Bertuzzi - Domi - Nylander looked bad last night. Not a great sign against a likely 1st round matchup. As much as I like Tavares on that 3rd line, something’s got to give with the 2nd.
I don't think there is any way we see that line in the playoffs.

We need a centre as much as anything. Go and get Henrique or Bjugstad. Henrique is a Brantford kid. Bring him home.

Our trade deadline add is the core 4 acting like they care about their teammates in the playoffs and not just their next contract. No greater add available

This is the key right? These guys continue to be no shows in important games and times. Somehow adding some support players is going to make a difference there?

For better, or worse, until they actually prove that they can consistently compete at key moments, it seems as though we know they can't. I get the optics aren't great... but I'm back to doing no trades at all. Continue to grow the prospect system, until such time as these guys either figure it out, or we move on from them.

""

How many games does Tavares have? He's the captain isn't he? They don't know that they have to be good for 60 minutes yet? After 1000+ games, he doesn't know that?

Matthews and Marner are in their 8th seasons.... and they don't know yet?

How many failures has this group had? How many lessons do you need?

If I'm the GM, and they fail to show up again on Thursday, I'm not making any trades. Just come out and say, none of the options were players that we thought were good fits at the cost... and be done.

It looks like a winger at the deadline is also becoming a need.
They need to move Knies down the lineup.
Been saying this for a bit now. Love Knies and he’ll be a top six winger in the near future but he’s not ready to play with Matthews and Marner and the competition those two get from opposing teams.

Would love to see the third line be Knies - Tavares - McMann. Jarnkrok moved with Kampf in a shutdown role.

That third line would also really benefit Toronto next season since re-signing McMann probably wouldn’t cost more than 900k to 1 mill. Replace Kampf with Minten and have a fourth line of Jarnkrok. - Minten - Holmberg. Cheap effective bottom six.

JT is on the Dubas boat. Excuses over excuses. Team has gone through a million lessons. BOS outplayed them flat out. Just shut up and go play hard

Sell. This team doesn't have the depth, consistency or compete to actually make a run in the playoffs. To many weak links who you can't play in big moments and you'll just burn out your top guys trying to keep up. Let alone need one of the three goalies go on the runs of their career

I really would like to see if JT would like to get a surgery in the off-season that'll keep him out of the regular season or if he'd be happy to finish off the year in Arizona with some sweet tax breaks or something (after we pay his bonus)

That contract is such a burden.

We seem to be opening up more needs than we fulfill at an alarming rate...
Couldn’t agree more. Winger to play with Matthews and Marner. Second line center that’s defensively responsible to play with Bertuzzi and Nylander. A top four defenceman, preferably a right shot. Questionable goaltending.

A lot of holes.

The contract is brutal but we can work around it for one more year. Re-sign McMann on a 1 year 1-way 900k deal. Have a third line of Knies - Tavares - McMann. Total salary of that third line would be 12.8 million, not terrible. There’s a lot of other dead weight. I like Domi, he’s extremely talented and probably on Marner level when it comes to passing but his defensive game creates such a hole. 2.4 million in Kampf as a 4th line center is awful as well.

Does it really matter when the 3 amigos play like they did like they did last night in big games? JT's contract is an anchor and you can keep changing the surrounding cast, but this team will only go as far as the greedy 3 will take them. And so far, it has not been very far.

Tbh, I am not sure we can get meaningful roster improvements at the TDL. Rather stand pat, accept the first round exit and make structural changes in the off-season.

However, I think it's clear that Brodie and Lilly need to go. They're not playoff quality defencemen. If you can use them to make the throw ins (e.g., picks or prospects) less, do it.

My god Leaf fans live in a bubble. The flat cap didn’t just ruin the Leafs. There is a reason why there is so much parity, no team running away with the presidents trophy, no cup favourite.

Every team right now has a bunch of holes. That’s the reality of the league. This is truly a season of anyone who gets in has a chance.
