hey, few people remember but Marchant did put up one 60pt season. Mostly he was around 30-40. he wasn't a plug. Just not reliable scorer and if he was he would have been an allstar.

But he scored the right times and I loved him just the same!

Theres few bigger moments in Oilers lore than the Marchant OT game 7 tally series winner.

ya i remember. He got the most out of his modest natural abilities. i just think rieder has a higher skill ceiling. whether he hits it is very questionable. as we all know there are so many variables (tangible and intangible, mental and physical) other than skill that lead to varying degrees of success (or failure).

Larsson looked really good on Sweden's top PP unit during the Worlds...not too sure why they aren't at least giving him a shot on the 2nd PP?

I've seen Rieder plenty. He doesn't have a higher skill ceiling than Marchant, pretty much the same. But not so bad if its a 40pt season with potential topping out at 60. Both Rieder and Marchant can play topsix and not look stupid doing it. Rieder is a marked improvement over some that have been filling in here and of course will be optimal with Draisaitl.

I think the idea is to use McDavid on his natural wing. It opens klefbom, drai and rnh for one time options. I suggested the oilers do this while watching the jets in the playoffs. They run 4 right shots on their top unit. Laine, buff and scheifele for one time options with wheeler (also a right shot) on his natural side as the QB setting them all up. Then whoever in front of the net. It was stastny for them at the time.

Removes Connor as a one time option but gives us three shooting options.

The devils also did something similar with Hall as their PPQB IIRC.
I could see this working then. Although I feel like I would like it better if it was Connor and 4 right shots but could be interesting.

That said it could completely change before game 1

These would be my 3 PP units in camp:

McDavid
Drai
Klefbom
Bouchard
Aberg

RNH
Lucic
JP
Benning
Jones

Benson
Strome
Yamamoto
Larsson
Bear/Garrison

Better balance of right and left shots and 2 dmen on each unit which makes for more options from the point and better passers on each unit.

I agree. But right now our best shooting options are left shot. I’m hoping that they double shift McDavid or drai on the 2nd unit in place of Caggiula

I don't mind having all of McDavid, Drai, RNH on one PP unit, even if it does mean moving McDavid to his natural wing.

The only issue I have is it should be Larsson (or Benning/Bear/Bouchard on the point), so they have the option to reverse direction and open up a one timer.

This would also let you have Klefbom &/or Nurse on the second unit playing off Puljujarvi's right handed shots.

My ideal

Lucic/Kassian/Brodziak(Net)
McDavid-Draisaitl-RNH
Larsson

Lucic/Rieder/Aberg/Brodziak(Net/Slot)
Puljujarvi-Strome-Nurse
Klefbom

Unit 1 focusing on moving the puck around from the open shot.

Unit 2 has a more traditional setup with Puljujarvi, Klefbom, and Nurse teeing away, with Strome and another crashing the net.

Sounds a lot like the swarm lol. The system could work, just as it could've worked under Eakins, if the players buy in and have the talent to pull it off. Eakins' team did not have the talent to play a system like this.

I don't understand why they need to have all of their best playmakers on one unit. Why not have RNH or Draisaitl anchoring his own unit?

I understand that they don't have many shooters to choose from but I'm not a fan of watching more games of the PP trying to pass it in the net. Give Pulju a shot on the top unit, he's the only one who historically has a shooting mentality. Coach him up on learning to utilize that weapon and put him in the one time spot.

Also, no Bouchard on either unit? I don't see how he can push for a roster spot if he's getting no PP time. That's the one aspect of his game that I'd consider to be remotely NHL ready right now.

Edmonton Oilers V2: Return of The Swarm ;)

In fairness I don't know that Strudwick would follow a hockey scheme if it was demonstrated on the Muppet Show to kids.

So that every scheme might sound the same to him.

Get puck, move puck quickly, not to other team. "OK, yeps, got it!"

"Chops puck to bits trying to handle it and turns it over to Staples..."

The swarm was a defensive system. This sounds like an offense type system.

Agreed it does sound a lot like this. I think Oilers can for sure benefit from the forecheck side of things. The speed of some of our players and the big bodies of others sound like it can make it work. I do wonder though if our slower players (specifically the forwards) will be able to keep up with the play consistently. There is a huge potential for counter attacks when pressing like this and they could be left behind pretty easily on those counters. I am interested to see exactly how its deployed in the upcoming preseason games. On the defensive side of things I am bit more concerned just due to the potential of an open man with the "flooding" of the puck and then this leading to a high quality chance against. With us already not being the strongest defensively it just makes me concerned about pressing the puck in the defensive zone because we got broken down pretty easily last year on the defensive side of the puck.

Jesus Christ. What's it going to take for Larsson to get a shot on our powerplay?

Wait, I already know the answer to that--McLellan getting fired.
