brayden McNabb at Traverse. He wasn't the same for the rest of the tournament, and he followed it up with a craptacular OHL season.

They care about fielding a competitive team in that they hope what they have to work with is an inherently able and competitive group. They're not going to make roster decisions based on what will "win" us the tournament. If we totally crap the bed on the scoreboard but Jimmy Oligny does enough to earn a contract and eventually work his way up to the NHL level while Lindberg, Fast, and Kristo are a few weeks ahead in adapting and getting comfortable then it was a success.

Our prospect pool doesn't become better or worse because McIlrath did/didn't participate in the tournament.

"What they have to work with" is what they decided to bring. It's not like they're handed a list of players by some random exec and they go on their merry way. They made a collective decision to bring certain players and exclude others. Wanting to see the kids do well, and wanting to be a competitive team are not mutually exclusive.

I'd certainly argue that if McIlrath played and was regularly beaten by opposing forwards that our prospect pool with take a hit because of it. He's not there because the org feels like he's above that level. If he were to play and get abused, that would be cause for concern. Are we suddenly going to come out of TC with the best prospect group in hockey? Of course not, but if Malcom and Skapski are lights out against stiff competition like Dallas, then I'd feel at least mildly better about our organizational depth in goal. If Fast and Lindberg are overmatched, then I'll be a bit concerned. It goes both ways.

I dunno. If the point is that McIlrath shouldn't be there, then I agree. However, if the point is that the tournament is a side show and a good showing is meaningless, then I strongly disagree.

Other than some activity conditioning and visibility what exactly is at stake for teams at this tournament?

I really wish this was on TV. I understand it'll be streamed but that doesn't help if I'm not in front of a computer. I'm very interested in seeing a handful of these guys.

Fast is my #1. I've been on his bandwagon since we drafted him.

Nicholls who I just started to read about/watch on YouTube this summer. Love that he pulled a Malik.

Then of course Lindberg, Kristo, St Croix, Spelling. Throw in Allen and Noreau and I'm even more bummed that I doubt I'll be able to see much of this. October can't come soon enough.

Pretty upset I won't be able to see games one and two because of work. God damn real life responsibilities. Take me back to college!

Also upset McIlrath and Miller won't be there, but I'm excited to see some of these kids like Duclair step onto the ice to see what they can do.

Hockey is right around the corner!!

Work? Stream it at work. :D

Mackenzie Skapski was born on June 15, 1994.

In the one day before he was born, the Rangers were winning 1.000 Cups per day.

In the 7,000+ days since, the Rangers have won 0 Stanley Cups.

How could the Rangers draft such a jinx?

Wait a minute guys, I thought the stream was un-confirmed and is only a consideration by NYR. Someone posted source.

They really are great prospects and it will be extremely exciting to follow them. There are no guarantees, but both are up there with JT Miller, Kreider and McIlrath.

OL has a little questionmark on how his intensity/speed will match up on the smaller ice and Fasth just gotta stay healthy for a longer period of time so that he can build up his body and be in stellar shape.

Any info worth knowing on Jimmy Oligny? Got some OK numbers in the Q, also heard he's a 20 year old father.

There was another FB comment from the same guy that said it was misinformation and NYR is considering it. I would think Cerny would have tweeted it by now if there is a stream confirmed
Oh yeah, same page:

Hi Robert, we have passed along some misinformation. The New York Rangers hockey club was interested in live streaming, however it is just a consideration at this point. If that gets confirmed, we will let you know.

Rangers... amirite?

None of what you said is anything I disputed. They want the team to do well, of course. But they want the team to do well in that they want the team they assembled to do well. They're not going to invite certain players IN ORDER TO do well. Members of our organization sit down and formulate a team based on players the believe have something to gain from the experience. And then they hope the team they formed does well. They don't invite players for the sake of winning a biggest dick contest against other teams.

I'd certainly argue that if McIlrath played and was regularly beaten by opposing forwards that our prospect pool with take a hit because of it. Jeff Malcolm is an undrafted free agent signing by the Wolfpack. Makenzie Skapski is a 19 year old with zero experience beyond the WHL level. Our goaltending coaches have seen very little of these guys, presumably. Both have plenty to learn, plenty of people to meet, etc. Lindberg and Fast are in their first season with the team and in North America as a whole. They have all sorts of people to meet, could use the low-pressure environment to get their first few games in on the smaller ice surface, etc. These are guys with plenty of reasons to attend a tournament like this.

McIlrath knows the organization already. He's been a pro for a full year. He's done this tournament already. There is nothing the coaching staff can learn in 3-4 games like this that they can't learn about McIlrath otherwise. The coaching and scouting staff will learn far more about McIlrath in a month of training camp and pre-season games... games that will have actual NHL talent. THAT is where we will find out where he is in his development.

I dunno. If the point is that McIlrath shouldn't be there, then I agree. However, if the point is that the tournament is a side show and a good showing is meaningless, then I strongly disagree.

That's not what was said. At all. Not even close. The tournament is a good introduction to the organization for the new draftees. It's a good chance for guys like St. Croix and Kristo to meet the coaching staff, learn the basic team philosophies, and get ready for their first professional season. It's a chance for Europeans like Fast and Lindberg and Spelling to see what North American hockey is all about and carefully integrate themselves into the culture and team. It's a chance for guys on tryouts to impress the scouts and earn a contract down the line.

It's NOT a showcasing of top prospects just for the sake of flexing our muscles. The only reason anyone here cares is because the games are hopefully going to be streamed and 90% of us don't get to watch a lot of these guys otherwise. If they were live streaming every minute of training camp and/or MSG broadcasted every Hartford Wolfpack game nobody would care whether McIlrath or Miller or whoever else was in this particular tournament. Which is fine so long as we acknowledge that this is all it is and not that Dylan McIlrath has something important to learn from a tournament like this when he's going to be spending months playing against Stepan and Lundqvist and McDonagh in scrimmages every day and against other team's NHL caliber players and prospects in the pre-season.

in fairness so will kristo fasth and lindberg

the ncaa kids ARE eligible just have to pay their own way

There are other options.

They could also overthrow the government and pass new legislations on the issue. ;)
