Seems pretty clear that Calgary ownership has a issue with Treliving for quitting, only going to trade with us if we overpay.

Apart from Guenztel and Hanafin, it seems like poor crop of trade targets, which is good for the teams buying.

The funny thing is Friedman said the leafs offered a first in their package for Zadorov and Tanev.

Instead Calgary settle on a 2nd, 3rd, 5th and a prospect for the two.

Unreal the length some teams will go.

There’s no way anyone gives up that package for Guentzel…. Right? That price is ridiculous, and so is his ask to re-sign

I'm maintaining my position that unless Toronto is adding a cost controlled, impact player, with term, I'd rather see them keep their 1st round pick, Robertson, Knies, Cowan, Minten, Grebyonkin and Niemela. None of those assets should be available for a rental, or a player who doesn't move the needle.

Therefore, unless a bona-fide, #1 LHD, a first pairing RHD, or a top 5-7 goalie becomes available, I'd much rather see Toronto move depth pieces and mid round picks to add a Schenn caliber RHD with some grit and ability to break the cycle, who can play with Rielly in the playoffs, keeping Brodie / Liljegren and Benoit / McCabe together.

The summer is the right time to add, IMO, unless a "big fish" that Toronto can retain, is available at the deadline.

Dallas may have done well to give up quantity over quality (no 1st round pick or prospect equivalent to that). Of course, there's no guarantee that Tanev is anything more than a rental for them either. Beyond that, we have Calgary continuing to sell and the trade market beginning to move/ramp up in anticipation of the trade deadline.

I think the Leafs needed retention to make that deal work at all and that was the killer.

Here’s Friedman:
“Now, the two teams involved here wouldn’t discuss it, but there was an attempt by the Toronto Maple Leafs to get both Tanev and Zadorov from Calgary. Now, from what I understand is the issue here was that the Maple Leafs and the Flames could not agree on what it would cost for Calgary to keep up to 50% of the salary on both players. I don’t know what the exact percentage was that Toronto asked, but it was up to half, and the two sides couldn’t figure out that compensation in addition to just the compensation for the players. So as a result, Tanev and Zadorov to Toronto didn’t happen. Zadorov goes to the Canucks.
The Maple Leafs do continue to look for defencemen out there. I do think they will continue to pursue Chris Tanev, although because Tanev makes a larger salary than Zadorov if might take longer for the Tanev move to happen, whether to Toronto or someone else.”

You mean he wants more than any of his comparables and plus a full no move? Treliving says hold my beer!

A 1st seems standard for a (the?) top rental and should be the best asset surrendered. That said, enough still depends upon the quality of the prospect. The "plus" likely ends up being the least significant asset in the deal. The acquiring team should essentially be willing and able to re-sign him though after giving up such a haul, yes. That "return" is very much a matter of quantity that may or may not end up being of quality.

Beautiful B.C.
If the devils are throwing in the towel we should inquire about Marino. They have Nemec pretty much ready to take over the role anyways, maybe we could swoop in and grab him to play with Rielly.

Ngl hadn’t thought that Marino would be available but that would be an amazing add short and long term.
