According to CJ, the formula will not change next season.

Line 1 - matchup + scoring
Line 2 - scoring
Line 3 - defensive
Line 4 - Spezza

We never got to see it but Hyman - Foligno - Mikheyev 3rd line would be quite effective.

I do wonder if Foligno comes back. I think it was CJ who mentioned that he wonders if Foligno comes back for a year. Apparently Foligno was really excited to play in Toronto and was pretty devastated it ended up the way it did with his injury right when he got here.

If he comes back at less than 2 million, it solves a lot of cap problems.

Miles Wood - Auston Matthews - William Nylander
Nick Foligno - John Tavares - Mitch Marner
Nick Robertson - Mikael Granlund - Josh Archibald
Andrew Cogliano - Nolan Patrick - Jason Spezza
Adam Brooks

Jake Muzzin - Dougie Hamilton
TJ Brodie - Timothy Liljegren
Rasmus Sandin - Justin Holl
Travis Dermott

Jack Campbell
James Reimer

Bogosian was not that great. He is worth around the same that he got last year as a solid #6, but if he decides to move on, the Leafs are not going to have a tough time replacing him for around the same money.
Who are you thinking may be able to be a good cheap replacement?

I honestly dont want a defensive 3rd line unless we get really effective 2 way players that can score as well. I want our 3rd line to be able to chip in offensively. Hopefully Robertson can be a big part of that.

Mikael Granlund or Erik Haula would be good for that.

Alex Wennberg maybe... Derick Brassard would be a cheap gamble. Nick Bjugstad would be a gamble.

The current situation is that Keefe really trusts Matthews defensively but doesn't trust Tavares/Nylander or Spezza that much. So that 3rd will always have to have a defensive focus. If you want a 2-way guy, it'll cost something the leafs can't afford.

I think Robertson should acclimated to NHL minutes with Spezza or Tavares.

Tatar would be a good buy low candidate, depending on how much his perceived value has actually lowered despite being a pretty great player. It'll be interesting to see what team gets him and how he does

Whenever I think of cheap defensemen, I go to what I call my "Dylan DeMelo Method." Go to your prototypical Western Conference contender or a team that plays a heavier game and take a look at some of their younger 5th-7th defensemen and see what kind of guys are being groomed for bottom pairing roles.

Bjugstad quietly had pretty solid season for the Wild. He got some tough defensive usage and did well handling it. He also likely won't be looking for much money.

Could be a smart pickup for the team if he walks in free agency

If he's in the same tier as Bogosian, why is he getting a lot less?

Bogosian got $1M. What the hell are you talking about?

Please don't tell me that you think the guy who played 3rd pair minutes for the leafs and was just above average is going to get $2M+ this offseason.

Didn't you say we can't afford Bogosian, so we should get Cole instead? If they're in the same tier, why won't they get paid in the same tier?

Bozak would actually be interesting as the 4th line C on the Spezza line.

If he comes cheap I'd be ok with him, he's a decent all around player, but was really good for us on faceoffs. Problem is he's 35 now...

Someone else I'd be interested in from the Blues is Mike Hoffman, guy is a scorer where ever you put him, playoffs included. His shot would really help our powerplay aswell and we do need top 6 LW aswell. I realize hes not some huge gritty player but he can chip in.

Cole will definitely be on a reasonable contract. He was traded for Greg Pateryn midway through the season. I understand the context of why he was traded from Colorado, but lets not pretend he's a 4mill guy. You can get him for something similar to what Holl is signed for.

Is he going to be cheap?

I think EvolvingWilds contract model predicts he gets a hair over 1 mil aav. Like 1.2mil or close to it. So could end up being in that ballpark.

He was a bottom pairing D man with the Wild. He's not exactly going to be jn a position to ask for a lot of money. I'd hope the Leafs have interest in him though, hes another guy who had a quietly good season

So he’s a downgrade from Bogosian?

If we don’t bring Bogosian back, I would rather give Liljegren a shot rather than bring in some plug.

I like Bogosian more but wouldn't be unhappy with a Cole signing.

Hopefully Liljegren is ready to go too, though the Leafs still likely need 1 vet in that #5-7 D rolesl.

Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie, Holl are locked into the top 4. Dermott, Sandin, and Liljegren battle for the 5-7 slots.

You only need a vet #6 if the coach idiotically attaches 5-6 together.

Have any of these websites run scenarios on signing depth guys like Cole to multi year deals? Or are you aware of anything like this?

The reason that I ask is you're gambling as an organization on a guy that will likely remain in that position (#5-6) for the remainder of his career and you're trying to lock in some sort of cost certainty on the cap and some guarantees to the player to still have a job for another 2 years. The only benefit that I would see is that you can bring down the AAV IF the player exceeds expectations and requires an increased salary to be brought back.
