More talk around Savard. Hate to give up a 1st for a 33 1/2 year old dman.

3 years ago at age 30 he was a bottom pairing dman for TB in the playoffs.

Expecting him to be a top pairing guy for us at age 33 is wishful thinking, and a waste of a 1st rounder. It's also a CLASSIC Leafs move, so I fully expect it to happen (eg Foligno).

The blues aren’t going to retain for 6 years
Exactly

Hence no colton

Would be a brain dead move by tre. But evidently shammy only likes to hire GMs who negotiate whilst reading negotiation for dummies

That would be an unattractive way to use a 1st round pick.

I'm trying to think of another way to complete the trade.

David Savard (50% retained)

for

Roni Hirvonen + Alex Steeves + 2024 NYI 3rd round pick

Steeves steps into the lineup right away. They give preference to Hirvonen on their AHL affiliate to get him up to speed. A high 3rd. That's 3 decent assets instead of 1 high quality asset. Savard at 1.75M for 2 years still isn't worth that 1st imo.

Turns out he was living in a medium level security prison since 2022

So he's scouted as much as the next "insider."
I think Tony DeAngelo would be more like the player the Leafs get. Comes dirt cheap without NTC/NMC, Carolina willing to retain and would be Klingberg's replacement. We are shopping in the bargain bin and need to keep our limited assets. Sizable portion of the team is unlikeable anyway...what difference is one more jerk going to make? Would you rather have Justin Holl from a different team's bargain bin? We're shopping at Value Village, not Saks Fifth Avenue.

Aren't we all looking for the "creative" moves they're going to make?

To Toronto: David Savard (50% retained) + Jake Evans + COL 2nd Rounder

To Montreal: TOR 1st Rounder + Alex Steeves

Would hate to deal our 1st and the best player in the trade coming back being Savard but if it happens, hopefully we can grab Colorado’s 2nd somewhere in the deal.

Evans would be a real good pickup. Can play center or wing, plays hard and can kill penalties.

It's more or less what I want to extend Liljegren for. 5-6 years around 4M or so.
Sure would be nice if we could extend Lilly like that, but they won't because "he hasn't proven anything", as if Sandin has proven any more than Lilly.

Seems like a lot but haven't really followed him since he left.
If he's worth that much, it seems like a mistake that he was moved.

If we’re dealing a 1st for Savard, I’d rather overpay using it for Saros. Saros would have a way bigger impact defensively than Savard.

Athletic player stats and value this season:

Offensive: 49th percentile
Defensive: 27th percentile

Market Value: 1.8 million

Seems a lot to pay for a kid that looks over his head in the 2nd pairing minutes he's getting but he's still young and on a poorish team I guess.

How has Lilijegren 'flat lined'? He's been playing pretty well most of the season outside of a few bad games and some bad mistakes here and there. Seems like even now people put him on a short leash where whenever he makes a few mistakes then he's 'regressing' or not doing well even when he's playing solid most of the time.

Why is it that Rielly constantly gets a pass for his less than stellar defensive play and gaffs? Lilijegren has never had that type of opportunity to make mistakes and be allowed to play through them all the time like Rielly has his entire career. Why not just let him play and let him gain experience and teach him to be better? Let him play every game in the playoffs at least 15-20mins and unless he's playing consistently poorly then don't punish him for a mistake here and there. If you want him to develop then you have to throw him into the fire sooner or later so that he can learn how to play under playoff pressure.

We did it for Rielly all these years so why can't we do the same for Lilijegren now?

Not sure why your case for Liljegren includes a what about Rielly angle. At 25, Rielly was a 72 point scoring defenseman in 2019. So even if he’s just as bad as Liljegren defensively, his production has hustorically justified the quality trade off. It’s not the same thing.
