NHL Rumour Roundup: Will Sabres move Eichel to the Western Conference? - Sportsnet.ca

There will be a long lineup of teams calling Sabres GM Kevyn Adams about a few of his players. Jack Eichel is the biggest name, but Sam Reinhart is coming off a good season of his own, is a 25-year-old RFA, and will be of interest to the teams seeking a centre. Rasmus Ristolainen is the blueliner Buffalo could trade but, really, anything is on the table.

“I think they want to start over,” Elliotte Friedman said on the latest 31 Thoughts podcast.

As far as Eichel goes, the New York Rangers are one team presumed to have interest and hold a number of assets the Sabres might find appealing. But you could understand if Buffalo preferred to move him out of state at least, or further — the less they meet him and remind fans all over again of what they lost, the better?

On WGR’s The Instigators this week, Friedman discussed how the Sabres would rather move Eichel to a Western Conference team.

“I do believe it’s heating up,” Friedman said of the Eichel trade market. “I believe the Sabres’ preference is to send Eichel west. Some of the eastern teams I’ve spoken to or heard from say they can tell the Sabres aren’t as thrilled with the idea of him being in the same division and/or conference. I think some of the eastern teams believe if they’re going to get him it’s really going to cost them.”

The Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild are a couple western team speculated to be in on Eichel.

The Anaheim Ducks are involved, too.

“I definitely think there’s something going on there,” Friedman said on his podcast about the Ducks’ interest in Eichel. “The other thing too is Anaheim wasn’t willing to include (Trevor) Zegras or (Jamie) Drysdale for (Pierre-Luc) Dubois. I’m curious to see how this grinding goes for Eichel.”

Friedman also mentioned the Ducks would be interested in Reinhart, though acquiring both players would be tough to pull off. More likely is that every team interested in Eichel is also interested in Reinhart to some degree, knowing the cost of acquisition wouldn’t be as high.

If the Sabres are going to reconstruct their path forward again, prospects and high picks will have to be the key pieces in any return.

Was looking at a few things with my morning coffee.

1. Erik Haula could be a really nice target for the 3C role. Should only cost in the 1.5M-2M range he is currently in. Didn't realize he was as good on the draws as he is.
2. Seems like Cedric Pacquette's game picked up when he was in Carolina, versus what it was here in Ottawa. I'd take a shot on him at 4C. He won't provide any offense, but his underlying numbers were really good in Carolina, and dude throws hits. A 4th line of him, Spezz and Joey Anderson would be fun to watch.
3. If Morgan Rielly is to be traded, I like the idea of something involving Bryan Rust. Pens fans seem onboard for the idea. We have a recent trade history with them.
4. Travis Dermott, & Pierre Engvall will almost certainly be traded to recoup draft assets. I think LA is a fit for Dermott (get our third back, + another pick?) and I think SJS could be a fit for Engvall (get our 4th back?). Alex Kerfoot could be dealt as well. We could trade all 3 prior to expansion, and still meet requirements if we re-sign Hutton and/or Bogosian before the ED (which we need to do regardless). [In this scenario, I think we would see Adam Brooks or Joey Anderson selected by Seattle]

Trading guys before the expansion draft might hurt their value because teams would argue that they don't want to use an expansion slot on them.

If the leafs can't sign Hyman, they should do a sign and trade but also eat a signing bonus too. Wonder what they could get for it?

Haula would be a good 3c.

Pittsburgh is already over the cap for next season, aren’t they? And they already have 5 defensemen making over 4 million. They would have to unload one of those guys at the very least before acquiring Rielly.

Philly may make the mossy sense for Rielly. They could use a good D and they have some cap space, though not a lot. Adding Rielly would leave them about 10 million to sign Hart and Sanheim.

If, and only if we have Hamilton lined up, Rielly goes to Philly for a package of futures - 1st pick, Nolan Patrick, Wade Allison, or Mason Millman would be options. Maybe Philippe Meyers comes back to balance some salary.

The killer instinct and the fact the Leafs haven't been able to connect with Perry the last 2 years, this last one especially hurting us makes me think they might finally make it happen this year, the fact he's gonna come in on the cheap makes it all the more appealing.

Have any of these websites run scenarios on signing depth guys like Cole to multi year deals? Or are you aware of anything like this?

The reason that I ask is you're gambling as an organization on a guy that will likely remain in that position (#5-6) for the remainder of his career and you're trying to lock in some sort of cost certainty on the cap and some guarantees to the player to still have a job for another 2 years. The only benefit that I would see is that you can bring down the AAV IF the player exceeds expectations and requires an increased salary to be brought back.

EvolvingWilds is based on historical comparisons so it wouldn't take into account contract structures that go beyond what is the norm.

What you suggest makes sense. Though I suppose teams may prefer one year type deals as a backup in case the player doesn't work out

I think Dermott + Kerfoot are traded with Engvall gone in expansion.

I don't think 4C is a priority between Brooks and Semyonov. Leafs probably want to give those two a chance to win the job, but may bring in a guy for depth.

Yeah, that is what I figured Pacquette would be. Pacquette can also be a guy on the LW as well. Only issue with Brooks and Semyonov is we don't know what either is. One of them could grab the spot, or they may not, and we are left paying trade deadline prices for a fourth line player, assuming we are in a spot to buy at the deadline.

Guys like Paquette are risks as well.

I find it hard to believe the Leafs would bring in Semyonov without giving him a legit chance at the 4C job, and they probably look at Brooks as his insurance. Only thing I can see them also doing is adding another guy like Boyd (although likely not Boyd himself) to compete for the 4C job and otherwise ends up on the Marlies. That could be Paquette if he comes at league minimum, which is likely all he gets anyways. Frederik Gaudreau from PIT is another option.

I have this feeling that the Kings might be where Rielly ends up possibly with Kempe coming to us. Who knows, maybe they'll take Engvall as well and we can get some other stuff like picks or a prospect.

Rielly for Rust an absolute no go.

Downgrade on abilities, position, age. If we move Rielly, it should be for pure futures or we get the edge in age and upside elsewhere on the roster and we can spend his cap money elsewhere doubling down on the return. Rielly for Rust is a worse return than Colorado got for Barrie from us.

10+ million available with Freddie, Kerfoot, Hyman, Thornton, Simmonds all leaving. Should be able to target 1-2 key middle 6 UFAs.
So your plan is to use the money from 5 players and use it for 2 players? That sounds like it should work. :sarcasm:
