You are not even making sense. Ovi had what support besides Backstrom in his earlier years? Did he also have teammates taking the team all the way to the bank and doing nothing in the playoffs and also shirk from taking responsibility for getting shutdown?

We are going to have to agree to disagree. Spending on this team the way it is now is problematic IMO. Leafs really shouldn't be spending draft capital on rentals until Tavares is off the cap and Matthews, Marner and Nylander show they can play and produce when time and space is taken away from them.

Tampa got swept by Columbus because Columbus players played harder. Outworked tampa every game, period, shift.

Florida did the same to Boston, they took it straight to Boston and didn’t wilt when the time came, down 2-1 in game 7 in TD garden and they not only tie the game but win in OT? Leafs would end that game losing 5-1 after empty netters because our guys just can’t do what others big guys can. They used a relentless forecheck and an incredibly physical style to pressure teams to make mistakes and capitalized

They didn’t just “let weird shit happen”, they made weird shit happen with their play

Our guys don’t have the drive, effort, and frankly the “playoff talent” required to do what other stars in the league have to make that stuff happen

Standing pat is a good decision, the team isn’t good enough and gutting it further won’t help anyways since the core will not show up either way

Nylander --> 11.5M with NMC. Not many teams will want him at that deal and then he can block moves

Tavares --> 11M with NMC final year. He is 7M overpaid and a cap dump of epic proportions. No one will touch

Marner --> 11M final year with NMC. Again his value is reduced by his contract status, along with his ability to stop a trade and ride to UFA if he wants

Matthews --> 13.25M x 4 + NMC. Similar to marner except he has more value due to term despite being overpaid. Leafs wont deal him likely due to his generational goal scoring abilities in the regular season

Rielly --> 7.5M x 6 + NMC . Might be only realistic option. Try and see if rielly will waive the NMC, has a good deal and producing well this year.

The time to retool was 2023 NHL draft

Nylander or Marner should have been dealt at the draft for top 15 pick + B+ prospect +decent young roster player, and then we could be aggresive in trading for a core piece or signing via UFA. That chance is lost now
