Rielly and Holl out. DeAngelo and Oleksiak in. Assuming this board is not on the cancel culture train, if TD convinces the club he isn't a loose cannon, his offense balances out the loss of Rielly and we have a new look D plus some assets. I think Rielly + Holl costs more than DeAngelo plus Oleksiak in a couple of years as Holl ain't resining for $2M. I am not as worried as some about DeAngelo's issues with his NY team mates. Getting in a physical altercation with another player is a bell you can't un-ring but a new club is a reset right? Is Kyle the GM who can straighten him out? Is Keefe a coach who can?

I usually hate hyperbole, but my first thought was sure why don't we also go after that Kings D I won't name who elbowed his girlfriend down a flight of stairs while we are at it?

Sorry - no place for advocacy for a guy who's made a name for himself practicing prejudice while punching teammates out for nothing. It's not just a fight with a teammate, and we should stand for more than that here, no matter how good or bad we are.

Horrible, horrible suggestion.

I would sooner sign that other guy than DeAngelo. Don't think either is a good choice though.

Our defence was a strength. Sounds like Rielly will sign at a good number. I don’t envision much change tbh. It’s possible all 7 are back. Though I think Dermott will be traded, so Sandin can have a full-time role, and maybe if Bogosian asks for too much, we find someone else to fill that spot. (Though perhaps Liljegren is part of the 6 - however, I don’t see that as the plan. He’ll be the spare RD from the AHL). I think Hutton will be back on a league min deal as a 7th D.

I think people thinking Rielly, Muzzin, Holl will all be gone are of course a bit of what will likely happen. It’s certainly possible Rielly and Holl are gone under certain circumstances (Holl in expansion if we acquire another forward worth protecting - Rielly if extension talks go south) but largely, I think that won’t be the case.

we just had one season where our entire group of 6 D playing weren’t issues. Lets not now subtract from that

Here's a line-up where we keep the core and add some hard-nosed players and potential breakout players.

I'm too lazy to do the trades and cap stuff. I'm pretty sure this will fit under the cap if 1) Kardi is retained 2) Foligno is willing to take a cheap deal.

Also, Bogosian and Lilly can rotate the 4th and 6th spots. Bogosian was super steady as #6. Why can't he play #4 for part of the year? If this plan fails, an upgrade can be made at the deadline. Sandin starts as 7, but will definitely play most of the year due to inevitable injuries. Konecny and Kadri are the summer's big acquisitions.

Konecny Matthews Nylander
Foligno Tavares Marner
Bunting Kadri Mikheyev
Katchook Semyonov Spezza
____________
Brooks/Robertson

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Bogosian
Dermott Lilly
________
Sandin

Campbell
H. Ludqvist (he wants to return)

I think the Leafs should sign a LD version of Bogosian (which I guess could be Hutton but I'd aim higher) and effectively let Sandin - Bogosian vs. Hutton - Liljegren fight it out to be the bottom pairing next year. The loser between Bogosian/Hutton is the #7 and should still get a fair amount of playing time with injuries and such, while the loser of Sandin/Liljegren is in the AHL as the primary call up for their side of the ice.

If Bogosian wants to go elsewhere, he can. He's not irreplaceable. Trade Dermott or Holl and let the other be Muzzin's partner in the top 4 next year.

A 5-8 group with Sandin, UFA, Bogosian/UFA, and Liljegren is fairly deep, and I have the Leafs signing a guy like Tucker Poolman to be the #9 as well.

I thought Holl faded in 2nd half and once again without Muzzin, didn't look like much, I would like to upgrade the RD in the top 4 but realistically, the $$ needed elsewhere in the line up makes it low on the list of priorities.

I was looking at Martinez as well but not sure this season is repeatable as a Leaf., basically achieving a career year at age 33. Vegas system has the forwards supporting the defensemen a lot and reduces high danger chances. Nate Schmidt and Colin Miller looked a lot more effective in LV than they have away. Granted Buffalo and Van were the anti-Vegas this year but the Leafs forwards do not play the Vegas style 200' game either. Too much of a risk they get the Martinez from the last couple of years in LA I think.

LA had no offensive and they had Doughty running the pp.
Vegas had lots of offensive players like us.
I think 9 ppg's

I don’t think we have the cap space to bring back Bogosian without moving Holl.

We have much bigger needs on forward, and limited cap space.

How much do you think Bogo will get? He only got $1mil after playing on the first pairing with Hedman in a cup win.

Mirtle also in his article today said Rielly is willing to give a discount per multiple sources. I have had my issues with Morgan but at say 6.5, you keep him.

It would be very digestible if we had less expensive forwards.

JT/Marner contracts really hampering us.

Do they really need a high end offensive d-man with all the weapons they have or could that money be spent in a better way?

The article also presents the Pacioretty trade as an example of expected return.

Mid 1st + 2nd + NHLer.

Could they get Philip Broberg + pick + Kelfbom for an extended Rielly?

I actually think the best comparable for Rielly is Roman Josi from 3-4 years ago. So maybe you do re-sign him if you think he has another level like Josi.

Y'all already know how hard we should be targeting cizikas no? He a free agent summatime sire. If he is to be gotten almost for free, that sucka must be a target no? He a real pk killa, still scoring, what! Hitting that thang. Peep game my peeps.

Josi a better pp sucka than the fool rielly is milord. Josi got game on the pp like a mutha sucka. Rielly a dork on the pp. A real fool. Josi also a captain material, as rielly is not that much sire. Rielly a worse player in almost every sector. Josi a leader who decides gezames. I don't like the comparision there. Only contract wise if you is doing that thang, and I don't even know what type of a contract josi has there milord.

Their PP production is pretty similar.

I doubt he gets more than 1.5 on another team even if he chases the money. I really like him, but he is what he is - a bottom pairing guy. And I'd imagine most teams under stand that

He probably ends up with a deal in the range of 1.2ish mil. I'd be fine with that on the Leafs

I like Cizikas as a depth player, but given his reputation, he'll be way too expensive for the Leafs. They're already struggling with depth players like Mik/Engvall at their cap hits. There's no room to add bottom-six players at double the price.
