We'll have plenty of time in 5-7 years to pick a million times and hope we find good players. Now's the time to find a way to win a stanley cup and you need to get aggressive to do that. What about our goalies' performance this season tells you Leafs are contenders?
What about Matthews, Marner and Nylander not being able to do much when time and space is taken away from then and they keep playing perimeter hockey tells you Leafs are contenders?
On top of that you have Tavares at 11 AAV still on the cap; a significantly declining asset.

It will come as a big surprise to many people that toughness isn't evidenced by the willingness to fight to shove a guy after a whistle. Being able to do that stuff is basic table stakes, but teams win because their star players play better than other teams star players. Just look at any recent Cup champion and that is the "formula":
