maybe?
I just don’t see how they could do that and afford the core.

my guess. Total and complete guess is that

1.) they are thinking they can’t afford rielly. If he isn’t going to be our PP d man then we can’t pay him 7.5

2.) rielly may sign in Philly.

To me it would have to be a D right? Like we can’t spend tons on 5 forwards and expect to extend rielly.

Again complete guess
You couldn’t afford it with the core as is.
In fact you can afford very little with the core as is and lack of success has made that even worse.
You should still be moving out 11 million dollars. You would bring in Larkin at 6, re-sign Rielly, pay for a quality 3rd line C and remake the entire 3rd line to have a viable top 9.

Evander Kane seems to be a great player to target. He adds that physicality and may just be a PF that can go pound for pound against the likes of Josh Anderson, Tom Wilson and co.

He's the type of player this team desperately lacks in the top six.

I wonder what it takes to get him and if Sharks will consider letting him go. He had character issues for sure but I think the recent struggles off the ice has humbled him.

Doughty would have been a great add if his contract was better. The right kind of personality on the backend with winning pedigree.

Doughty would call our everyone on this team including the coach. Would be the most perfect scenario
Unless he's getting bought off, I just don't see it

Exactly the personality and skills set we need

We also have a lot of character issue. We don't have any

I am so sick and tired with blantness, nobody giving a shit. Other day, Mackinnon got pissed at himself, 9 years and I have won nothing
We have too many vanilly consultant types of players.

I would love a Kane. If he's getting bought off or contract terminated, Leafs should be all over him

Guy who has seemed to struggle at times off ice, but exactly what we need on the ice I agree. I wouldn't touch him at his 7mil contract though tbh

Just to be clear. You think mackinnon being pissed about not winning anything in 9 years is relevant to winning?

I mean if it was...... wouldn’t he have won?

The fact that Mackinnon increased his PPG production from 1.35 in the regular season to 1.50 in the playoffs and showing frustration at losing (implying he cares) is a little more comforting than a nonchalant or defiant attitude.

He gave the effort, came up short and mirrored the frustration of his fanbase. That's legit.

And their media still call him a choker

If you let Hyman go to market, you should be able to comfortably add a ~$7M player.... sign Hall.

Hall has a house in Etobicoke I believe. He probably can be had much cheaper than 7m and he would add extra scoring that I do not believe we have enough of (although many believe we do yet we could not score in the past 2 playoffs when goals were hard to come by).

If Doughty hadn't shown decline and his contract, I wouldn't mind him.

Exactly. I forget the exact stat, but we've been 2nd last in scoring in the last 3 playoffs. That's why you add more elite talent, not add grinders because 'you have enough scoring'. It's clear our depth was good enough, but when MM and AM can't score...the drop off was pretty stark.

Columbus and Montreal both chose to play a stifling defense and wait for mistakes/bounces and it seems like Kyle and Sheldon learned all the wrong lessons.

If we don't have enough scoring, maybe using half the cap on 4 offensive forwards didn't work.

We need a mix of both. As it stands we do not have enough of both but we have the upper hand on skill. Our bottom six pretty much gives us neither and there in lies part of the problem. M & M not pulling their weight is another. Our goalies also give up goals that should not go in and our coach needs to be better. Oh yeah, and our PP sucks.

It definitely hasn't worked so far, and likely won't work (especially when 34 and 16 don't take discounts). I'm just bitter they completely botched the deadline when elite talent could have been had for incredibly cheap, and they chose to go with more 'character'.

I don't know if Kyle has the balls to trade Mitch tbh.

No that can’t be it.

Well JT was out this year but I have always stood by the fact that if you shut down Matty, you can beat the Leafs. Other than an ENer by 15, we got no goals from 15,65,47,16,97,20,12 and 24. Willie (5), Matty (1), Hyman (1) and Spezza (3) were our only forwards to score.

Where are we going to cheap out if we sign Hall? That would leave like 4 million bucks to build an entire new 3rd line.

Wanna talk about a contract / player you’ll regret in 1? Season. That’s drew doughty.
Always liked doughty but at 31 and quite a few tough miles under him, six more yrs could get ugly. Maybe he ages well but to me he already looks like he is a little worn out. And, didn't he already say he didn't want to play in Toronto?

Oh yeah there is the problem of the cap again. This time you can't send picks for teams to take on salary. Said signing Hamilton and trading Rielly is a potential way to get better and acquire assets. We could do the same for Hall and trade 88 or 16 or 44 or a combination of the three. Doubt Dubas has the onions though.

A healthy Foligno is better than Hall, but that's only part of why they paid more.

With such limited cap space, they had to pay a second team to retain 1.3 million dollars. With Hall, they would have had to pay a team to retain 2 million.

Toronto would have had to create an extra 700,00 in cap space to bring in Hall, which would have almost certainly meant losing a player. 700k at the deadline is a big amount.

Hall also limited his possible destinations, which may or may not have even included Toronto.

I don't disagree with you but if we feel the need to go out and get more offense because we can't score in the playoffs then why the hell are we paying 4 offensive guys half the cap? Maybe just maybe the philosophy of management is not the correct formula. What happens if we land Hall and still cant get past the 1st round?

Why does Hall have a place in Etoobicoke and why do you know this
