Based on the showings thus far, my lineup would definitely be as follows when everyone is healthy:

Ritchie-Matthews-Marner
Bunting-Tavares-Nylander
Kerfoot-Kampf-Micheyev
Simmonds-Brooks-Spezza
Kase

The 3rd line would be our checking line with some skill and shutdown capabilities. Ho-Sang should be signed to a contract and start in the Marlies. He has some definite skill and will help on the PP. If Ritchie doesnt work out move him down in the lineup and bring up Ho-Sang for a look on the top line. The kid can play.

Kase is playing. He isn't the 13th forward

ritchie matthews marner
bunting jt nylander
kerf kampf soupy
spezza brooks kase

13th: simmonds
1st call up with injury: ho-sang

I also think I prefer gabriel as our 13th instead of simmonds tbh, but they aren’t gonna drop simmonds.

It’s a shame we dont have more room, because I really like the idea of both ho-sang and gabriel getting nhl games with us. they bring the right kind of attitude imo.

Are our defense lines set?

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Dermott Liljegren
Sandin

I'm not so sure 6 & 7 are solidified at this point.

It's pretty simple, sign Ho-Sang to a one way NHL contract, at $750k. He gets paid no matter where he plays.
Wouldn't that make him easy to claim on waivers for a team that may have interest?

One-way veruss two-way doesn't actually impact waivers. Ho-Sang is of the age/experience where he isn't waiver exempt - so if they sign him to an NHL deal, two-way or one way - and send him down he will need to go through waivers.

If they sign him to an AHL contract first - then sign him to an NHL contract when they want to call him up(?) I believe he can slide through without waivers.

Dermott has been RD in every preseason game so far so it looks like unless something changes that is where hes going to start - which pushes Liljegren out and Sandin comes in on 3LD. Wouldn't be shocked if Mennell/someone else is the 7D, and liljegren goes back to the Marlies and comes up once an injury occurs.

It doesn't have any impact on the mechanics of waiver eligibility, but can have an impact on claim attractiveness for a budget conscious team.

I have a feeling they will be rotated in and out early in the season and their respective performances over the first 20~ games will solidify where they stand

Thats what I said. A low salary would make him easy to claim on waivers for a team that has interest.

Kase is going to play in the top 9. You’re also missing Ho-Sang making the squad.

Bunting-Matthew’s-Marner
Nylander-Tavares-Ho Sang
Ritchie-Kerfoot-Kase
Mikheyev-Kampf-Spezza
Simmonds

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Dermott

Mrazek
Campbell

Mikheyev/Kase/Bunting/Ritchie/Ho Sang all interchangeable through the season.

I’ll easily take Simmonds as 13th forward over Gabriel. That’s not even a choice
Downside to a cap world is the easy or obvious decisions may not happen.
Right or wrong, those who are waiver exempt may be sent down for the short term.

I think Ho Sang gets signed but I'm not convinced he starts with the Leafs

Fun quiz game:

Not using advanced stats, just straight goals/60. Ranking last year on pure goal scoring production last year:

1. (Leafs mystery player)
2. Laine
3. Mantha
4. Backstrom
5. Suzuki
6. Konecny
7. Malkin
8. Kuznetsov
9. Benn
10. Kopitar

Guess the mystery Leafs player.

Hint, he's not in the top 6 or named Spezza.

Kase is way better than Simmonds and Micheyev. I'd be shocked if he isnt in the starting lineup
