His exact words were “Broberg clearly has the most upside of any D prospect in the oilers oragnization. However based on their performance so far in camp. Niemalainen has been the better player.”

He wasn’t just ripping him for a bad period. Niemalainen has straight up had a better camp.

I don’t really care too much about puck skills for our 6-7 guy. It’s low on my priority list. He’s been better defensively than broberg. He’s positionally better, he’s been better around our net, he’s been better at getting in shooting lanes. He’s just straight up been better. Broberg has been all over the place. Some nice flashes but some disastrous stretches.

I did mean the article. I was looking around and while I didn't find that article (pay wall and all) I did find other articles and most those mention how great Niemelainen is doing.

I just really hope the Oilers actually reward him for his good play. It seems painfully obvious to most that our best team, as seen so far, includes Niemelainen and Murray as our 6/7.

I'll make you a deal. Half way through the season, you will change your tune about Broberg.

Maybe if he plays better and earns it that’s fine. Right now he’s not playing as good as Murray and Neimo. Doesn’t mean he’s done as a prospect just that he’s not ready.

I like both Broberg and Niemo and just out of curiosity decided to have a look at some possession numbers..... I think it is saying Niemo hasn't been as good as the eye test may indicate and Broberg hasn't been as bad as some would believe....small sample size and all but it paints a different picture here.

Those numbers mean nothing in preseason. The quality of rosters your going up against swings wildly as does the quality of your team mates.

For example Broberg got to play in the only game featuring our nhl core against Calgary’s C team Niemo did not while Niemo had to play in the game vs Calgary’s nhl team with our nobodies when Broberg did not. Skews the numbers massively in a small sample size.

As long as they are two way, or if Katz is fine with paying them 750k to play in the ahl/callup, I don't really care if they sign them to have options. I will be more disappointed if they are on the opening night roster.

I think they could be on the opening night roster for cap purposes. Whether or not they stick is another thing.

Neither have been great but they would be good call up options. I think Virtanen is starting to look better and has more to give than he’s shown.

We’ll see

Well, it doesn't mean nothing. That would be an overstatement. It means about as much if not more then the average eye test. Just another piece of info to take into account. I think they both have work to do and I see them both on the team at some point in the not too distant future.

Without the extra context I mention it is not particularly useful information.

Here's the piece on Broberg and the other D.

"The organization was planning to give him a spot on the blue line as long as he didn’t falter. After all, this will be his fourth season after he was drafted eighth in 2019.

Through three exhibition games, it feels like Broberg hasn’t quite done enough. He’s looked indecisive and timid at times. His outing Friday at home against Calgary featured a couple of glaring mistakes.

Broberg has a 46.7 expected goals percentage in almost 34 minutes at five-on-five in the preseason, per Natural Stat Trick. Those battling him for a sixth and seventh spot on the defence corps — Ryan Murray, Dmitri Samorukov and Markus Niemelainen — have closed the gap."

For me I still have it as Murray > Broberg > the rest. I think Niemelainen's game makes him seem better than he is because people love the hitting but to me he bleeds chances and isn't as mobile as the other two. Don't think Niems has much more improvement on him while I think Broberg will improve exponentially in the season.

Nothing against Niems but he seems like a career #6/7 to me.

Those two are here only because of the minimum number of vets you have to dress for the Vancouver game. Unless either goes supernova, they get cut the morning after.

I like Nemo but I think his lack of agility (like some have said, he turns like a bus), could be problematic. He has good speed but I think he’s going to get turnstiled more often than not. Not sure if it’s something that will be changing in this stage of his development.

Probably a solid Zadorov / Gudbranson type, maybe not quite on their level (lacking some offence, for one), which is good for a 7D
