My hot take... Barrie is overpaid MUCH less than Nurse.Nurse is overpaid but he's not what's preventing us from upgrading our roster. It's the 4.5 million going to bottom pair dman Tyson Barrie, the 2.75 million going to 4th line winger Warren Foegele, and the bloody 4.2 million in dead cap, along with poor choices in past seasons such as the Zack Kassian contract and taking on the Duncan Keith cap dump while giving up assets. Hyman and RNH contracts are at high risk of turning into millstones by the end of their contracts too. Nurse is overpaid by what, like 20% at best? That 1.5-2 million dollar upgrade isn't the end of the world considering his role. Now The bottom pair dman/4th line winger getting overpaid that much, now that's a problem.
You can say that about any contract on the team. I don't think Nurse is even our most overpaid guy, so its always interesting to see this point come out when there are others we should be more critical of.
Nurse is only in the "how did he get that contract" stage of discussions because people are morons. If you ask most people who hate Nurse, the reasons they give are easy to disprove. That's especially the case with casual fans. He's 1 - 1.5M overpaid, and we know why he got that - because he took bridges while management was trying to figure out if he was going to improve enough to surpass Klefbom, or if he was going to settle in as a 2nd pair guy. They did this all the way up to UFA status for him, and if they didn't extend him, he would have tested free agency in the most recent off season. So he left money on the table for the team already, there was no reason for him to yet again. Especially when he was a top 10 defenseman 2 years ago. Hell, even last year, when he put up fewer points, people get all over him, but he still fulfills the most important part of a #1 defenseman. He eats a ton of minutes and comes out ahead against top competition. He puts up top pair even strength point production. Would probably top 45 points if he got more powerplay time. Oiler fans need to stop searching for a scapegoat,
So which is it. A low end 1, or a #3. It's the earlier. He succeeds in those many minutes. He is out there for more goals for than against. He's marginally overpaid based on what similar defenders were paid at around the same time. He isn't the issue at all.He had 1 season in a really weird year where he was good offensively.
Nurse is arguably a low end #1. I have 15-20 defenders ahead of him pretty easily. It is what it is, lets just hope he can improve from what we saw last year.
At the end of the day Nurse is a high event defender who benefits from high end linemates but allows a crap ton of chances. He is an extremely high event defender who is an athletics beast. He can play tons of minutes but doesn't really mean he should be. He is overpaid cause our dcore isn't good and he carries it, but on a good dcore he is probably a #3 guy.
He isn't the issues with our dcore but if he was as good as his contract suggest, it wouldn't be as bad.
If anything your proved my point a bit more, Weegars contract is miles better than NurseAnalytics God Weegar: 2.46 xGA/60

edit: To really put that into context, that means Weegar is on the ice for 1 full expected goal against less every 857 minutes of 5v5. That's about 50 games of playing 18 minutes of 5v5 per night.
Nurse has already had the best season he will ever had and it’s an overpay based on that so I mean…unless Nurse is an undisputed top 5 defender in the league, it’s a terrible contract. You’d think it would be fair to let the guy play at least one second on the contract before declaring him overpaid. Probably too rational a thought for some around here though.
Im betting this year were going to see the team improve defending as a group and along with that more support for Nurse.
Like you said, we all know he’s over paid AAV wise by probably about 1-1.5M and they definitely shot themselves in the foot bridging him to UFA but context is important and the Klefbom situation is a big turn. If injuries don’t suddenly derail Klefboms career forcing the team to rely more on Nurse, he likely doesn’t have the monster shortened season he had. The situation also completely destroyed any leverage they had, your #1 defender retires suddenly one offseason then the next your #3 defender doesn’t want to re-sign, it puts you in a tough spot.
In hindsight they probably should of let him play out last season and signed him this off-season when so many teams were cap strapped but it would of been a huge risk, imagine our blue line if Nurse walked this summer.
Last year his goal share 5v5 was negative (barely) and that was with heavy McDavid minutes. He was on the ice for 1 more goal for than against. A legit #1d shouldn’t be pretty much breaking even, you want more out of your defenders. When you are paying 9mill for a d, you need far more than not even breaking even 5v5 when most of your icetime is with McDavid. So which is it. A low end 1, or a #3. It's the earlier. Guy had a pretty decent plus minus for someone who barely broke even 5 vs 5.Last year his goal share 5v5 was negative (barely) and that was with heavy McDavid minutes. They are both overrated, one is on a much better contract and have similar results.Who’s to say the Weegar isn’t going to regress after he doesn’t have the vaunted Panthers lineup to make him look better?
Can’t believe I’m defending Nurse, but Weegar is getting incredibly overrated here. Sounds like CP

Wants to be among the people, can't always be a star or he's going to start acting, so he's blending in for a role.A house in my neighborhood was getting heating work done today. The service person was a doppelganger for Leon. Maybe he needs a side hustle to make up for his modest salary.
“They”Sure, sure, that’s what they all say.
“They”
That’s rich
I didn’t realize you were THE tier 1 fan I was supposed to impress
My mistake (I am a tier two fan after all. I can only afford 2 or 3 2k trips a year to see games)
Anyhoo
I get it
Sarcasm isn’t your forte.
My comment was less about Weegars contract and more about Nurses contact… and our cap situation
But
You know what they say about sarcasm…
Right?
Or should I slow things down for you?
Let me know
Easy to spot someone from calgarypuck with too much time on their handsSure, sure, that’s what they all say.
Hamblin and Broberg make the big club, along with Holloway of course
Honestly big props to Hamblin, long odds, but found a way

Hamblin has a higher cap hit than Malone, so I'm not sure. I think a trade is in the worksCould just be a cap move. There's still a scenario where Broberg starts in the American league.
I'll take your word for it. I've already exceeded my own level of cap management knowledge with my last post.Hamblin has a higher cap hit than Malone, so I'm not sure. I think a trade is in the works
Lol trust me I'm there with you, just parroting what DNB said on twitter about Hamblin's cap hit and my inference about a moveI'll take your word for it. I've already exceeded my own level of cap management knowledge with my last post.
