Broberg is either a top-6 D or sent down. They know it would be silly to carry him as a 7D at this stage of his development
Yup. Holland has been beating a dead horse about young players being ready and if they aren't then send them down. He said there's no point in having them playing 5 minutes a game at the bottom of the roster and basically forcing them onto the team. Broberg is not ready. Plain and simple. And that's pretty much a fact at this point. Before some of you get all huffy about it no, I'm not saying he's a bad player. He will be the future but as of this present time it's not his time yet.

Niemelainen is more ready than Broberg. Whether he can nab a spot remains to be seen but I have him over Broberg and quite frankly it's not even close.

None of these are super surprising but good information none the less.

In regards to Benson, I think hes probably the #13/14 forward.

McDavid
Draisaitl
Kane
Hyman
RNH
Yamamoto
McLeod
JP
Holloway
Foegele
Janmark
Ryan

Thats basically the top 12 forwards I think the team sees. Hard to really argue.

Shore and Benson are probably the #13/14.

I think on a 23 man roster, theres a chance that he makes this team. But I think this teams going to be running a 20/21 man roster due to the cap. I dont really see Benson cracking a spot, but he is playing well and glad that he is.
That’s the way I see it as well. I have been impressed with Benson I must say. He has gained a step or 2 in his speed. I thought he was trade bait but I think we have something there now. He gets in your face

Here's one (pretty basic) stat that I think gives some pretty decent insight into which players the management and coaches are watching the most heavily in camp:

Simply look at which players are getting the most total ice time and you'll have a pretty good idea which players are most "in the running" for roster jobs (to open the season and shortly thereafter)...

Now it's pretty obvious that they are going to give long looks to Virtanen and Demers as they are PTO's and sure enough... those 2 players are in the top 3 for total ice time in pre-season so far.

Way out on top in total ice time though is Niemelainen... so they obviously want to give him plenty of viewings and no doubt are comparing his readiness to Broberg (7th most ice time and Samorukov 11th most ice time).

Lots of time for Murray as well at the 6th most ice time... to see where he best fits in... as he'll logically either be the #7 dman or the #3LD on most nights.

Virtanen vs Benson... 3rd most time on the ice vs 5th most time on the ice... so there's obviously the battle there as well for an early roster spot.

Holloway getting lots of ice time... 4th most in preseason as he's pretty much a given to be on the roster to start for bonus cap reasons... but I'm sure coaches/management want to see if he's ready to stick beyond that as well.

McLeod at #8 in ice time and JP at #9 in ice time no doubt are roster locks... but exactly where on the roster they best fit at this point is up in the air... anywhere from #1RW-3RW for JP and McLeod likely gets a look on both the 4th line C spot and somewhere on the 3rd line as well (maybe even on the wing).

Derek Ryan getting lots of ice time... 10th most and 12th most is Foegele and I think those 2 are part of the debate over which might be waived due to cap considerations.

Much of this I think is obvious stuff... but I think it's at least a little revealing in looking at the players who are getting less ice time overall... those players are either dead locks for the roster OR are players with no chance at making the roster.

My speculation... Janmark is likely safe and won't even be in consideration for being waived... he's at 17th on the TOI list and they are likely comfortable with what they are getting in the player and no way they are going to risk having him picked off waivers.

Likewise... Malone is 20th in ice time... I thought he might be a contender for a league minimum cap role on that 4th line C spot... but not likely as Benson/Virtanen are the two in the dogfight for the last roster spot looking at the TOI totals.

Some may have been thinking players liked Bourgault had a long shot at a roster spot... but no... the TOI numbers (even before being sent down)... at 24th... pretty clearly showed that he had a one-way path to the AHL likely set in stone even before camp started.

Kesselring at 21st... Kemp at 23rd... same story.. no real shot at anything but an AHL job to start the season.

McKegg (25th) and Griffith (30th) were also possible contenders for a minimum cap spot on the 4th line.. but there as well... you see they were likely never really in contention according to the ice time they got in the pre-season.

I think there's a little insight there that the team sees a bit more in Hamblin over some of the other prospects in the AHL as he's 13th in ice time... although still less than the "true" contenders for roster spots... Virtanen/Holloway/Benson.

Some may say... nothing insightful here that we generally didn't already know... but I think obviously total ice time usage is probably one of the most useful indicators of who management/coaches are most on the fence about in pre-season. Those getting the most ice time are truly vying for roster spots and also the roster players from last season that are highest in icetime are the ones most likely to be waived/moved as well.
Agree with everything typed here. I'd also like to add that often coaching/management has an idea of who to look at just via the practice drills/scrimmage games etc and the players who do better in those will tend to get longer looks for in game action.

Repost from the PGT since I didn't know where else to put it...

Has anyone else noticed the new goal lights at Rogers Place? I somehow missed it until tonight, but we've apparently traded in our classy retro LED beacons for some ugly glowing bricks...

Which is why it was totally the wrong move to let broberg stay in sweden for two more years, where he got low minutes and did not play in all situations. Broberg was drafted by Hamilton in the ohl and would have been far better off playing gobs of minutes in all situations on a junior team.

Broberg will go down but will be back up quick if one of our dmen gets hurt. He'll be an NHL Dmn but I do not see a really good long term dman in him.

I was worried about Broberg after watching the prospects in Penticton. He should have been an absolute star there and just didn't stand out enough. How has Samorukov looked? Haven't heard much on him.

What's the story with Bourgault... is he still in camp? Will he get another game (this time with some talent) or have we already decided he needs a year to marinate?

Does anyone know how many players are actually still at camp?

From the fishing pic it looked like 29 but i'm sure there are some injuries and such.

Just watched some of the highlights. Appears that Samorukov started the rush on 2 of the goals last night and wasn't on the ice for any against. Can't ask for much more then that from a young stay at home dman.

Samourkov has been good in his last two games. Few gaffs and solid if unspectacular. He has been mostly invisible in the way that is good for defensemen.

Right at this moment for me Niem > Murray > Samourukov > Demers > Broberg

For the record tho, besides Niem, there just hasn't been a standout defenseman for those last couple spots. The difference between even Niem and Broberg really isn't "that" much. We have used Broberg at the Nhl level and he wasn't an extreme liability and he has shown the worst of the bunch rather obviously IMO so far overall.

Niem played well in the NHL last year IMO and has been the best defenseman in preseason to date. He would be who I would start the season out with to give the team the best chance to win. But whether its Niem or Murray or Broberg... etc... It is our #6/7 spots we are talking about. If you need to take a risk on a spot for a player that is the place to do it.

Sounds like they may "have" to have Broberg on the roster to start the season. Maybe it just makes sense that you play him a game and see how he does in an actual game after all the practice of preseason. Maybe he takes the ball and run with it. If that is the case I fully expect he will be on a short leash. Maybe one and done for the year if he does not perform well.

Any lineup notes tonight? Mainly AHL guys in Abbotsford? Oilers always seem slow releasing the lineup.

I agree that Niemelainan has had the best camp of the rookie defensemen. And that he likely slots best as a bottom pair d on a largely finesse based NHL d-corp. Love the player! I'd parse out Murray and Demers in the competition. Murray's a sure thing 7th defender and insurance package. Demers maybe farms out as a quality pro's pro who can support and mentor the Bakersfield kids (if he is offered a two way deal and wants to stay in the organization).

We know Broberg will be on the NHL roster to maximize Oilers cap flexibility. The coach has a long read on Broberg so projecting that he might only get a "one and done" scenario defies reality of how the coach and management view this player.

A summary of Broberg's first NHL recall, early in his North American pro time, and as age 20 defender, shows a pretty solid debut notable is four games in a huge away game at rival Vegas. @Fourier debunked some of the +/- criticism showing highlights of his December 7th -2 game against the Wild have no bearing on the goals against.

Broberg is 3 years younger than Niemelainan, 2 years younger than Samaroukov, even 1 year younger than Kesselring. I anticipate Niemelainan and Broberg to play a lot of NHL games this year with waiver protection and the different elements and differing ceilings they offer this organization. Unfortunately I fear Samaroukov may get snagged in waivers.

Onboarding as an NHL defenseman is damn hard. Trying to do it on a team priming for its winning window makes it even harder. Broberg needs to continue to get physically stronger, sharpen his decision making speed (which comes through experience - Bouchard is a good example of that growth).

This team finally has quality young defensemen ready to contribute.

Your ranking made me curious so I decided to run the scoring chance numbers for each defenceman this pre-season. Hard to fully judge with the variance in rosters but...

Broberg 3 games 10-9
Demers 3 games 10-25
Murray 3 games 13-16
Niemelainen 4 games 12-32
Samorukov 4 games 17-13

Demers, Niemelainen, Murray and Samo were in that Calgary game where they were dominated.

My opinion is Demers is not even close to NHL quality anymore and Niems probably isn't ready either but quality of roster maybe played into both. Samo surprisingly looks quality from this surviving that Calgary game quite well. Broberg hard to say with the easier teams but solid enough. Murray we know is probably a solid bottom pair or #7.
