The only upgrade would be waiving Reaves to give them 1.8M in space.

I cannot see a guy like Reaves making the team under Berube considering how Kyle Clifford's brief tenure with the Blues went.

I think a good way to get out of this jam the team has put themselves into with as little pain as possible is to either waive Timmins and Holmberg or package them in a trade for picks to use as ammo at the TDL. Timmins as far as I’m concerned is a non-factor. I’d like to sneak him through waivers so he can be ready for emergency call-up but otherwise I’m not losing sleep over him.

Holmberg I actually like but if I’m looking for a guy you could remove from this roster and not feel his absence too much, it’s him. He’s not as offensively gifted as a lot of guys on the roster, and while Kampf is overpaid he’s better defensively and more reliable in the difficult minutes the Leafs will throw at him. Dewar is a grittier version of Holmberg and can play centre too. If the Leafs do go the waiver route with Holmberg I really hope he sneaks through.

Of course Pacioretty would need to take a league minimum deal or at least close to it for this to really work.

Waive Reaves, Kampf and trade Robertson for a prospect who is waiver exempt.

Two are very easily done, the other should be doable.

I have this feeling that we are going to move someone out, to accommodate Patches, and in a few months we are going to be saying..man Patches is crap. I hope he doesn't make it.

Really neither Lorentz or Patches are good enough, at least based upon how they've played the last few years. Maybe Patches has some miraculous recovery, but I doubt it.

Kampf seems like the obvious choice to move here to create as much flexibility and carry extra bodies on the roster.

I’m not too concerned over the PK as well since the backend has definitely improved there. McCabe - Tanev and OEL - Hakanpaa with Benoit there as well if needed on the PK.

He's expensive for a 4th liner for sure. I don't think we can externally replace him though.

But, if any two of Minten, Holmberg and Dewar can secure two C's spot... well, I have no problem moving Kampf.

You can't necessarily replace Kampf,.but the team could potentially restructure the bottom six more radically so they don't need to have a centre play such lopsided defensive minutes.

That said, the Kampf extension was one of Tres first big moves as Leafs GM, I'm skeptical he'd want to trade him

Personally I play the patience game, and give some people some rope. Give Holmberg some time to see if he can solidly be a 3C. If he can’t, his time with the Leafs is nearing its end.

Judge Minten this year. Watch and see if Quillan or Pare have the types of games that might succeed in the 3/4 spots.

I’d hate to trade more assets for fill these holes, if we can potentially back fill them ourselves.

Heck, even try Nylander/Marner as a 2C and push Tavares to 3C. Experiment a little.

I agree with a lot of this post. I'm extremely high on Holmberg and believe he can be our 3rd line center now and for the future. Unfortunately, I don't think you see Tavares being a center past this season and he would be moved to the wing.

I hope JT signs elsewhere, good vet, but losing him and another piece of the core helps change the culture, and creates a opportunity to redistribute the cap more evenly throughout the team…….

I’ll point out his 28.6% shooting in the playoffs points to luck, not some skill we should be excited about. He also only put up 3 points in the regular season. He’s not that good.

You just described several players on the Leafs, Holmberg isn’t alone in this that’s for damn sure…….
