Trades and UFA’s - Trade Deadline Edition

What a baptism of fire that would've been for Treliving. In the job a few weeks and bam, trade Marner.
True. He did have 6 weeks. Also it's not like he hasn't seen Calgary play the Leafs during his tenure with Calgary. And, Toronto's needs have been the same for the last 8 years... we lack grit/aggression, and our defence is crap. I am sure he could've arrange something.

I agree.

But, I think the move to be made was last offseason in trading Marner. Trevling thought otherwise.

Now we are stuck in this forward cap heavy situation for the next several years with everyone and their NMC.
isn't it just one more season until Marner and Tavares deals are up?

This is what makes Sakic great. He doesn't get too attached to guys and his goal is to always make the team better and not get stuck in bad contracts or ruin the team's cap or flexibility to make moves. Guy is always thinking multiple steps ahead.

That's all you want as a fan.

Oh for sure. But the Leaf way is going to be to sign Marner to 12.5 x 8 and JT to 6 x 4.

(Personally, I would let them both walk and then retool to find guys who fit the playoff mould. But I am an armchair GM).

He's certainly slowed down from where he was in the past (or looked it last time I saw the teams play).

I also think a 25 goals, 60 point guy whos (ignoring every stats analyst out there) good defensively would grab more of a return, no matter what kind of leverage no?

When a speedy player "loses a step" they don't become "so slow." Tarasenko's speed is still one his best assets, just behind his shot, and he's excellent one-on-one because his stick handling ability is borderline elite.

As for his value, if a player with a full no-trade clause only selects one team he is willing to go to, I don't see how the Senators can drive up his value. It is what it is.

I'm assuming you're talking about hockeybuzz.com, Brodie and Robertson for Parayko. I would do that in a heartbeat

This would be the greatest trade in franchise history. Two pieces I would be happy to get rid of in return for an excellent player that would address multiple needs and be an enormous part of the team moving forward.

This would be an absolutely outstanding move for the Leafs.

Why are you happy to "get rid" of Robertson?

You do realize Parayko's contract could be an anchor on this team as early as 2-years from now? He'll be virtually untradeable if he declines. I agree short-term will help but ... lots of risk there.

Personally, I think this offseason is where Tre will be building his team.
When you have a team who is on a 13-4 run up to the deadline and is top 10 in the NHL, you don't stand pat while the teams around you get better.

I can't see him doing that though. It's literally wasting a year with a top team.

Why would St. Louis make that trade? Just to get Nick Robertson? I would think there would be a better deal available to them if they simply wait.

I don't think Robertson is good enough to play in the top six on a good team and I think he's useless in the bottom six. He's what the Leafs don't need, a non-physical forward who offers absolutely nothing to the team when the puck isn't on his stick.

As for Parayko, the term on his contract is an enormous plus, not a negative. He would be an incredible addition and would hugely improve the team now, and for the next several years.
