GDT: Four Nations Face-Off

I was just listening to The Athletic podcast dedicated to the tournament. They were saying that neither diehards or casual fans have gotten excited for this tournament. I thought I was in the minority but I am so meh on the whole thing. The NHL season is already way too long and this just extends it even further.

Actually Hughes not playing bothers me. This puts more pressure on Z. HCDE has already been loading his minutes and he doesn't get the same break the rest of the team gets. I am just hoping he stays healthy and isn't overworked so he is fresh when league play starts up again. We will see but not setting my DVR nor planning my life around seeing these games. I will be at pickleball tonight and have indoor cycling tomorrow night. Monsters playing meaningful games on Saturday and Sunday and the Buckeyes host Wisky Friday and Saturday amongst a lot of good college games.

Hey, Finns, why don’t you produce good right handed hockey players? I saw something about your whole team being left stick people, with Laine being one of the few exceptions.

While I do think it’s kind of a burden to have this tournament now, instead of in the summer or right before camp,(or just waiting for the Olympics) I am very excited for it.

I love best on best. This is what an actual “all star game” is.

Yes I’m concerned about Werenski getting injured. But let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

I know one other person other than me that excited for this. So I bet the ratings are terrible. But that’s what happens when you pigeon hole a tournament in the middle of your season with very little promotion until the month of the event.

Oh well. I’m rooting for Werenski to do well, despite my rooting interests being cloudy. But I will in the end find myself rooting for Team USA. It should be a fun tournament.

You do know only 10-15% of the world's population is left handed? In most of the world, left handers shoot righty and right handers shoot lefty. The US is the odd ball because we have baseball.

I'm so excited for this tournament. There hasn't been any sort of best on best play in so long, so any sort of flaws with this little tournament have not really mattered to me. Compared to the usual all star weekend stuff this will be way more entertaining.

If Finland's new coach is as systemic as Jukka Jalonen, Finland is a dark horse even though they have the weakest roster.

True, the tournament will be played in the USA and Canada and not in Slovakia, where the Finns have won two titles out of three since 2000. 😼

Yes, my righted American kids shoot left, and they can poke check like you wouldn’t believe, because I understand hockey.

But Finland has Finnish baseball. So they should be sort of like us. And the Canadians have plenty of right shot guys.

I'm pretty excited for the event. And CBJ needed the break, so it falls at a decent time for a reset. Like everyone else, I hope Werenski plays well but doesn't get further run down.

I think a lot of people will hop on board once we get a couple games in.

Doing it in the winter rather than the summer may have some challenges but its much better from my perspective. This is a winter sport and I want my best on best international tournaments in the coldest days of the year.

It's pretty much replacing the all star break + bye week so from that perspective I don't think it's much more disruptive. Really fantastic break that we should do at least every couple years, or maybe every year. Just add "Athletes from Russia" and maybe a Euro club next time.

former jackets legend and draft pick, Veeti Vainio, says “hi !! “

The important thing is that only Werenski will play in the tournament, so the players will get some rest. Besides, thanks to him the injured players may miss less as they will have time to rehabilitate.

I just hope that Zach will come back healthy.

That was such an awesome game. I can't wait for tomorrow, so excited to see how USA looks. Finland is the weakest team on paper but with Saros in net anything can happen. Werenski with McAvoy is going to be really cool to see, and I really like the USA forward group.

You couldn't script a better opening goal for the tourney. A highlight-reel goal involving McDavid, Crosby and MacKinnon is exactly the type you hope these best-on-best tourneys bring out.
That pass and goal was a jaw dropper for sure.

I’ve never cared much for Crosby, but I don’t live under a rock when it comes to acknowledging his skill/Canada contributions.

I was a bit worried Canada was going to run away with it and that the game would turn out to be a dud — but seeing Sweden battle back to make it a game/push into OT was quite entertaining!

I had almost no interest in the tourney. In fact, I was a bit pissed that my hockey "fix" wasn't going to met for a few weeks.

I tuned in last night because I was sick of doing some work tasks and I now plan to watch every game that I can:laugh: The level of play was sensational and it's really cool to watch the best forwards in the world try to mesh as lines when they haven't played with one another.
