Siegel wrote an article on what he has seen from the PP so far in camp. He says Marner looks to be in the bumper spot. Nylander takes over Marner's spot last year on the half wall. Matthews on the other flank. Tavares right now is on other units but says most likely he will be in net front on PP1.

I like it but seems crazy it took a new coach to figure this out.
The fans seem to figure this shit out 18 months before some of our management/coaching staff.

So with Mikky taking over Engvall's slot, Robertson is getting a look in Mikky's slot with Kerfoot-Nylander, while Gogolev gets into Robertson's slot with Amadio-Spezza.

And with SDA playing again tonight, Abramov moves into his previous slot in between Cllune and Gabriel.

I find it interesting that they will be two games into pre-season and the D pairs are still Muzzin-Liljegren and Brodie - Sandin.

I like it. One vet on each pair. You can play each pair more. Less wear on Muzzin.

saw some good stuff on Saturday

Mikheyev didn't look anything like the guy from last year, solid game, very physical and oh those wheels. Sweet move on the shootout, I like what Ilya brought to the table. Hope he keeps bringing that sort of Krieder lite.

Bunting, never knew anything about this guy, watched his highlights which were good and they show off his really sweet mitts, but it's the little things he did on Saturday, the hockeyQ, the net front presence and then all 200 feet every shift, I mean what's not to like. Small sample size for sure but if he keeps it up, there is no way he comes off the captains LW. Colour me pleasantly surprised!

Ho-Sang, he made a couple of defensive plays that were really heads up, you can see how skilled he is but he really needs to make quicker decisions in using his linemates, could of been a little bit of jitters trying to impress and trying not to make any mistakes. The one he did make ended up in the Leaf net, I still say give him another game with JT to see if there is improvements, there might be a place for him in the top 15 maybe even 12, 6? If Ho-Sang can be trusted to kill penalties and it's a big if, does that move Engvall one step closer to the door? You can never have enough offensive abilities through all 4 lines.

Muzzin has been eating spinach again and wearing a secret "S" on his chest, wow I didn't know he had those kind of skills.

Willie like Muzz was a man amongst boys, no more need be said.

Kurtis Gabriel? will he be the Leafs Guardian Angel this year? The feet were a little slow, but his hands are really pretty good puck handling and not just fighting, could take a little pressure off of Simmonds

Robertson, man he can fly and the shot!!! but he needs to calm down on the ice, like Vintage said he's trying to do too much, once he slows the game down in his head he's going to be very dangerous, hopefully it doesn't take too long for him to figure things out, he was caught out of position a few times which cost chances and for a highly offensive guy you just can't do that

In this case I don't think there's any chacne they're breaking up last year's top-4. I think they are just taking advantage of their set-in-stone top-4 to give the 3 guys fighting for the other two spots a chance with a top guy to really see what each can do.

With Woll day to day and Scott injured for who knows how long this is probably just a placer holder. Could be an AHL signing if he does well... but he has awful stats over the last few years so seems unlikely he's anything more than just a warm body for camp.

A lot of guys on tonight's roster who should be cut first thing tomorrow. Seney, Dahlstrom, and Simmonds were all brutal. I also thought Dermott and Holl were very poor for guys who have seen action in the top 4 for stretches of time. If it were up to me, Liljegren and Sandin have the inside track to be Muzzin's partner/on the bottom pair respectively. Rubins was also not noticeable which is a good thing I guess? Menell looked like a gamer. SDA had some moments where his IQ and passing ability really shined, Marner was the best forward on the ice after the first period and Brooks looked like he should make the team.

I think if Liljegren continues to outplay Holl in preseason (though to be fair I doubt anyone could have looked good playing with Dahlstrom) they could break up the second paring. I'm thinking the team could look at a trade for one of Holl or Dermott

The hesitance to use Spezza in any roll other than 4RW is going to make it impossible to ice a strong bottom six.

Kampf isn’t good enough to run a 3rd line, he’s a defensive 4C. You can build a shutdown 4th line around him, but Spezza can’t be on that line.

4th line becomes a blender and the 3rd line is role players playing above their heads.

No chance Simmonds gets cut. He’s actually taking a back seat to all these try out guys. He didn’t have much ice time tonight. If he was auditioning they would have given him tons of minutes and time with Mitch.

So the best thing about the 2gms so far, imo, is that Bunting and Kase both look like legit good players. That answers most all of our questions if they can keep that up.

Also nice to see Mikheyev playing like a man possessed, and Ritchie looked decent as well.

Lilly looking good is also nice but I was pretty sure he would.

Ritchie ------ Matthews ----- Marner
Nylander -- Tavares --------- Kase
Bunting ----- Kerfoot ----- Spezza
Mikheyev ----- Kampf ---- Simmonds
(Engvall)

Rielly ----- Brodie
Muzzin ------- Holl
Dermott ---- Liljegren

Campbell
Mrazek

Let's go let's start the season.

Yup, that looks like the most likely lineup unless Robertson really turns some heads next game.

I'd make slight changes personally, and they'd depend on Ho-Sang doing well. 4th line is legit shut-down. Mikheyev might not like it, but that's a good defensive line. Ho-Sang and Spezza rotate in and out. Alternatives instead of Ho-Sang could be Brooks (I like Brooks, personally) or Simmonds.

Yeah not bad but I would be surprised if Ho-Sang was better than Spezza tbh.

From what I've seen so far this is what I would do:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Nylander-JT-Kase
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Spezza
Ritchie-Kampf-Ho-Sang

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Liljegren
Sandin-Holl
Menell (Dermott traded)

Campbell
Mrazek

Never read too much into preseason games. Some guys always take longer to warm up

That said, Dermott had a few brain farts this game that could have been avoided

He also pulled a sweet spin-o-rama play coming out of his own end. The guy's got some good tools but to this point it hasn't added up to an above average player.

there is no chance Ritchie plays 4th line. He actually showed some very early signs of some chemistry with marner

Based on one exhibition game?
Based on:
1 exhibition game this year
38 Regualr season games and 7 playoff games last year
68 regular season games the year before
17 regular season and 2 playoff games with Nashville (healthy scratched for the others) the year before

He hasn't been an NHL caliber player for a long time, reputation is the only thing keeping him in the league. Even at his absolute best (30G 100+PIMS) he was a bad 5 on 5 player, now he's a complete train wreck 5 on 5 and the PP and toughness value have pretty much disappeared as well.
