Bertuzzi has bad wrists and ankles. I'd be wary of signing him to any long term deal.

I wanted absolutely nothing to do with Domi but he's been a pleasant surprise.I like him but the term with him is a bit scary...I've liked Domi quite a bit, not a perfect player but adds speed, toughness and good playmaking, he has a decent shot he doesn't use nearly enough.
Defense is probably more of a priority especially given our prospect pool is pretty strong on wing.
If he decides to pull a Sundin then you tell him to take a hike after next season regardless.Tavares isn't going anywhere.

I've accepted he'll never be strong defensively, only the PIMs remain a concern.
LTIR will take care of that.Bertuzzi has bad wrists and ankles. I'd be wary of signing him to any long term deal.
That would be foolish... if the guy wants to extend at $4mil or so... you aren't going to find a better C at that price.... It depends on the price though. If he decides to pull a Sundin then you tell him to take a hike after next season regardless.
He'll be a UFA after next season but I would doubt very much there would be any bad feelings. They will offer him a sizable pay cut to stay and he'll make a decision. If he decides to pull a Sundin then you tell him to take a hike after next season regardless.
Knies is also a concern.I believe he's had 5 fighting majors
97 PIM
25 in fighting majors...I don't know if he got any instigators but a little higher but we get penalized more than we should be, I swear.
Maybe or he plays through it.LTIR will take care of that.
Or Tre could see him for what he is and move on to a cheaper option. The country club tour for vets has gotten tiring (Spezza, Gio, Thornton...).They will offer him a sizable pay cut to stay and he'll make a decision.

Fletcher completely botched things with Sundin, not sure why we'd hope for that to occur with Tavares.

I don't recall the major but when you break it down you're right it doesn't seem so bad.I think Knies has 1 major, so 38 PIM in 76 games?
Taking 19 penalties in 76 games isn't so bad, a minor every 4 games?

Feels like it's more than every 4 games though.
At the cost of someone younger/skilled vs having to shoe horn Spezza/Gio/Thornton/Simmonds because of seniority/loyalty.Spezza and Gio have provided tremendous value for this team, given their contracts. To dislike that is silly.
Oh.. .please do tell who was younger more skilled, and would have provided more than Spezza or Gio did... that were somehow kept out of the lineup.... ??At the cost of someone younger/skilled vs having to shoe horn Spezza/Gio/Thornton/Simmonds because of seniority/loyalty.
Assuming Tavares will sign anything less then 6m (still wouldn't) is wishful dreaming. Not to mention the permanent spots throughout the lineup (PP1/2C) because hes the captain/core four salary..etc. Rather spend that money elsewhere throughout the lineup and continuing to build around the real future Matthews/Marner/Nylander.

I guess we'll see what Tavares signs for... and he will resign here... and I do think it will be very team friendly. Assuming he won't resign here, is wishful dreaming.
I'd probably go the Tampa Bay / Stamkos route, it's either going to be a deal that makes sense or you move on because you're trying to be competitive, they'd have all the reason in the world to be sentimental, longer history and 2 cups.
The next Stamkos deal will be a good template for Tavares. Stamkos is actually putting up more points, but is significantly worse 5v5. I think Stamkos is going to be around $4 mil as well.
His play, as the shut down C, the last few games has been pretty good. If the cap continues to move up, and we can sign him for $4.x then we should be able to get a 2C at $6-8.... we shall see though.Stamkos has moved to wing as well, a less premium position.
I'm really curious if we got some better centre depth if JT could produce more offensively with less responsibility in playing centre, he could probably still take draws as that skill hasn't really deteriorated.

Leafs will have all the leverage. I’m sure they will be fair but he’ll have no choice but to accept their offer, assuming he has no interest in leavingWe shall see.
He's going to be in the twilight of his career, I wonder if he really takes a hair cut, 900k-1.5M range? At some point, money doesn't buy the immortality of a cup.
It’ll be tough but if there is anyway to keep both Domi and Bertuzzi, I would do that. They’ve worked really well with Matthews and it allows Marner to play on another line. I always found we play our best team hockey when Matthews and Marner are separated and when the opposing team has 3 lines to worry about. With the chemistry that Matthews and Domi have shown and the fact that this off season ought to focus on upgrading the D-core / goaltending, would you be in favour of offering Max Domi 4×4 million and running something like this in 2024 in terms of top 10 forwards.
Jarnkrok-Matthews-Domi
McMann-Tavares- Marner
Knies-Holmberg-Nylander
Robertson or Cowan
Or are you in the camp that thinks the Leafs ought to add another forward to this top 9 + 2 group?
Edited your post for accuracy. ;-)It’ll be tough but if there is anyway to keep both Domi and Bertuzzi, I would do that. I would love to find a way to upgrade on Holmberg at the 3C. Hayton or McBain would be my target using Robertson and Holmberg as trade chips to swap with UTAH.
Bertuzzi - Matthews - Domi
McMann - Tavares - Marner
Knies - McBain - Nylander
Great blend of skill, size and physicality in that top nine.
