Ya, its the signing bonuses that I'd think that teams with self imposed caps, financial constraints and with little or no revenue over the last 2 years (due to COVID) would struggle with I think. There's a $7.25 m signing bonus for the following 3 years after the $9.6 m gets paid this off season.
1st season will only cost 750g though.

Can someone let me know if Brandon Saad is someone the leafs should look into? I read somewhere that there might be attitude problems, don't know if that's true?
Also would Jaden Schwartz be a good pickup?

Schwartz would be a great pickup. Plays a similar role to what Palat does in Tampa. Doesn't get the attention, but a very dependable/responsible player. He would be a great signing.

Very basic player. Doesn't really stray from his role - just goes up and down the wing, does his job efficiently. Good scorer if somebody gets him the puck.

Also would Jaden Schwartz be a good pickup?

Ridiculous shot... plays aggressive. But he's often hurt. It would be a gamble, but if he's healthy, he's the best UFA winger out there.

Yes for sure Saad is someone the Leafs should target. Consistent player. Zero attitude problems.

Schwarts is alright, good shot but past first tendency. Good 2-way game but health is questionable, Saad would be the better add for the Leafs.

Soup is good for a 4th liner who PK.
Engvall might turn into William Karlsson 2.0 or just be okay.

I don't think Engvall is that remarkable either way, but I find that game to game you'll get the up tempo forechecker who can rag the puck around or you get a guy who seems to be trying to make skill plays where he has no business doing so. Goes back to the coaching. Are they giving him inconsistent marching orders?

There's been some talk of the future of Pavel Zacha in NJD. Speculation he could be used in a trade this off-season, as the Devils seem set to go with Nico, Hughes and McLeod down the middle moving forward. The assumption being trading him to help improve their defense.

I do wonder if a Travis Dermott + prospect or Timothy Liljegren for Pavel Zacha trade might work. Zacha had a rough first couple years, but his last two seasons have been really solid.

He'd be an ideal 3C for us moving forward. He's over 50% at even strength on the draw, 18 of his 20 even strength points were primary points. He is also very productive on the powerplay. He isn't overly physical, but was still 3rd on the Devils forwards in hits. He also plays on the PK regularly.

I could imagine he, and a free agent like Coleman/Goodrow, and then maybe someone like Joey Anderson being a real tough line to play against just because they can do a bit of everything. Chip in some offense, and some physicality, and be a momentum gaining type line.

Engvall is a fine 4th liner tbh. It's possible he develops some finish and can be a good third liner. That is essentially both he and Mikheyev's issue. They lack finish. They are awesome defensively. They battle hard. But.... they just don't generate anything.

Issue is, if we can find someone, internally or externally, who can bring similar traits to Engvall at 750K, or even 900K, and there's a team willing to give us a pick for Engvall, even if it's a 4th or 5th, and we can create some extra cap wiggle room.... do we think the odds of Engvall finding finish are worth saying no to that?

For example,

Is a Mikheyev - Spezza - Engvall fourth line worth more than a Mikheyev - Spezza - Anderson fourth line with whatever pick we can get for Engvall?

Would love Zacha here as a bonafide 3rd line C.

I wouldn't say an ideal 3C, since he's probably still below average defensively, but he is the kind of player we need. He drives the net and plays well in traffic.

If we could get him for a decent price, I actually would still try to sign a 3c and use Zacha on LW in the top-6.

He's got another year at 1mill in STL. He might not have huge value in a trade, but I think he would be a great asset for the Leafs 4th line. He's still a good skater and is physical.

He was pretty useless here and we can do a lot better than him.

If we wanted another Clifford, we should just bring back Simmonds for 1 mill. He had a similar contribution but at least had some flashes of being useful on a PP (at one point) as well.

Ideally, we get better players than both.

Cliffy > Simmonds but you are right, we can get better players than both. Dubas just can't chose a Simmonds over a Perry or sign a Vesey, Boyd, Barabanov or old run down Jumbos.

Took him two tries to fix the D and the backup goalie. Second attemp at fixing our bottom 6 better be a charm.

I like the idea of Brett Ritchie for the fourth line. He looked good in his time with the Flames. Two teams in the final four have those types of players. Reaves for Vegas and Martin for the Islanders. Bolts have a lot of rough guys by committee, or big slow and tough like Maroon...guys that play that style still clearly are a factor in the league. I think Brett Ritchie would be a good add

I’m kind of leaning towards adding Andrew Cogliano as a depth veteran. He plays a really fast and aggressive checking game. Not intimidating, but always in the fray. Good PKer too.

You actually think Mikaheyev is a better player than Engvall ?

I mean Engvall set up 2 goals one was winning and was tieing

He has some scoring upside considering he has never played with top 2 lines

Mikaheveyv has been opportunity to play on PP this year, played with Tavares and he still can't do Jack and makes 1.65

I still don't get the love around this guy

I'd like both Cogliano and Schwartz, but this place will lose their mind at two sub 6' wingers

Leafs do have a great medical team. I think we should be the ones to take advantage of that and gamble on schwartz. In fact that should be the main selling point and how they've helped guys like ennis to get his career back on track from a health perspective. Jmo.

Mikheyev to Edmonton for Josh Archibald… do it Dubas!
