In light of Lav actually speaking to a specific player in camp (Laf starting on the right), which is kind of an oddity for any opening presser, but more so considering he is a new coach and doesnt really know any of the players/lines, etc...

Can we dare reopen the Laf thread and actually talk about it?

is it that odd? he was specifically asked about laf, and laf improving is a huge bonus for the team. He was also asked about panarin back checking (panarin wasnt specifically mentioned by name).

Probably not, I’ll just post a 100 facts about how laf can still be a great player and then get into an argument with someone who knows nothing about hockey. Then get banned from that thread for a week or so. Vicious cycle

It's so refreshing to finally have a coach that is well articulated, can talk to reporters in a respectful way and is very clear in his communication. We haven't had this since Torts left.
This goes back to my point a few pages back about what this group needs.

They are an intelligent, introspective core that needs an articulate coach who can speak to them in that manner. Not someone who just barks orders or takes a laissez-faire approach. An actual brain that communicates outside of the hockey stuff, as well as concerning individual play, systems, etc.

Quinn was very articulate but was green in his role as a rookie coach. I think he quickly lost the room because his tactics were too black and white. And he overcommunicated. Lav has coached almost 1,600 games and understands what it takes to win it all. He spoke about that briefly. I think hell learn what this team responds to.

Its also important to note that he was gushing over the conversations he had with Trouba. I know everyone likes to poke fun at Trouba, but he is a very intelligent dude who cares. I could see him being very open and honest with Lav and that could prove to be a very valuable relationship that Lav taps throughout his tenure here, because hes the type of coach who will listen, absorb the information and put it to use when needed.

The days of the old school Keenan, Sutter and Babcock's are over. Players dont respond to the hard lining bark masters for long. Lav has got a nice blend of old school and new and I also think his assistants will be a great help as well. Im hoping.

Am I looking into things too deeply?

I do not remember players getting tested like this for a loooong time.

I haven't had a performance review at work in like 5 years, since my employer decided to abandom them.

Expecting big things from breadman this year!

squatting 135? that's cute

This isn't a working set lol.

They're almost certainly testing force/velocity production at that resistance. You don't want to load up a bar with too much weight and 135 is something that everyone should be able to get up quite easily (thus, its a nice baseline weight to use across the board.)
