They have clearly separated into 2 real groups. Guys with an NHL chance, and guys without. So just imagine the entire second group as cut but still practicing in town.

Still a decent number of preseason games left.

Even if they already have a solid idea of who's in and out, there shouldn't be much motivation to play the "ins" more than 1 or 2 games to shake of the rust. Why risk the injury?

Especially when you have the infrastructure to manage two different groups easily. It's not like they're cutting into each others' ice/practice time.

Nothing set in stone according to coach

Gazzola asks about the 2 seperate groups:

Woodcroft: "We have some great individual performances from players you refer to as depth pieces, and are still very much competing for a position. You can't practice is 35-40 people on the ice and get meaningful accomplishment....so yeah that means there is another group, but we've let those players know that doesn't mean anything; that's just a starting point for practice. What's most important is how people show during games."

We'll see if there's any truth to that, but it's still a 35 man roster, with multiple vacant positions that are yet to be earned

That's an option, but with the way Virtanen has looked, I'd say it's time for our pro scouts to earn their paycheck and find some better guys on waivers.
I want to pick someone off of waivers this year and I take it we are way down the list of teams that can put in a claim because we made the conference finals.

The only way we'll get someone good is to catch a club "sneaking down a player that is unproven at the NHL level who is a hidden gem" while the other clubs are still evaluating their own talent and making decisions with their own bloated rosters.

Can our pro scouts identify the hidden gems and will our honorable GM cash in if they can.

I have a question. If we lose a player to waivers do we bump up the list of teams that can put in claims?

I've noticed him breaking up some plays and playing a somewhat conservative game up to this point, but he doesn't stand out beyond that despite the powerplay time.

I'm sure we'll get an idea what Woody is thinking on the player further into camp after more viewings.

Nope to your question.

Speaking of pro scouts, after Brad Holland was promoted to assistant GM didn't he mention that he wanted to bring in more pro scouts? When I go to the Oilers site, our pro scouts are still just Paul Messier and Chris Chichoki.

Through 3 games only 2 players have significantly improved their chances of being on the opening night roster and that is Holloway and Niem. Which over the last 5 games could easily change.
I would give Benson some outside chance. League min. Contract and even on the 3rd game in 4 nights his speed was good. He had a hell of a summer for his skating skill and speed.

It's too bad Lavoie isn't participating at all. I was excited to see what he can do. I still have hopes for him.
He is still a massive work in progress and probably a few years away from being even an NHL call up.

Didn't we just hire someone from CBJ?

Feels like Woodcroft already has the roster figured out.

I feel like Jay knows Broberg isn’t quite ready to make the show but is getting some pressure from up top. Murray has been better in every way this preseason and should absolutely have a spot on the third pairing (at least) thus far.

I guess the other question is when does Bakersfield camp start? It might just make more sense to have everyone here so that at least guys are practicing everyday.

I still don't know if he officially has to play the first game or not, but the CBA could be forcing everyone's hand. At least maybe for the first game.

Another question I do have once we get into the season. Say Murray does in fact take over a spot on the bottom pairing. Who is our best bet to be our #7 d-man? I don't know that I really want any of Broberg, Niemo or Samourkov in that spot.

For 7th D I have Niemo in front of the other 2 just due to the physical aspect (could come in handy against a team like Calgary). I don’t really trust any of the aforementioned players logging more than a few minutes per night though.

Naw. Woodcroft has seen and utilized the player more than anybody. Holland is always very clear about his role and that of the coach. He's not going to create a rift or mistrust with his head coach on a rising hockey team over a young d-man or specifically a 3D position on a strong team. Woodcroft played Broberg top line minutes in the A knows and trust his game.

Training camp is where roster battles are to be played out. Holland and Woodcroft have both spoken about their opinion that Broberg would have to play his way off the team. It's simply just great competition to see a more mature Niemelainen with a specific skill set elevate into a battle for a roster spot. Makes the team and organization better to have upward mobility pushing for jobs.

Broberg hasn’t played his way out of the spot but he has so far done nothing to keep it.

Are we going to see Griffith or Bailey play? Surely they‘ve got a chance to show more on RW than Shore or Virtanen. I hope management is watching the waiver wire cuz Our right side looks weak! Hope Bourgault adapts to the pro game quickly
