So you think Marner and Nyander are going to forecheck under Berube? Wake me up when that happens.

Marner did it under and was able Babcock especially the year he outplayed the Bergeron line at 5v5 with Plekanec and marleau

Forechecking is not only about hitting every thing in the corner, its not the way they can be good in forecheck but with an active stick. lift stick, cut passing lane with their stick and using their speed to pressure and creating fast reaction.
In the post-rebuild era, the Leafs didn't win in the playoffs under Babcock either, with a myriad assortment of complementary parts over the years between the two coaches. Keefe and Babs did not have identical systems.

Guess what all those teams had in common? Matthews, Marner and Nylander. What did all but two of those teams have in common? John Tavares.
Under babcock Zaitsev was amount best leafs d to defend... with an immature young core

I didn’t read this here earlier, but apparently Martin Jones would like to come back next year.

As reported by Joshua Kloke of the Athletic, goaltender Martin Jones who is a pending free agent would like to return to Toronto.

Jones who was a key part in the Leafs season staying afloat during Samsonov and Woll injuries formed a solid relationship with young netminder Joesph Woll.

With 7 years of experience on the young goaltender Martin Jones says he enjoyed the opportunity of the mentorship role.

Definitely take Jones back in the same role he had this past season, if he wants it.

Anyone read Duhatschek's piece in the Athletic? The Marner three-way deal with Calgary and Utah was interesting.

What was it?
I don't know if it's the same article but just type his name and Google and a free article comes up. Tons of trade scenarios.

My dream scenario is Markstrom and Andersson to the Leafs for Marner, then Calgary flips Marner to Utah with Kadri for two firsts and three seconds. — Stuart Y.

Toronto trades Marner to Calgary for Markstrom, 2nd round pick. — Nelson C.

it was the 1st scenario obviously.

I know some trade scenarios are silly sometimes and most never happen but sometimes it's fun to imagine.

My only hesitation with Utah, is that they likely use their picks on D rather than Forwards. All their best prospects/players are Forwards. They don't have a single NHL Defenceman signed for next year. They're the type of team I could see making a play for Seth Jones.

If you are saying this with confidence, then I am saying with confidence you have no clue who Alexander Nikishin is.

Carolina would never trade Nikishin as part of a package for Marner. Maybe if it was closer to straight up.

Considering Nikishin never signed an ELC contract I don't think the Leafs will be trading Marner for a guy whose rights expire either this July 1st or next July 1st (I'm not 100% sure on the rule but off the top of my head I think it is this year because he was drafted in 2020).

stats don't accurately encapsulate what either Tkachuk bring to a team, unlike the Leafs core players when the Tkachuk's aren't scoring they're still contributing, 34, 16, 88, 91, 44.....not so much........
contributed so much having more PIMS than points in the playoffs in Calgary; contributed all the way to quitting on his team

RE: Berube/Marner meeting

I said Berube looked like a disappointed parent but more than a couple people have told me that they get comfortable, cross their arms and just listen...so maybe Berube is intently listening to Marner?

I'm pushing for breaking up the big 4-5 guys to maybe 2-3 guys but I don't know if we should go bananas over Berube just crossing his arms in a conversation.

Sure there is a chance Berube is hearing Marner and thinking "This guy is bat shit crazy, he's goneeee" but let's see how things play out.
This is just both sides showing MM would stay in order to ask for a better package.

perhaps look at Tkachuck's playoff stats while on Calgary, they were pathetic.
he didnt become a better player, he got onto a team with a better coach who uses him properly.
If Marner doesnt improve under Berube, then you are correct, as Marner has been pretty good in the playoffs un until this past season where Keefe tried to 'spread the offense' and just killed it completely. Another coach may have loaded up the top line, but Keefe thinned out every line, and it cost them big time. (and finally him, his job, but, 3 seasons too late)

top 5 offensively, but when you factor in the 200 foot game, he's better than pretty much all of them.
We failed while loading up a top line for the past years.
Come on, Berube is not Jesus. He is not going to make JT to suddenly skate faster, Willie to be physical, Reilly to have a slapper and MM to attack the net and play with pace.
If anything, MM might struggle more as Berube is used to coaching players who play a more straight line direct approach to the game.

Ofcourse, this will always going to go back to how Tre constructs the team in the off season. If Tre agrees to run it back, his best bet to help MM is to pair him with AM. Since MM will get his stats just feeding off AM. Put Knies or even Holmberg or Calle as the 3rd wheel. Then rebuild Line 2 and 3.
Pretty sure, it will be another first round exit. But we will all be cheering for AM’s road to 70 goals with MM by his wing throughout the regular season.
By next year, we will be talking about needing a Better goalie, our top guys advanced stats were amazing and they are just unlucky not to face a goalie like Skinner or else they would had won a round….while the GOAL should always be winning the Cup and not a round.

Now that's something you don't see everyday.

Not sure how Cap works for the Kraken without moving a player or 2 out.

marner (new deal) and Kadri about about $20mm.

Leafs retaining for 2024-2025 season?
There was no retention in the proposal but I’d assume Calgary would be if there was.

Agreed. We're just having fun here.

However, it isn't without context ... new coach with a known style and a player with a known style.

A new boss and and employee who is part of a failing organization.

An employee who is asking for a raise.

A coach (work manager) trying to put together a team structure for his next season.

However, maybe they are talking about summer vacation, or what it's like starting a family, or just a let's get acquainted chat.

But this isn't two random humans without context.
You're trying too hard

I'd be interested if it were Weegar/Markstrom... we might even need to add a little to that.

Safe to say that if a player of their caliber forced their way off the Leafs at such a young age they'd be (justifiably) one of the biggest villains in franchise history

Something like Frank Nazar + Alex Vlasic is what I would want in a Mitch Marner trade. That is the kind of deal that ensures long term success.
I like trades like this... gives us long-term pieces, cost controlled... these kids would be with the team for nearly a decade.

Nazar + Vlasic
Wright + 1st.
Crouse + McBain + 1st (We'd be sending more than Marner)

The more I think about a deal with Utah, really like the idea of Geekie being apart of the deal.
