We've got a ton of people suggesting our D core isn't big enough, and ample evidence that we need more physicality on the back end... and somehow a 174 lb D man is a "great fit"??

I'd say there's ample evidence we need another defenseman who can actually move the puck. With Liljegrens inconsistencies this season we have one guy who does that well.

I also said acquiring him wouldn't prevent another addition.

I don't see that we "NEED" a 3C. An upgrade would be nice, but I don't think it's near the top of our NEED list.

The top of the NEED list, should be finding Mo the right partner. Fans tend to want the biggest shiny brand name, like Hanifin, but we have enough big names, and would probably be better off seeking players who can play that physical game required in the playoffs. Someone to stabilize Mo's defensive deficiencies, allowing him to do what he does best. A physical, net clearing D man.

That has to be the priority. It's been that way for years.

Don't get me wrong, I like Tanev... but is a 193lb D man, really the guy we need to protect the area in front of the net? Is that THE guy we should be pursuing with our limited assets?
There are probably better options but I think Tanev gives you the best bang for the buck. What he lacks in weight he makes up in grit IMO.

I'll say it again, Alexandre Carrier seems like a great fit for me. Won't cost the 1st, young enough to be a long-term add if he fits in well. Shouldn't be prohibitively expensive to re-sign. Would immediately become our best RHD. You could still go after an Adam Larsson type as well to really remake our right side.

Carrier is underrated. Yes please.

Carrier would give them more speed and he's a workhorse. He has a lot of defensive zone starts and doing well. He's never been a big time minute logger for Nashville though so there isn't much track record that he'd be able to do that here. He's firmly a mid-pair 18-20min defenseman I think, but could be a good fit next to McCabe.

If the price is fair, I do think he's a good target to acquire and extend.

Listening to Bunkis and not sure who the guest was but they suggested they are better off going after an Oleksiak than a Tanev. Sure and what will that cost you and is he even available?

I absolutely agree that the #1 priority has to be remodelling the back end, and specifically getting harder to play against at the back. I like Larsson/Oleksiak if Seattle sells.

I would really like a 3C like Henrique to shift Domi to the wing, and make the wingers interchangeable based on matchups/who’s hot. If a winger, Yakov Trenin is appealing.

Do we have an interest in bringing Noel Acciari back? DUbas is reportedly listening on all his players outside of the core.

Both Acciari and Lafferty would have been better than keeping Kampf.

Oleksiak is intriguing, making 4.6 for another two years after this one. He used to really good, but I haven't followed his last few seasons closely now that he is in Seattle.

Can he play the right side?

Acciari has been really terrible and injured quite a bit. Currently on the IR.

I wouldn't give them a single decent asset to acquire him, if at all.
Yeah you may be right. The last injury he suffered was a headshot from Dillon so he's currently concussed

Mainly has been LD. His main defensive partners have been Will Borgen and Justin Schultz.

Oleksiak is alright. He's a big guy that doesn't really hit a lot or that hard but he's defensively pretty good. His reach is really good and moves around well. He had an offensive spike last year but likely just an inflated shooting percentage.

Alter says Leafs are better with Brodie playing the left side and need a better partner for Rielly.

I like:

Rielly Tanev
Brodie Lily
Benoit McCabe
Brodie appears to play better on the left side, but one of his main problems is he shy’s away from the physical contact, and I might be wrong but there’s physicality on both sides of the rink…….

Look, I like Crouse. We do not need a Winger right now though.

RD
3C
4th line PK specialist.

I would love Crouse but ius he even available? I dont see why the Coyotes would entertain trading him. He's young enough to be part of their core

Time to go for Crouse was before he extended with Arizona long term, he's a name that pops up here yearly. The organization is a mess and he chose to stay, probably for reasons beyond hockey. Similar to Boone Jenner in CBJ.

The Maple Leafs have their first-round pick in 2024 but do not have a second-rounder until 2027. Friedman reports that the Leafs have offered multiple lower-round draft picks.

"It’s Toronto which I think is offering multiple picks, but none of them a first, and their first second (round draft pick) available isn’t for four years. So that’s a challenge.

"

Dubas would have a statue built for him by now if he was the one approaching Tanev this way :sarcasm:

With just over two weeks remaining before the trade deadline, the Pittsburgh Penguins appear to have set their course as a seller as their playoff hopes fade.

TSN Hockey insider Pierre LeBrun reports Penguins president and general manager Kyle Dubas is open to offers on all players outside of the team's core ahead of March 8.

"Kyle Dubas right now is listening on pretty much everyone on his roster other than his core guys. I hope I underline that part for everyone," LeBrun said on Insider Trading. "But that still leaves a lot of players that he's listening on, and, for example, a player that he's listening on is Reilly Smith, who's not a pending UFA. He's got another year in his deal at $5 million next year, but he's a Cup champion with playoff experience and I know that that may intrigue a few contenders somewhere on their list.

"The Penguins will be in sell mode to some degree between now and March 8."

Dubas' tenure with the Penguins began with an aggressive bid to get the team back in the postseason, acquiring Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks and Smith from the Golden Knights. But Pittsburgh has struggled to stay in the playoff race, currently sitting eight points back of the Detroit Red Wings for the final wild-card spot with two games in hand.

Pittsburgh was dealt a key blow last week when pending unrestricted free agent Jake Guentzel was ruled out for up to four weeks with an upper-body injury. The 29-year-old winger, who has 22 goals and 52 points in 50 games this season, is listed at No. 4 on the TSN Trade Bait board.

There's always a "but" that follows a Dubas lead plan lol.

I'm not even trolling. It's true.

Dubas did A that seemed very excellent, "but"....

I actually proposed we go after Henrique last year near the deadline, given he had another year, and wouldn't just be a rental. It likely would have been the better move than O'Reilly. The challenge of course, is limited currency to spend... you pick up that #1 priority back end piece... what's left of value to trade for a Henrique?

--------------------

These shopping lists, with multiple premier pieces... like Tanev + Crouse... we just don't have the currency to get this done. Or RD + 3C + 4PK... we might have room for RD, and a 4PK.. but we are kind of tapped out here.

Snake-bitten and misused more than terrible I'd say- similar situation to Kampf. Playing as as borderline shutdown C as the best player on the line. If he were healthy he'd be an interesting buylow candidate but we should be nowhere near that concussion.

If they're selling Eller would be a nice fit for a cheap 3C, and Dubas might like one or more of his former mid-tier prospects to make it work without pick capital

Rielly Smith might be the only player of interest if the Leafs want to move on from Bert

Smith could be a valuable top 9 LW addition with cup winning experience and a solid playoff track record

But that does have tougher cap implications next season
