Really wanted Petrov to somehow be good enough to be Drais RS LW
NHL seems to be even harder to break in to than before. Strangely. With mire teams, and more rooster spots avaliable. I suspects that this new skating era is killing a lot of players.

You have to be an elite skater to make it. A good defensive game. And having a great shot, and physichs.
Otherwise, you will not make it

Seth Griffith put on waivers, maybe there’s a few other cuts coming today?
I haven’t seen anything from Griffith this training camp. I thought he was good in his like 1 call up last year. Thought he should of called up more last year after a great AHL year. Really thought he would show more.

Some tidbits from Nugent-Bowman's recent article in the Athletic about the pre-season so far I thought I'd share for non-subscribers.

The frustrating thing about it is there's no definitives yet. Maybe because Nugent-Bowman doesn't know yet from management but some of these should be for sure in my mind.

"1. Dylan Holloway is closing in on a roster spot". He has to have that locked at this point.

"2. Philip Broberg needs to get going"

"3. Jake Virtanen’s time is running out."
I feel like it should already be done.

"4. Demers remains in tough."
Should be done like Virtanen.

"5. Stuart Skinner is ready."

"6. Power-play quarterback is up for grabs."
He mentioned how good it looked two games ago with Bouchard.

"7. A shout-out for Luke Esposito."
Could get NHL contract if he continues in the AHL.

"8. Warren Foegele and Jesse Puljujarvi are trending up."
Their last games were their best.

"9. Kailer Yamamoto and Ryan McLeod are primed to break out."

"10. Benson won’t quit."
This one is the most frustrating to me. He doesn't think Benson makes it and is still a call up which is insane to me after this pre-season.

Sorry if this is too long, thought some people might appreciate it.

How likely is it that Bouchard takes over on the 1st pp this year?
Did somebody say Poll? (Sounds like a skip the dishes advert)…

Virtanen played his way out, so it's not a surprise that he's likely gone.
I like Demers so far and wouldn't mind seeing him on a cheap contract. Esposito should get an NHL contract based on alone so that we don't have to hear Bob yap about Esposito only being on an AHL contract over and over again. Benson has impressed me a lot, but the poor guy still has it tough to make it on the 4th line. Still think he should be on there based on his improved skating and shooting.

It's nice to see that the Oilers have significant depth, where it's gonna be tough to slot players.

No mention of Niemelainen isn't fair to that player. He should only be a half step behind Holloway for having a roster spot with Broberg and other obviously struggling.

lol can you ever stop yourself from hating Broberg long enough not to bring him up in every other thread? What exactly has NIemo done to be a half step behind Holloway?

All good points, especially 1, 7, 8, 9, 10

Played consistently well. Scored. Hit and has been a physical beast... Hell he is even obviously skating better than Broberg who's only thing was skating...

My post isn't about Broberg sucking, and he has obviously sucked this preseason, it's how great Niemelainen has been.

I only tossed in Broberg's name because it's the easiest most obvious name. But he has been the best depth defender to date in the preseason.

His name should be clearly at the top of the pile past the obvious regulars.

Not fair that others, not just Broberg, seem to be in the conversation to make the team over him as much as it seems.

Still lots to go before puck drop. Things could easily change and Broberg, or others, could still easily surpass him but I feel Niemelainen is not getting enough credit as he should.

Niemo scored one goal in like the first minute of the first game against AHLers and has done nothing offensively outside of that. He hits. Thats his bread and butter that he has over other defenseman but he also handles the puck like a grenade and ices the puck wayyyyyyyyy more often than he needs to. He hasn't done anything to separate himself from the pack and definitely hasn't been a standout like Holloway.

None the less he’s outplayed Broberg handidly.

Do you mean the Nugent-Bowman article? I think there is some mention of him I can look if you'd like?

I've only seen bits and pieces of the games but Broberg always impresses me, I think he brings way more to the table than Nemo. He just needs time to gain some confidence in the NHL, but I think he's ready. If Murray is going to start the season as the number 6, I would send Broberg down and keep Nemo up, assuming that doesn't mess up the cap somehow.

None of these are super surprising but good information none the less.

In regards to Benson, I think hes probably the #13/14 forward.

McDavid
Draisaitl
Kane
Hyman
RNH
Yamamoto
McLeod
JP
Holloway
Foegele
Janmark
Ryan

Thats basically the top 12 forwards I think the team sees. Hard to really argue.

Shore and Benson are probably the #13/14.

I think on a 23 man roster, theres a chance that he makes this team. But I think this teams going to be running a 20/21 man roster due to the cap. I dont really see Benson cracking a spot, but he is playing well and glad that he is.

All valid points..just don't agree with the label on point #6.

McDavid is the PPQB... PP point shot option however is up for grabs

You don't care about Niem. You just care about hating Broberg. Broberg played weak at the beginning but half way through last night he did very well.

He doesn't know nor does he care. He just cares about hating Broberg.

No he hasn't. The only reason everyone here gets excited about him is his hitting. His puck skills are terrible and not NHL quality yet. He ices the puck too much and he doesn't think when he goes for the hit at times. He needs more work on his decision making

Yes he has. Even Stauffer said as much on the broadcast last night.

Halfway through the game, when Broberg settled down and he started playing well, he stopped. Who else played the most in the game other than Broberg?
