agreed. This is a culture thing.
it could also just be a maturity thing...
with JT out, of our top end talent, Nylander is 25, Marner is 24, and Matthews is 23
our best players are really still just children and still growing into their bodies.

Until they are in at least their mid 20's they still have a lot of filling out to do, and maturing, but, they are seeing first hand that talent alone isnt enough to win, and that is a lesson that i hope they learn from.
They had expectations this year, but, still didnt realize that, they still need to work harder than the other guys to win.

Teams that have won have seldom been led by their youngest players (last i can think of was Penguins with Crosby, Malkin, Fleury Letang, Staal etc), and losing JT was a much bigger blow than is being given credit for.
The second he went down, i though the series would be a toss up.

Better to not have all your eggs or at least 4 of them, in 1 basket.

Better to distribute some of the $$ so you're deeper and can absorb a loss like that easier.

Stamkos down? No problem, Point and Cirelli are there.

If Hedman or McDonagh go down, Sergachev is there.

I like having the 4 potential gamebreaker eggs ...they just need to 'mature' and be better insulated, and by that i mean, give them better options on their lines, not more Hyman types.

Kerfoot was the JT replacement, and honestly, 6 pts in 7GP is pretty damn good. 88 delivered.

Matthews and Marner got shut down. Not enough game breakers behind them because all our $$ is tied up.

Doesn't help that guys like Simmonds, Thornton and Soup really didn't help either.

they got shutdown because of Hyman ...insert Robertson on the LW and, he's a risk to score because of his shot, even Brooks would have been a better option because he can shoot the puck and is a better passer than Hyman. Simmonds would have at least taken a shot or done better in front of the net, because thats his role.
Kerfoot would have not been a great fit because he isnt a shooter either, he's a better passer, and likely would have been able to feed either other, but, wouldnt be a risk to score, so, similar result.
Hyman was a puck vacuum cleaner, he sucked it in, and didnt let it go, then made a big mess all over the place when he did.

Soup sucked, he was the opposite of Hyman where he'd just carry the puck and be useless with it, while Hyman sucked it up and did nothing.
Thornton shouldnt have played, and certainly not been on a PP
Simmonds should have got a shot on Matthews wing for more than the puck drop.

Sure but can you find those players (and a top goalie as somebody suggested yesterday) at Walmart ?

Debatable if Robertson is ready for a bottom 6 role never mind a top 6 role. Just not strong enough yet.

I was hoping Simmonds would at least have it in him to finish a check.

Robertson looked great beside Tavares in his limited sample size IMO. Obvious room for improvement but the transitional ability between Robertson and Nylander comes in waves. I think that’s his eventual landing spot once he works his way up.

Simmonds was flat out underwhelming. His physical play is completely done. Wouldn’t even offer him 1m for what he brings.

i completely agree, he needs to add mass and strength, but, he's not that different from Caufield, he's just younger

I think Robertson likely starts on the second line, but that's out of necessity. He shouldn't start there, but we're cap-strapped and likely can't find a good option.

he's the type of player though, that if he isnt on the top 2 lines, his skill will be wasted, and he'll be more open to failure ...on either of our top 2 lines, he'd be an afterthought as everyone will concentrate on Marner/Matthews and Tavares/Nylander and thats where he can really shine, by being the 3rd wheel, and underestimated. It's much more likely that he doesnt get as much focus/attention, and will be open to use his shot, and not important enough to concentrate on.
This is exactly the reason, i dislike Hyman on the top 2 lines. Hyman is not a finisher, but, Robertson is. Sadly, I do not think he can handle that load yet though, but, I hope he at least gets a chance to try.

1. It's probably too many trades. (Delete the Engvall one)

2. I don't think I gave enough for Kempe

3. Is that too much for Marner? I remember Jordan Staal returning 8th overall in a "good draft" (not amazing) along with Sutter, Dumoulin so maybe if anything drop the 2nd rounder from them? Marner has produced way more than Staal ever did.

Saad 5M x 4 years
Granlund 3.75M x3 years
Haula 2M x 2 years
Foligno 2.5M x 2 years
Perry 1 yr
McCabe 1-2 years at 2.75M
Hamilton 8M x 7 years
Bogosian 1 yr
Pysyk 1 yr
Bernier 1 yr

No way that much turnover takes place. 11 new faces?

We had some grinder guys too including Leivo and Marchment but got rid of them. Not to say they are great players, but they added an element we sorely lack
Agreed Marchment had more playoff goals then matty and Mitch this year and brought physicality.
replace summoned and Thornton with Moore and marchy and I’d love that.

To Toronto-
JT Miller
Nate Schmidt
Vasili Podkolzin
1st Round Pick

To Vancouver-
Mitch Marner
Morgan Rielly
Alex Kerfoot
2nd Round Pick

If Mitch and Matthews success is dependent on having a very specific player on their wing they probably shouldn't be getting paid top 5 in the league. At the end day it was on Matthews and Marner to preserve and they wilted in the face of adversity once again.

Who knows... with the way Keefe rotated people around. Thornton from top line to 4th line... Sandin in then out... dermott in... double shifting Matthews and Marner

I bet it gets pretty hard for the players to any rhythm going. Meanwhile the successful teams are rolling 4 lines.

I'm really not sure it's the players or the coaching/management. It was like last season when Robertson was pulled for a rusty Johnsson in the elimination game.
