- Trade Kerfoot and Dermott prior to expansion. This would likely ensure that Engvall would be the person traded

If you trade guys away, you have to expose somebody else.

As of right now, we expose Kerfoot, Engvall, Holl, and Hutchinson to meet the requirements. Trade one away and they need to be replaced. We could use Spezza, but that’s a gamble….I know I would take him if I’m Seattle.

Guys like Anderson and Brooks get exposed, but don’t count for the minimum.

Unless we sign Dermott, he is exposed and doesn’t count for the exposure requirements.

Protecting Spezza and Holl over Kerfoot seems kind of dumb, don't you think?

I figure Spezza has already put the same note/threat about retirement if picked that he did on waivers.

If Seattle takes him then he retires and they lose out on a potential asset instead.

Why waste the opportunity to get an actual asset instead? It would have made more sense as a waiver pickup than expansion draft IMO

I would assume Toronto wants me to pick Kerfoot and open up cap space. My bet would be they trade a pick with Kerfoot to get Spezza back. Spezza at league minimum is very valuable to a cap team.

I doubt Francis would be that cut-throat, but I would be lol

I like Dermott, but I think his time is coming to a close here and the Leafs would be wise to test the waters Pre-expansion given that he'll more than likely be exposed under either format AND it shouldn't be difficult to meet exposure requirements if he is moved.

Holl is exposed in a 7-3-1 and Bogosian/Hutton extended in place of Dermott in a 4-4-1 where Holl is protected.

Holl can’t be protected unless we sign another defenseman who meets exposure requirements, regardless of what format we choose.

Also, I believe Brooks and Anderson are eligible to be selected, but don’t meet the exposure requirements.

If you were a player, would you sign in a place knowing you could get claimed by another team?

I'd wait till after expansion and sign when I know I'll stay there.

If I were a borderline NHLer, like Ben Hutton, fighting for a spot and I were offered a one-way contract, would I refuse it?

I guess it depends on my medical history. How many concussions have I suffered to this point?

Leafs will have 5 dmen who meet exposure requirements once qualifying offers have gone out, so yes, they can go 4-4 if they choose

Ben Hutton easily gets a contract.

If you were fighting for a spot, wouldn't you want to sign with a team that actually wants you for more than expansion draft numbers?

I'm not sure QOs count. It specifically says they have to be under contract for 2022.

I'd protect Joey Anderson and Adam Brooks before both Dermott and Holl anyway.

I am. :)

Edit: cap friendly seems to think RFAs only work for exposure requirements for goalies

If teams were able to essentially block Seattle from taking RFAs because they had only been qualified and not fully signed it would seem to be a pretty big loophole to get around the other expansion rules. It would essentially mean that they wouldn't need to use an protection slot on any rfa in that situation.

Which means I can't see that being the case.

They are not blocked from being selected. Unsigned players just don’t count for the 2-1-1 that must be exposed.

Sorry, I meant Engvall would be the person selected, not traded

He, Hutchinson and then re-sign Hutton (we need to re-sign he or Bogosian pre-expansion anyway) would ensure we meet requirements.

It's not like those contracts haven't been signed in the past. Guys like Hutch specifically got a contract because of expansion.

Anyway, we'll talk about this when the draft actually happens.

I'm assuming that Ron Francis isn't a moron and the leafs can sign more defencemen if they want. You're assuming the opposite.
