You think the leafs would do that trade?

And do you think Ron Francis would essentially force retirement on Jason Spezza?

Yes, I think the Leafs would definitely make that trade. Jason Spezza on a league minimum contract is very valuable to them.

How do they replace Spezza otherwise? Likely costs 3 million to bring in an equal replacement.

There's not point arguing. We'll see what happens.

I'd say the fact the Leafs put him on waivers this season suggests they are reasonably confident that other teams won't touch him.

It's not like those contracts haven't been signed in the past. Guys like Hutch specifically got a contract because of expansion.

Anyway, we'll talk about this when the draft actually happens.

I'm assuming that Ron Francis isn't a moron and the leafs can sign more defencemen if they want. You're assuming the opposite.

I just think we should protect who we want to keep most and expose the rest. Playing games is too risky.

Trade Kerfoot, sign and extra D, think we are so smart…. Who’s the next best option? Joey Anderson, Adam Brooks, and Jason Spezza all look a lot bette then Pierre Engvall.

Dubas was reasonably confident in a lot of things last year.

I actually don’t think they’ll take Spezza, but that’s what I would do.

I’m more worried they skip the players we hope they take and scoop up Adam Brooks. I think it’s more important to protect Brooks and Anderson than Holl and Dermott, so 7-3-1 with Kerfoot, Engvall, Holl, Dermott and Hutchinson exposed.

Joey Anderson, Adam Brooks, and Jason Spezza and Pierre Engvall.

All of them are 4th liners and replaceable.

But one of them has the respect around the league to be left alone.

If the Leafs put Jason Spezza on waivers, would he get picked up?

Forget Spezza. I already said Francis likely doesn’t select him out of respect.

There’s no reason to play games with this draft. We have a good set up right now. The obvious pick is Kerfoot, and that clears cap space for us. Trade him away, and I’m not sure Brooks isn’t the guy who goes.

A team in cap trouble needs guys like Anderson and Brooks to contribute for league minimum.

You can also clear cap space after the draft with trades.

By the way, Holl also clears cap space.

Flat cap again is going to make salary really hard to move.

Seattle could exasperated that situation by actively avoiding contracts in the draft and then acquiring then via trade for compensation.

By the way, Holl also clears cap space.

Why would they take Holl? There are a lot of really good defensemen likely to be available.

Holl also clears half as much space, and I think we need him for help Sandin while Muzzin helps Liljegren.

I'm tired.

Fiat cap is an issue this off-season, but there’s also 80 million dollars worth of jobs to fill.
That’ll change the dynamics compared to last year.
And Seattle can still overload with valuable defencemen to trade, rather than filling holes. In essence, pick the BPA or BVA.
Does Seattle have to spend x amount at the draft?

Holl won't help Sandin. Holl is way too inconsistent without Muzzin and he looks like Marincin at times without him. If they think Liljegren is ready then you replace Holl with Liljegren to play alongside Muzzin before he starts to really decline. Kerfoot and Dermott probably get you more in a trade so leaving them unprotected and losing one of them wouldn't be very good asset management.

I don’t like Holl either, but he can play 3rd pairing minutes with Sandin. If Bogosian resigns for cheap, then we can unload Holl, but I’m not sure we get much back.

I don’t see any scenario where Seattle takes Holl. There are just so many better defensemen that will be available.

If we trade Kerfoot, they probably take Brooks.

Losing Brooks would be almost as devastating as losing Leipsic.

Would there be any opportunity with the Leafs trading for a guy like Boris Katchouk? Played in the Soo and could be a prospect for prospect swap. He could play in the bottom 6 immediately as well.

I think Tampa will want to keep their cheap talent for next season. Who knows how many roster players they'll lose.

I would prefer the leafs go after Ho Sang.

I've wanted us to get Ho Sang and give him a chance here for a few years now. Doubt it'll ever happen though.

You listed what I'd be okay with as a 4th line. Brooks-Spezza-Anderson. Young legs on either side of Spezza to get the youthful juices flowing. A guy who can coach them both up on the bench, and do a lot of talking on ice. Think it'd be a line that brings a lot of energy. I've been impressed with the play of Brooks, and he was one of very few Leafs to initiate a scrum in that Habs series. Anderson plays a hard forechecking game. I think this line could be good and super cheap. Include Robertson on the 3rd line and the fact our starter next year makes 1.65m, it leave us with some extra spending money.

He's a UFA. I think there's a high chance that Dubas and co will pitch him a good plan to get him into the NHL.

Imagine the tears if Ho Sang - Tavares tear it up for the leafs.
