In this case I don't think there's any chacne they're breaking up last year's top-4. I think they are just taking advantage of their set-in-stone top-4 to give the 3 guys fighting for the other two spots a chance with a top guy to really see what each can do.

Probably, I am hoping Lilly breaks through. I thought he looked amazing with Muzzin, better than Holl. I believe I also saw some advanced stats which showed that pairing dominated, and Lilly had a phenomenal amount of ice time.

Gusev looked very MEH. Didn't do enough in my opinion.

Semyonov is intriguing. Kase looked good. Kampf is a solid defensive centre.

The AHL vets (Dahlstrom, Seney) kind of stink.

yeah I didn’t really like Gusev’s game much. I’m assuming he’ll get at least one more so we will see if he can raise his compete

No comparison Ho Sang to Gusev's 1st games.

Josh looked intersting and Gusev just looked small.
I would like to see Gusev on one of the top 2 lines for a game to see if his hockey IQ can make him useful in that role.

Based on:
1 exhibition game this year
38 Regualr season games and 7 playoff games last year
68 regular season games the year before
17 regular season and 2 playoff games with Nashville (healthy scratched for the others) the year before

He hasn't been an NHL caliber player for a long time, reputation is the only thing keeping him in the league. Even at his absolute best (30G 100+PIMS) he was a bad 5 on 5 player, now he's a complete train wreck 5 on 5 and the PP and toughness value have pretty much disappeared as well.

I thought he was decent for us, before he was injured. 5 goals in 12 games, hits, fights.... and then after he came back, your assessment would be correct.

I feel like pretty much all the new guys. Bunting, Kase, Ritchie, Kampf, Mrazek and Ho-Sang have all looked varying degrees of good, which bodes really well for us.

Tavares is back and looks good. Marner and Nylander look great. Matthews seems on track to maybe get preseason game in.

Mikheyev looks fantastic and I’m choosing to be optimistic he’ll find his timing.

Muzzin, Brodie and Rielly look ready to go. And Liljegren playing very well in his first.

It’s early, but lots of positives so far imo

He still has good hands around the net and can bring the hitting/fighting element.. I just don't think he's capable of doing it over a season any more.

He should be waived and called up/plugged into the lineup here and there to make sure he's impactful when he is in the lineup.

I think some of Gusev's skill was apparent, but his skating was so appalling, that he can't do anything with it at the NHL level.
Gusev also killed a lot of offensive zone time by firing low percentage shots from far out quite often, and sometimes when he wasn't even very pressured.

Personally don't see us actually signing him

Of all the new guys, I thought Kase was very impressive. Semyonov looked like he could be an NHL player if he gets a little more experience/time to adjust.

Like what I saw from Kase yesterday, and loved what I saw from Kampf.

I bet this fan base will love how reliable Kampf is.
He's a real specialist sire for surely. Just like them special doctors are. Now we gon see how he operates hard.

Bunting has been one of the realest thugs in these pre-games. Of course Ritchie's heavy weight has to be mentioned. Leafs people loved how that ol goon stepped in and defended our own fools. Ritchie surely has the tools. Dirt, that even rhymes.

Plenty of good pieces... I see this year as a number of items;

* Fixing the PP
* Finding out what we have with Liljegren and Sandin, hoping they are long-term D solutions for us, and effective at their spots.
* Marner figuring out how to be a complete NHL player, in all situations. He's been rightfully criticized, but he's also an elite player. Figure out how to be the guy that makes the PP work, be the guy who is as effective in the playoffs.
* Mikheyev learns to put the puck in the net
* Can Ritchie play like a wrecking ball in the corners, and plays hard in front of the net, while M&M make it happen.?

This is a very good team, despite the playoff failures.

Thought he was pretty crap for us to start the season. Got on a little streak and sucked when he came back. So either a short 12 game stretch is just a little hot streak or all other 33 games with us are just a cold streak.

Gusev, Semyonov, Seeney, Dahlstrom, and Amadio (skating is brutal) can all go find somewhere else to play. If Ho-Sang is consistent through camp, Mikheyev should have about 10 regular season games to earn a top-6 spot, or honour his trade request. Guy is Jason Blake 2.0. Speed and excitement with no finish

Some of us are acting like there's some magic developmental dust that MLSE will activate Ho-Sang's untapped potential. It's clear that the Islanders' organization is more than capable of teaching pro hockey players how to play the game. Key to lock is held by Ho-Sang himself.

Most pro players who were stars at every level before the NHL level have to swallow that bitter pill requiring them to fill roles rather than being the guy.

Is it fair to say that this is the deepest camp the Leafs have had?
I know it's only been two pre-season games but they are going to have some tough decisions.

I think people heard him speak about his journey, saw the humility, and saw that he fit nicely next to Tavares in a game. He took instruction well from Johnny on ice, as well.

It’s true that only he can take the next step or not, and maybe the Leafs will be rewarded for giving him the opportunity

Muzzin has a history of making any partner he plays with better / look better which is the perfect situation for Liljegren imo.

Despite the tough matchups he would face Muzzin has a few years left of being able to carry that type of pairing.

Throwing Holl back into that spot would be a huge waste of a development opportunity for Liljegren to become a solid top 4 defensemen by playoff time.

If you get 20-30 games in and he's getting caved in then fine, but at least give it a shot.

....you literally just described why Leafs are giving him a PTO. Ho Sang is giving off the impression he has the "key" to fix the issues that plagued him in the past.

Some of "us" are taking PTOs a little too seriously this off-season.

Let Lilly get his feet wet on the bottom pair like any other rookie.

No reason to put a rookie on your top matchup pair.

I really hope they go with 7 D and use Dermott/Lilly/Sandin more or less equally when all are healthy. Maybe even the odd game with 11 F/ 7 D. There's not a 13th F that I care enough about to send one of those 3 to the AHL / Pressbox indefinitely.

Is it also fair to say this team has the most holes to fill?

Leafs entire LW side is a who's who top to bottom of job openings and positions needing filling.

We have players on PTOs, Group VI career minor league free agents, and former RFA non qualified by their teams all jockeying for positions including 2 in Leafs top 6.
