As others have mentioned... apparently Jarnkrok isn't even practicing. He's a ways away and at this point, the Leafs are probably going to take a "wait & see" approach with him... maybe he's ready when they need a body? or they deal with that situation when he gets healthy.
He will be our TDL addition, lol

Maybe Lily to SJ for Benning.
Lily gets a chance. SJ are desperate for NHL d men. Benning can be depth or can be almost fully buried with the Marlies.

I have to think Brad would've taken a 3rd for Liljegren at this point.

Why would you prefer Maatta to him? He plays the wrong side, older, worse, no upside. Is the second year really that much of a dealbreaker?

Would he? I'm not sure.

Everything we've seen from Liljegren when he's played, this guy screams high quality top 4 defenceman if he can get his game together... while at this point he's probably worth less than a 3rd to us, there may be a sense of "I have to get reasonable value out of this asset".

As others have mentioned though... they're going to be missing Durzi and Marino for months. While the need is probably less urgent now, they could still make another addition.

I would need a pick or something at least to make this remotely palatable. Benning is below average, but being cheap could be ok for depth.

Once Dewar, Jarnkrok, Hakanpaa are healthy:

Liljegren + pick for Murphy

Kampf/Timmins out either in that deal or somewhere else

Demote Holmberg

Knies - Matthews - Marner

Pacioretty/Jarnkrok - Tavares - Nylander

McMann - Domi - Robertson

Lorentz - Dewar - Jarnkrok/Reaves

Rielly - OEL

McCabe - Tanev

Murphy/Benoit/Hakanpaa rotation

Keep Rielly and OEL focused on 5v5 and PP minutes.

Robertson + pick for Vatrano or B Tanev retained at deadline if Robbie doesn’t start figuring it out.

As others have said, I also think Hakanpaa (if healthy) will end up being Reilly's partner down the line. Reilly always plays the best with partners like that. Its odd

Rielly - Hakanpaa
McCabe - Tanev
Benoit - OEL

I sure hope not.
I hope this is a sign they value him better.
I’m not following the trade market closely, but in Utah’s case, they have tons of stuff …and Maatta isn’t a world beater, so I’d think there could still be a fit.

I like your optimism but I think at this point Tre might have to be looking to shed his salary and not have to pay to do it.

Rightly or wrongly for how some here view his potential still.

My own thoughts are he is a decent 2/3rd pair regular season dman that isn’t built for playoff success.

Just surprising the disconnect either between Tre and Berube on his ability or between Tre and Lily’s value league wide. Otherwise you don’t sign that deal.

Agreed Benning is injury filler depth at best but solves the cap dilemma.

OEL is our best defenseman right now. I'd let him rip as the main piece and see if he can blossom into a Petro.

Makes it difficult to pair up Rielly with Hak though as Benny needs to stay on the third pairing.

The Leafs are, however, getting to that juncture of the season where it's going to be a very critical period, most notably from the aspect of dealing with their salary cap. In order for them to fit someone in, someone else might need to go. According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, the Leafs have been getting calls for Calle Jarnkrok and Nick Robertson. Both of these players might just get traded at any time now, as teams reportedly have shown interest, given the Leafs' cap tightness.

Leafs Morning Take podcast hosts Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill had Pagnotta on for a recent episode to go over the Leafs' roster situation. They discussed at great length the impending return of Jarnkrok from injury, insinuating the forward with a lot of versatility could be on his way out to Los Angeles. Pagnotta did note that Robertson does have availability and is someone who would be somewhat easy to move with the interest in the young player.

Pagnotta added that while dealing Jarnkrok might look attractive once he's back, his recent injury and $2.1 million cap hit could complicate things. Versatility is one of the real driving factors of Jarnkrok's value but also something that could make other teams queasier, given the health issues he's presented.
On Robertson, if he is going to attract any interest around the league, the winger still has a ways to go as, outside of a great preseason, he hasn't yet translated into what many had hoped during the regular season to this point; there is still reason to believe he could attract the attention of some teams trying to find an upside.

With the Leafs near their cap ceiling and Jani Hakanpaa due back soon, a roster move seems imminent . Whether they trade Calle Jarnkrok, Nick Robertson, or perhaps someone like Timothy Liljegren in the days to come remains to be seen. And whatever happens now will continue being skillfully juggled around cap relief along with keeping the lineup reasonably competitive throughout the year.

Does anyone know exaclty how we will be cap compliant once

1. Jarnkrok (2.1M)
2. Dewar (1.18M)
3. Hakanpaa (1.47M)

All join the leafs?

We can send down Dewar as he is 100% buriable I believe but he would be likeky claimed and I like him more than Holmberg for us.

The leafs have potential for creating a lot of cap space and can add at the TDL/take on a bad deal (a guy who could be a bounce back candidate for usl for more picks to retool in the summer with.

Kampf (2.4M)
Lilijgren (3M)
Jarnkrok (2.1)
Hakanpaa (1.47M)

The above is ~9M and I am not sure if any of those guys will be playing Game 1 of the 2025 playoffs for us (assuming we make it, as is expected)

Hypothetically if all 3 are activated at the same time Leafs have a 26 player roster and are 3.5M over the cap. One obvious move is to waive Myers, which brings down the roster to 25 and 2.7M over the cap.

They could in theory waive Dewar, Reaves and Liljegren, which puts them at a 22 player roster and under the cap by about 700k. They would have around 2M of dead cap space though. The likehood is that they trade Liljegren for a minimal return but opening as much of the 3M of cap space he uses.

With Jarnkrok and Hakanpaa statuses fairly up in the air, the Leafs probably don't need to budge on making big roster decisions for a bit outside of Myers to be demoted once Dewar is activated.

I'd be fine moving Jarnkrok - I just don't think he plays a particularly important role in the playoffs.

He's not physical and his offence completely dries up in the playoffs. So pretty much all you're hoping to get from him is somewhat safe 5 on 5 play (but not the kind that physically wears down the opposition) and some secondary PK minutes.

I'm with you on needing players who wear down the opposition..

I've been preaching for a couple of years, about the need to get some size and physicality into the lineup. I've posted this before... but here it is copy and pasted.

Liljegren + Kampf to Utah for McBain
Jarnkrok + Holmberg to Columbus for Mathieu

Knies Matthews Marner
McMann Domi Nylander
Robertson Tavares Pacioretty
Lorentz McBain Mathieu
Reaves

$8.3 mil out $2.59 mil in.

Lorentz and Mathieu have 20 hits, McBain has 19. All three are top 30 in hits in the NHL. (This data was as of last week)
McBain 6'4" 219 lbs - 3 points in 7 games
Mathieu 6'1" 226 lbs - 4 points in 6 games
Lorentz 6'4" 216 lbs.

It gives us a big, heavy, physical fourth line, that can forecheck and chip in with some points. Utah gets their RD they need, plus a replacement C... and they have plenty of cap space. Columbus upgrades their offense, and have plenty of cap space.

Are these guys available? I really don't know, but this does a lot for us. It never hurts to ask. This is a playoffs, wear down teams 4th line.

-----------------------------

Now Robertson... who knows where that is going... maybe he's a guy who gets moved out... which ultimately I think we'd regret, but then, if he isn't producing... what are we going to do. But we have options... and Grebenkin is a guy I'd consider for the third line spot instead after some time... or Nylander... or perhaps someone from the outside??

I think the Avalanche would love to get someone like Jarnkrok in their lineup. They have a ton of injuries as well. They just lost Colton for 6-8 weeks.

I understand that Jarnkrok's lack of playoff production is frustrating but he's been a fairly good player despite the lack of production and adds an element of speed, forechecking and defensive ability. He's also been versatile up and down the lineup as a glue winger.

I'd be fine with trading him for cap purposes mostly but I think we'll miss him more than anticipated.

Not upgrading/removing these five in the offseason basically screwed this team this season. Over 9m+ in the toilet.

Liljegren $3,000,000
Kampf $2,400,000
Jarnkrok $2,100,000
Robertson $875,000
Holmberg $800,000
$9,175,000
