what's the cost on Adam Larsson?

The bigger question being... is he actually available? Seattle is seven points out of a wildcard, with their next few games being against Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg. Hopefully they don't get many points and conclude they're out... then decide if they are going to be sellers at all.

I think he'd fit well, and at $4 mil, fits into our LT cap structure.

Edited to fix grave spelling error.. super tired today.. ugh.

Yup! Reality Vs Non-Reality

Reality: There is a salary cap and Leafs like other team(s) have to contend with that unless people want Tre to force Marner/Nylander/Matthews/Tavares to waive their NTCs to make cap room and add the Top2 D.

Leafs are also going in the playoffs with Samsonov (not a vezina guy) and potentially Woll (a rookie not proven yet IMO); Leafs should be realistic in how they approach the trades especially until Tavares is off the cap

Brodie coming off the books helps .. they have about $20 mill in cap space this offseason and 13 contracts to sign.

There's enough there to allocate some $ to the blue line for a defender for next year. Once Tavares is up that completely changes the cap structure as well.

Plus there is a high probability that we can fill some of our roster with ELC's. There is a chance that any of Cowan, Grebyonkin, Minten could make the roster... so we've got some cheap players, in addition to the ones we already have.

Keyword: This off season i.e. after the season is done. You will also need replacements for Domi and Bertuzzi (or re-sign them).

Any significant moves until Tavares is off the cap and we have some proven tenders in net instead of "we'll see what we get from him" is a big red flag for me.

Leafs have been needing a re-tool for a while; this is a time to just be a bit patient and plan for how roster will look like when Tavares is off the cap and then go for it.

For reference, I put together this. Realistically, not all of these guys are going to be on the roster... Need a G, probably a 3C, and 2D.. unless we think one of Holmberg/Minten can do the 3C... I also think Domi would come back near what he's paid now... I think 4 x $2.5 would get it done.

If you move out Timmins, and one ELC to the Marlies... sign Brodie at $3 mil, and Domi at 2.5...

Then we need a Goalie and one D, with nearly $9 mil... I think we'll be fine.

I agree a retool is needed... But if the right defender comes up that can be apart of it I have no issue pulling the trigger for next year and being more cost effective elsewhere. Especially if it's a coveted RHD

I.e. if Matt Roy can be signed to a fair deal, I think you go for it

The issue for me is that folks are still penciling Tavares as 2C. IMHO he is done as a center. His even strength production, his skating is not that of a top6 Center especially at his cap hit.

Any significant upgrade for the Leafs D is probably more realistic in the off-season unless Leafs move dollars from the roster now. They will have to trade Brodie out and then ask other team to retain.

Any decent top4 D-man would be easily 6M+ if not already signed for term; and if not signed would be looking to get paid in the summer anyway.

Realistically speaking adding a strong Top4 D at this TDL is next to impossible IMHO

I also do not want to pay for someone with term who is a worse target than someone that can be had as a UFA.

What is the hypothetical AAV?
Its just the talking heads but 4-5M per was on a couple of sources so TJ money.

I didn't really pencil anyone in for lines... if that helps.. I'm happy with him at 3C, and Domi for example at 2C, if that continues to be acceptable. I really think to upgrade 2C, it's going to take when Tavares comes off the books. It's the D, that I'm personally focused on for next year.

Roy is a pending UFA with 3.1 AAV (29 yr old); and possibly looking for retirement contract. I am sure he is going to get money thrown at him as a UFA. The question then becomes even if Leafs were to gamble for this pending UFA what is the ask? We have no 2nd rounders; that means we will have to dip into the futures - this is where I am uneasy to make such calls at this TDL.

I would exercise more caution as there are other holes on the roster; and our net is not really secure to make big deals. We just have 2 more years of Tavares (including this season); and after this season we would require a 2C too (Tavares is dunzo as a 2C AFAIC).

We need some planning and a bit of patience IMO

thats precisely the point! That is why until Tavares is off the cap Leafs have to exercise caution in making any significant deals; as we would by default require other teams to eat cap and that means throwing more assets away or just go for rentals

IMHO Leafs are not the team to go for rentals we need some security in net before we do anything like that i.e. proven tender doesn't have to be vezina caliber but at least putting up decent numbers; meanwhile we can continue to draft well such that when Marner's new deal kicks in and when matthews eventually re-signs; we have cheap ELCs helping out on the roster too.

Need some longterm planning with hockey foresight to have more kick at the Stanley Cup can to hopefully win at least 1 if not more. At least that is my position

Probably not, Calgary'sownership appears to have a grudge against Treliving and the Leafs.

Pittsburgh doesn't have that.

Kyle also doesn't appear to hold grudges.

Davidson literally leaked a blockbuster trade and 4 months later Dubas did a deal with him for Mrazek.
Holding grudges In sports never pays
Ask Harold ballard

If we really are talking to the Capitals on Nick Jensen, thoughts on expanding it to include Nic Dowd as well?

$1.3m, signed for another year, hard to play against C who plays playoff hockey year round?

Thoughts?

I think Larsson is the identity guy for their defense rather than Oleksiak. I don't beleive he is available because I feel they would need to be doing a teardown for that to happen. They were a 46 win and 100pt club last season so I imagine they plan to be back there next season. For this reason I doubt they give a whiff at Oleksiak or Larsson.

Now Borgen might be a different story but this is a club that has an absolute popgun offense so at least one forward needs to be coming back. A first plus Robertson even if they aren't too interested in selling a D. That seems like an overpay unless its not, especially for a player they aren't anxious to trade. A late 1st in a weak year and a player with a nice lower level scoring resume but who probably isn't worth a late 1st himself. Borgen with another year of term at $2.7, he hits, adds a few points, good shot based metrics and just hitting his physical prime. Or maybe they try to get Seattle's 2nd coming back to even it up, or Toronto's own 3rd? Maybe they throw in Steeves because nobody at Coachella is scoring as much as he is and he hasn't been given a real shot yet.

I think a deal might be there if the Leafs believe Borgen is the real thing being only a 17.32 TOI guy as of today.

The question being, who will be available as UFA?

Pesce - skating declining, still very good, but maybe for 2-3 years, allegedly looking for 5-6
Tanev
Myers, Dumba, Montour, Roy, DeMelo, Walker, Carrier, Hakanpaa

They wouldn't help this playoff run, and the question being, who of quality can we sign, for a good contract? July 1st is usually overpayment day.... The nice thing about trading some of the guys who might be available, is there are quite a few $4 mil contracts.

Realistically, how many of the guys listed above, would make effective partners for Rielly, and cost affordable?
I look at that list, and I have to believe quite a few will make it to free agency.

Do something like this and go from there.

I'd probably waive Gregor or include him in the trade to increase flexibility.

Am I misinterpreting this or did Keefe basically just tell Jones he's done through the media?
Why jump to an assumption that he wasn't told in person? Jones knows he's the #3.

Do we get any LTIR relief for injured Giordano?

Only if he's going to be out long enough to be put on LTIR. At this point, nothing has been said, and typically you don't go on LTIR for a concussion, except in rare circumstances.
