Marner for sure is overpaid. I think his market is around 9M, so he's about 1.9M overpaid. Thankfully, due to the structure of Marner's deal, his contract is still a positive, due to the real dollars owed of it. However, unless we decided to trade Marner, that doesn't really help us

I think the better decision would have been to give Marner a bridge deal. We had just signed Matthews to the big deal, just had brought in Tavares. We should've kicked the can down the road a couple seasons, because signing Marner now, would've been a ton easier, given the flat cap era we're in, among other things.
However, if not for the pandemic, the cap would've risen last off-season, and would've risen this season, and would've risen considerably next off-season. In a rising cap, the big 3 contracts are a lot more workable. Because over those three off-seasons mentioned, there would've been close to an additional 8M-11M in cap space to use.
Hence why, a portion of those saying "Trade Marner" aren't looking it at a "lol soft boy" "lol choker loser" perspective, but rather a "you had a certain financial plan in mind when the deals were signed, said plan is no longer possible, so now we need to adjust, because 3 11M dollar contracts in a flat cap era of 81.5M, doesn't work.
