Matthews has $52 mil in career earnings already. His next contract is for $53 mil. If he took a contract for $10 mil per, and only made $40 mil, his career earnings would be at $92 mil with another contract to go.... I wonder how much that 10% loss in earnings would really affect his future lifestyle?
Imagine a world, where Matthews, Nylander and Marner all agreed to sign for $10 mil, and what this team could do with an $6-7 mil in cap room. I understand why they don't, but then also don't necessarily understand the greed completely trumping the desire to win... if there is one.
