Canucks: Sutter, Kerfoot could help solve riddles in the middle | The Province

Which brings us to Vancouver native Alex Kerfoot. At 26, he has two years left on his Toronto Maple Leafs’ contract at a palatable US$3.5 million annual salary cap hit. And he has been on the Canucks’ radar.

The Leafs aren’t expected to protect the centre for the Seattle Kraken expansion draft. The cap-strapped club needs to sign first-line UFA winger Zach Hyman. He’s in store for a big jump from his expiring US$2.25 million annual hit after a season in which he complied 33 points (15-18) in 43 regular-season games. The Leafs can’t afford to lose him to free agency.

They also can’t take on salary in a possible Kerfoot deal but may be persuaded to take a draft pick or prospect. And if the Canucks truly believe they’re two years shy of being a competitive force, this is worth a kick of the trade tires.

The Canucks chased Kerfoot hard before the college free agent signed a two-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche in 2017 and then put up 32 points (12-20) in his first 45 games as a second-line centre.

“I had a good meeting with the Canucks — Trevor Linden, Travis Green and Jim Benning — and I was impressed,” Kerfoot said at the time. “But at the end of the day, Colorado offered more (opportunity) and it was hard to turn down.”

The Canucks could also consider a number of possibilities to address their roster next season. A lot of scenarios are on the table, but Kerfoot between Highmore and Vasily Podkolzin quickens the possibility pulse.

I do think it is worth exploring the price teams will pay for Kerfoot pre-expansion.

I don't really know if Dermott has a place on this team anymore, so if it comes down to lose Kerfoot in expansion and trade Dermott or trade Kerfoot and lose Dermott in expansion, then you have to weigh both options. If you can get more in trade for Kerfoot than you can for Dermott, make that trade.

Not a fan of the Reilly deal, we cant deal him, unless we have a #1 d-man, and you leave us without one for a flakey winger.

No need to worry on that trade - it makes no sense for San Jose.

Flake or not, Kane is one of the few legit first line-worthy power forwards left in the game.

My moves for the off season.

Kerfoot (3.5M) is selected by Seattle.
Reilly (5M) and Engvall (1.25M) traded to SJ for Evander Kane (7M)
Dermott dealt for prospects or picks

David Savard signed as FA (4x4.5M)
Casey Cizikis signed as FA and brought home (3x3M)
Zack Hyman resigned 4X4.5M
Gally resigned 2x1.5M
Bogo resigned 2x1.5M
Rittich resigned 2x1.5M
Spezza resigned vet min
Simmonds resigned vet min

Kane-Matthews-Marner
Gally-Tavares-Nylander
Micheyev-Cizikas-Hyman
Simmonds-Brooks-Spezza

Brodie-Holl
Muzzin-Savard
Sandin-Bogo

Campbell
Rittich

Multiple millions over the cap...

If true that Vancouver might have some interest in Kerfoot then I would look at a package with them,

To Toronto-
JT Miller
1st round pick
2nd round pick

To Vancouver-
Kerfoot
Rielly

Trade both. If we re-sign Bogosian or Hutton, then we can expose one of them for the defensive expansion requirement. We have Engvall for the forward expansion requirement.

Seattle just ends up taking Bogosian/Hutton, Engvall, Anderson, or Brooks. Not a big deal to replace any of those guys (although I would love to see what we have in Anderson personally), and we should get some great picks back for Kerfoot and Dermott.

We can turn to UFA to replace Kerfoot, Dermott, and any of those guys we lost to expansion.

@Cor Any transcription/interesting tidbits from the Leaf Report Podcast with CJ on it? You're my go to guy when it comes to radio segments and all the media stuff haha.

Take out the picks and maybe they do that.

Another possible scenario: Leafs trade Kerfoot to Vancouver for a pick/prospect. Then work out a deal with Seattle for Muzzin with something small coming back. This frees up the necessary money to take a run at Hamilton.

Seattle would need to give up quite a bit if they want Muzzin (or any of our other top 3 defensemen) from us.

LeBrun: The Jack Eichel sweepstakes have begun, NHL coaching carousel news - The Athletic

Nobody said the Stanley Cup playoffs had to be over before Jack Eichel potentially gets moved.

And while I’m not saying the star center will get traded before the end of the playoffs, what I’m hearing is that conversations between the Buffalo Sabres and other interested teams are getting more intense and serious.

So read into that what you will. The next few weeks could be intriguing on that front.

And I would imagine Sabres GM Kevyn Adams would be counting on a first-round pick to be used the night of July 23 in this year’s draft in any package so the clock indeed is ticking.

Eichel, 24, has five years and $50 million left on his contract but there’s no question there are teams — at a certain price — who believe a change of scenery will reset his career.

Teams I believe make sense: Los Angeles, Minnesota, Anaheim, Columbus, Philadelphia and the Rangers, among others.

The Kings want to make a splashy move for a top-6 forward, the Wild could use another top center, and the Jackets (who have three first-round picks this year) of course really, really need a No. 1 center.

Nothing noteworthy.

They mainly just talk about what Shanahan and Dubas have done during their tenures and stuff.

It’s worth a listen, but no real tidbits speculation wise to pass along

What’s a reasonable contract expectation for Oleksiak?

I’d love him mentoring Lili on the 3rd pair. And that would be a helluva D corps.

Assuming Kerfoot gets taken by Seattle and Hyman walks, the Leafs have 15.98 milion to add to this roster

XXX-Matthews-Marner
XXX-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-XXX-XXX
Engvall-XXX-Spezza

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-XXX

Campbell-XXX

7 roster spots to fill...Would roughly equate to $2,282,888 per spot.

Yeah. Was another fairly firm opinion that Hyman is gone. And that the front office was having a good think about Rielly's future but hadn't commuted to trading him or anything else yet

Roast away! :)

I have my own thoughts...

Not sure Engvall gets Blais for one...

Dermott/Soup for Zacha is debatable

Did I undervalue the Janmark/Granlund contracts?

Eichel out of our division would be swell.

I still dread that he's going to Boston.

Yes it would, but for some reason I get the Boston vibe as well.

And I’ve seen the Marner, Rielly for Konecny, Provorov proposal a few times now. Are people so desperate for change they want to make the team significantly worse to do it?

I thought this would happen much later in the summer, as there's no real rush to get it done now.

What's interesting is he's a third forward that meets the exposure requirements, which facilitates moving Kerfoot (or Engvall I guess).

In my mind, Kerfoot has too much value and should be traded if we going to lose him.

What would his value be? Well, comparing him to Kapanen comes out fairly favourably. Kerfoot can play centre, and some teams even seem to think at 2C. He's coming off a strong playoffs. In Kapanen's favour, he was higher pedigree. Of course, we can't forget that the Kapanen deal was probably an overpayment.

I don't think a late 1st is out of the question, and I think a 2nd plus a mid doing pick is a reasonable price.

Definitely need to recoup some picks somehow.
