All those years of us adding fringe pending UFAs at the deadline. Could you imagine us if we'd actually have added 2 bona-fide good players with term or an extension in place?

That Nick Foligno was so horrawful. We needed to win that easy Canadian Division and all we got was a press conference superstar with a bad back.

Hard to go wrong picking up Hanifan with an extension but what's kinda strange with the acquisition is that Vegas currently has the same six solid defenders that won them the cup last year.

Not sure if someone is playing injured but they're paying a good price to fix what wasn't broken.

Long term strategy perhaps but maybe Guentzel was the better target for this year.

The Leafs have more salary on LTIR than any team other than Tampa (only because of Sergachev's recent injury).

Why do the Leafs always blow their draft picks in trades over the years??? Injured players etc. Seems like such a waste unless you have someone that will clearly turn the needle. Our depth in the minors is blah! We have wasted to much and over spent on salaries.

It's crazy that Vegas still holds power on that 1st rounder despite landing one of the biggest fish in the deadline sweepstakes. Hanifin really screwed the Flames on this one. But Craig Conroy doesn't seem like a bright light among the younger GMs either.

Honestly, that's impressive work by Vegas. Conditioning a pick on whether you even have it two days later is pretty incredible. They really will do anything to win.

Some people still keep echoing this false statement. How did Dubas "draft well". What is the measure of success for drafting? Here are the NHL players drafted by the Leafs during the time Dubas was the GM:

2018:
Rasmus Sandin (#29) - Traded
Sean Durzi (#52) - Traded
Pontus Holmberg (#156) - Current 4th liner.

No other picks are considered prospect status.

2019:
Nicholas Robertson (#53) - Hasn't yet established himself as a full time NHL player.

Mikko Kokkonen (#84) - Considered a prospect. Is he viewed as someone with NHL upside? (actual question as I'm not sure how his development has been going).

2020:

No Current NHL Players

Roni Hirvonen (#59) - Considered a prospect but isn't tracking well to be an NHL player (IMO).
Topi Niemela (#64) - Legit prospect that hopefully can become a full time NHL dman.
Ryan Tverberg (#213) - Considered a prospect but seems like a long shot to have an NHL career.

*Amirov (#15) - Rest In Peace young man (this pick is not up for debate and excluded from conversation regarding drafting performance ).

2021:

Matthew Knies (#57) - Established himself as NHL player, looks to be a good top 6 player.

No Prospects

2022:

Fraser Minten (#38) - A solid prospect that projects to be a solid 3rd line C in the future.
Dennis Hildeby (#122) - A good goalie prospect. Could have an NHL career (all goalies are hard to project).
Nikita Grebenkin (#135) - A promising prospect playing in the KHL. Has skills, will it translate to NHL?

In 5 NHL drafts (team would be awarded 7 picks per draft = 35 picks in total). Dubas and his scouting staff managed to select:

5 NHL players:
2 traded
Knies
Holmberg & Robertson still fighting to establish themselves as everyday NHL players.

7 Prospects (maybe, seems like a generous number).

I see a lot of really decent picks here. Not guarantees, but decent. Compare that to before him - we missed on so many picks. You haven't really changed my opinion here.

A very late 1st and a conditional 2nd for a guy who very likely is a top pairing player soon, just entering his prime is an absolute steal. I'm assuming he re-signs, of course. The guy going back to Calgary is a cap dump.
