I thought this would happen much later in the summer, as there's no real rush to get it done now.

What's interesting is he's a third forward that meets the exposure requirements, which facilitates moving Kerfoot (or Engvall I guess).

In my mind, Kerfoot has too much value and should be traded if we going to lose him.

What would his value be? Well, comparing him to Kapanen comes out fairly favourably. Kerfoot can play centre, and some teams even seem to think at 2C. He's coming off a strong playoffs. In Kapanen's favour, he was higher pedigree. Of course, we can't forget that the Kapanen deal was probably an overpayment.

I don't think a late 1st is out of the question, and I think a 2nd plus a mid doing pick is a reasonable price.

Definitely need to recoup some picks somehow.

You'd need to see NHL teams that have a forward spot open for the expansion draft.

Kerfoot is gonna average 1.6-1.8M average salary after we pay the signing bonus July 1st.

As of right now, if we trade Kerfoot, Nylander gets exposed, right?

So who gets exposed? We must expose 2 guys, and we only have 6 that currently qualify - Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Kerfoot, and Engvall. If we move Kerfoot before the draft, we still have to pick a second guy to expose.
You really think they'd expose Nylander instead of just signing some guy thats eligible to be exposed?

Ok, so Spezza gets exposed…. And that’s actually who I’d take if I’m Seattle.

No. They won't. Spezza only wants to play for the Leafs and nobody else. He'll retire if he's forced to play for anybody else. Don't you remember Spezza saying that after the Leafs waived him during the season?

The other potential guys exposed likely have more raw value to Seattle. Especially of Spezza makes it clear he won't report anywhere else as he did when the Leafs waived him and the rest of the league could have taken him for free and no one took him

We have Engvall and now Spezza who qualify. Spezza obviously unlikely to be what Seattle is looking for, but still fills the requirement.

We can also sign Ben Hutton if we wanted to starve Seattle on D.

I wonder what identity the Leafs will try to form with their 3rd and 4th line. The last couple seasons, it has seemed like a bunch of mismatched parts hoping to come together. Bringing back Spezza signifies that the 4th line will likely be a mixture of player styles.

If we resign Foligno, what do the numbers look like?

He's 33 and I'm not sure how his health is going to keep up...seems like his body is breaking down year after year...do we take him 3 years at $4 million per? Would he agree to that?

Kerfoot is attractive to Seattle, but nobody else would be.

If my options were Engvall or nothing, I’d take nothing… but that’s not an option, since Seattle has to pick something. Spezza retires, so that’s nothing.

Depends how cut-throat Francis is. They could probably trade Spezza’s right back to Toronto.

The league could probably toss a fine at the Leafs if any retirement threats come from Spezza. This would be the second time, so obviously the Leafs were in on it, and it’s a subversion of the expansion draft rules.

If Hutton wanted to go to Seattle, he would just sign there, right?

I just don’t see anyone signing a contract knowing they could get claimed by another team.

My moves for the off season.

Kerfoot (3.5M) is selected by Seattle.
Reilly (5M) and Engvall (1.25M) traded to SJ for Evander Kane (7M)
Dermott dealt for prospects or picks

David Savard signed as FA (4x4.5M)
Casey Cizikis signed as FA and brought home (3x3M)
Zack Hyman resigned 4X4.5M
Gally resigned 2x1.5M
Bogo resigned 2x1.5M
Rittich resigned 2x1.5M
Spezza resigned vet min
Simmonds resigned vet min

Kane-Matthews-Marner
Gally-Tavares-Nylander
Micheyev-Cizikas-Hyman
Simmonds-Brooks-Spezza

Brodie-Holl
Muzzin-Savard
Sandin-Bogo

Campbell
Rittich
Sign Perry & let Simmons go...

And I’ve seen the Marner, Rielly for Konecny, Provorov proposal a few times now. Are people so desperate for change they want to make the team significantly worse to do it?

I may be a bit biased, but I love Provorov. I wanted us to draft him in 2015. He has such a high IQ. I foresee him continuing to develop into a #1D based on his toolbox. He's also an iron man......I don't think he's missed one game. A genetic freak! This, to me, means he's going to be around the NHL until his late 30s, at the very least. Also, even if his skill is close to Rielly's, he gives us the powerful slap from the point. We desperately need that.

Konecny is obviously not the same player as Marner. However, as mentioned, he's waaaaaaay cheaper and has potential for 82 points with Matthews (he was trending toward PPG 2 years ago). He is truly a rat too. Just check out some of the "Mic'ed Up" videos to see. LOL He hasn't shown it yet, but he has the attitude and potential to be a playoff performer, IMO.

So Provorov + Konecny = around 12 million with a lot of term
Marner + Rielly (let's say we signed him to a very cheap 6) = 18 million

That difference means adding one more very significant player or 2 top-9 free agents with grit or tenacity or whatever we're looking for.

I definitely make this deal.
