Seattle selects Kerfoot from the Leafs but Hakstol likes others from the Leafs exposed such as Dermott and Engvall.

Leafs work a side deal with Seattle for them to select Max Domi and flip him to the Leafs for Dermott and Engvall.

Domi slots in nicely in the top six either next to Matthews or Tavares. Brings some grit, skill and passion to the Leafs which they sorely miss.

Thoughts?

I hate Domi and want him nowhere near this team.

He is exactly what this team needs. Another Tucker or Gallagher type that gets under people's skin. He has skill and if paired with someone like Matthews or Tavares, could be a great buy low option to thicken the teams skin as upper management is looking to do.

I agree. He's got some untapped offense in him and was very effective initially in Montreal before moved.

Seattle would need to retain.

Also, not sure how much of a fan Hakstol is of Dermott.

God no. Team has enough issue they don't need to compound it by adding that head case and his dad.

What does Domi make this year coming up? Wouldn't mind that deal if it worked salary wise

He's an entitled, horrible locker room presence guy. He's NOT the type of guy you change a culture around/for/with/via. He has been hated in each/every team he's played for growing up (for good reason). The only allure I see Toronto fans having with him is that he can fight from time to time and his last name is Domi.

$5.3M AAV and $6M salary. To acquire probably not that much but to get the 50% retention it would mean more assets they don't have to spare. I am against him for the cost, not the player although I have no faith that Keefe can help him find his best game either.

The more I think about the move... for Hallander and a 7th... this isn't all that bad of a scenario.

Still a side deal possibly... or they have a ufa lined up that we're getting that would replace a kerfoot or McCann loss.

Otherwise protecting Holl doesn't make much sense. Yes I know they'd be looking for another Holl then too... but i don't know... a lot of people seem split on him... but I think people forget he's playing along side Muzzin... who I think is underrated.

#2 is the best option IMO.

The other option I wouldn’t have minded is — don’t make the McCann trade, let Seattle take one of Kerfoot or Demott, and take the freed up money into the free agent market while filling either of the player’s taken internally (ie. Liljegren for Dermott).

I have this happening, but Seattle gives us picks instead of a roster player.

They select Engvall and then we trade them Kerfoot for a price that exceeds what Engvall would have picked up in a trade, but is less than what Kerfoot would have received in a trade.

For example, if Engvall was worth 99th overall this year, perhaps we get 67th overall and a 2022 5th instead.

Seattle still gets Kerfoot, but they don't need to pay his 2 mill bonus, and they get Engvall too. The Leafs still trade Engvall (which I anticipate they would have done anyways) but they "bought" 32 spots and a 5th round pick for 2 mill in Kerfoot's bonus money... And perhaps that arrangement also keeps their hands off of McCann and Dermott, which has value in itself.

I am starting to wonder if the 4-4-1 was a way to ensure greater depth at defense and to then help facilitate a Rielly trade to help find additional cap space.

Scenario 2 and 3 are good and, if that happens, I will give props to Dubas for his masterplan.

Scenario 1 is not good though. I don't know why these writers keep saying we gave up Hallander and a 7th to keep Kerfoot. We gave up Hallander, a 7th and McCann to keep Kerfoot. Saying just Hallander and a 7th is a half-truth. There was a trade. We can't pretend it didn't exist.
I bought a lawnmower for $200 but someone stole it. I went to the insurance company to get both my $200 and my lawnmower back. They said I only can have one or the other. Will you come with me to explain why I should get both back?

I didn't state things as I intended in my initial comment. It wasn't meant to be such a concrete statement but it came off as one.

No need for any more patronizing scenarios. I get it.

I thought he did well here. Who would you like as 3rd line winger instead? Not sure if you would get more production just because you pay more.

I have no problem with simmonds, spezza, and galchenyuk. I think with cap the way it is, these types of players will be more available for reasonable money.

Galchenyuk was OK. I would hope to get somebody better than 10-12 goals with horrific defensive play.

Regardless of the expansion outcome, whether it's Kerfoot or McCann or Dermott, we'll still be in need of a LW that can play regularly in the top 6 with good results. No idea what to expect there, but Im not sure Im a fan of the recent rumours about chasing Granlund again for that role. At least there doesn't appear to be interest in bringing back Thornton.

I'm still hoping Hyman comes down on his price and we can make it work. If he doesn't, I still hope someone like Schwartz is high up the list.

Aren't bonuses paid on July 1st?

Hakanpaa is exactly what this team needs on the blueline. I really hope Toronto picks him up in free agency

If he is willing to be a 7th defenseman, then sure. He can probably get a top 6 job somewhere though.

We have Brodie, Holl, and Liljegren at RD.
