Yeah, it's going to be tough for any FA winger to come through. Robertson isn't even playing regularly, Steeves hasn't even gotten a sniff despite multiple strong AHL seasons, McMann had to practically force his way onto the team, etc. And there's still guys like Tverberg, Abruzzese etc lurking in the background. I imagine Bert won't be brought back which could create an opportunity but I'm sure there are other NHL wingers Treliving will go after.
..and then add in Cowan as well....

What's the template next year?

Knies-Matthews-Domi
McMann-JT-Marner
Cowan-X-88 (Wennberg or Monahan would be good there)
Dewar-X-X

I'd like Trenin as an addition to the 4th line RW

I don't know about Holmberg as a 4C - I think the 4C needs to be a very good PK guy.

Rielly-X (Roy?)
Benoit-McCabe
X-X/Liljegren
X

If Laggesson would come back, I would like him at 7D, not sure if Liljegren comes back, his post-season is going to determine this I think

Woll and X - I've stated I like Stolarz as a target this off-season

Big shopping list is 3C, top 4 RD and someone to help solidify goaltending.

Trade bait;

Robertson
Holmberg
Liljegren
Reaves
Kampf
Timmins
Jarnkrok (short of a great post-season)

Of the UFA'S I'd definitely keep Domi, I think Bert is going to price himself out and the rest of the guys are pretty meh

I'd keep Robertson, he's going to be cheap and he's good depth scoring but I'd want to see what Liljegren wants before I'd commit to him mid to long term

I'd like to trade for somebody young to fill the 3C role, we can protect and develop somebody to take over Tavares role as he transitions to 3C
I'd be willing to trade any pick and/or prospect not named Cowan or Grebyonkin to get that done, I'd listen on Liljegren and Holmberg to get that done as well

Then I'm throwing money at Roy and trying to find one more guy, Ringing on Fabbro, talking to Carrier in UFA that type of thing

Addressing the C depth should be a big focus, especially if this organization does not plan on giving Nylander a real look at the position. Would love to add Chandler Stephenson or Nicolas Roy in the summer, though Stephenson will probably command too much and get overpaid.

Keep an eye on Arizona if the move to Utah.
Some players may not want to go.
Jake McBain not saying he wouldn't want to go but he would be a good target to trade for.

Joshua Dakota UFA C would be a good target

I wish the Leafs had signed and kept Joshua when he had his rights. He took a long time to be the player he is today but he's a pretty solid 4th liner now. He'd be a good target but I suspect he'll be a little expensive for what he provides.

I was thinking of the Arizona thing today. In 32 thoughts sounds like a lot of players are pissed. I wouldn't be shocked if a few of them asked for trades. Couple that with the report from Mirtle where ownership wants changes if the leafs do nothing in the playoffs. You could maybe connect the dots on a Marner for Keller type deal. Or maybe some of their younger guys? Not sure but interesting to think about.

McBain / Robertson is a decent basis for a trade, he's bigger, faster and plays the more premium position but Robertson has the offensive upside over him, I would need a small plus I think.

How do those dots connect?

If Vincent Desharnais makes it to UFA I have no doubt Treliving checks in.

He asked for him invthe Lafferty deal but Edmonton refused.

He would be a good 3RHD fit for us.

Roy would be a better target but McBain would fit in better financially and cost less to acquire.

Bertuzzi - Matthews - Domi
McMann - Tavares - Marner
Knies - McBain - Nylander
Dewar - Holmberg - Reaves

good luck getting Mitch to waive his NMC to go live amongst Mormons lol

Then he's probably moved.

I think if you actually get to the point of asking him, then there's likely no way back.
Not sure I understand how is there no way back? He says 'no' and if not re-signed goes as a UFA.
He's not going to go to Winnipeg or Utah just because he's asked.

He has a full NMC....
I'm never sure who knows this or not.

He has a full NMC....
Yes, he does.

But I always interact with these scenarios with the idea in mind that the Leafs have yet again been bounced from the playoffs in a rather untimely way.

And there's a good reason to think that there should've been something done already; if it happens again in a few weeks' time, then something has to change, right? So NMC be damned.

As mentioned above, if the change is necessary (it may be already), then nothing should be off the board irrespective of who's feelings it may hurt. My guess is that even being asked is likely an indication that the team does not want him, and in most cases, the player leaves.

This would apply to Tavares as well.

Utah, Houston, Arizona, where ever

I just threw Winnipeg in as a joke/thinly veiled threat.

And then you woke up from your dream and learned about how contracts work.

"Im going to send you to winnipeg!"

"Nope"

"Well.... I'll trade you to Utah!"

"Nah"

"Can i trade you to...."

"No."

Wonder if you understand yet what is happening or if you need to do the slightest, most minuscule amount of research.

"But but but look at all the NMC that have been traded before!"

"Nah, thanks though" - Still Marner.

Feelings have nothing to do with it, threats are meaningless and wouldn't even be considered.

Agreed. The time for trading Nylander + Marner was this summer.

I know how they work, and I'd rather you not refer to that in such a condescending way, thanks.

I get if you or others are too emotionally attached to Marner to play the thought experiment, but if the team changes are needed—and again, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that's already the case—then how do you make meaningful changes, both in terms of team chemistry and assets?

You mention 'condescending' and that add that nonsense.
The only meaningful change they can make is the coach, they need to wait a year for anything else.
