I'd rather not pay the first for a 34 year old UFA who's best trait is the amount of punishment he subjects himself to, especially when their could potentially be so many better UFA options in the summer.

I agree with the rest of your sentiment though, especially knowing how much we will need ELC and 2nd contract players to fill our depth roles.

Sounds like it will be an earlier pick than:

Cowan 28th 2023
Minten 38th 2022
Knies 57th 2021
Robertson 53rd 2019

Our scouts are pretty darn good in that area lately, lets let them pick!
It's not a particularly strong draft this year anyway (or so they say...)

He's not on top of the list by any means but if prices for Tanev and Larrson end up being too high....I can see treliving circling back around to Matt Dumba.

Trev tried to get Dumba back this past off-season when he was an UFA. He's still getting high usage minutes on a bad team and has playoff experience. Not mention a RD
Brodie lily is too soft for playoff hockey
We need two big dmen

Mo big
Brodie bigger
McCabe Benoit
Extras
Gio laggesson etc

Dumba is BAD. Obtaining him, would almost be as useful as obtaining Klingberg was.

---

We have McCabe and Benoit as two bigger, physical guys... I agree that's who should be with Mo, but we don't need a team of all big guys.

Leafs Home Board
No rentals or short term solutions… team has been too inconsistent this season to spend assets on for a chance run.

This season is a good opportunity for the youngsters like Holmberg, Robertson, and McMann (to an extent) can do up front.

I’d probably only invest on the defense for but for multiple years, no rentals.

And if Saros is available I’m still strongly interested, price pending. An elite goalie can cover up an imperfectblue line.
Agreed

"Play the Kids" and try and rebuild the prospect pool after years of abuse on rental players.

Only a top 4 Dman with term would be on my list also.

Leafs have little to no cap space this year and next year when Leafs add another $11 mil player in Nylander the situation cap wise will be even worse.

Ride it out with what you have unless you can make a real hockey trade.

We're not going to be able to unload Bertuzzi until the off-season. And then, unless he becomes a playoff GOD, shoot him into the sun. $5.5 million is a lot of cap space.

Saying things like "he's a shell of his former self" and "he may not have any game left" is excessive. He's still only 29yrs old

He's not having a good season by any means but that depends on heavily on the team he plays for too.

And yes any trade for Dumba would need salary retention, I thought that was implied. I just thinki he screams "change of scenery" player and could be had for cheap
It depends what they think they are getting with him. Coming in he had a unusual tool kit where he had a big shot and some offense, could throw a big hit and would fight. He was never great at defending but the other stuff made it work. Now his offense has been declining since 18-19 so that isn't really a thing anymore. He was bad last season too on a 46 win Minny club so it isn't just the Yotes. He has played the game hard for a guy with a small frame so his body is an "old 29".

For arguments sake, are you thinking he would be the only add on D?

For reference sake, here is where I see the team next year, as potential roster players. Don't get worked up about lines, I just put together a roster, with no intent on creating lines at all.

This is 23 bodies already. Our needs will be a second goalie, two top 4 D, and perhaps another 2/3 C... 4 bodies listed here, will be moved out, or Marlies bound. I see approximately $15-17 million in cap space available, to sign these four bodies, depending on who we move on from.

I'm not sure I'd even go for a top 4, unless it is a top 4 who can play 1st. pairing.

At worst a number 3, someone who can play beside Rielly or someone who can run the 2nd. pair.

It sort of sounds like Treliving is adopting the following:
  • Trade our 1st rounder if it means acquiring a legit top 4 defenseman with term (unlikely, hard to do, realistically who other than Hanifin is even available?)
  • Acquire a depth defenseman for secondary assets i.e. Tanev for multiple mid round picks and B prospects (much more likely)
I think this is the play as well. 3 5ths this year. 2 7ths this year. 2 5ths next year. Guys like Hirvonen or Moldenhauer. Those assets are there. But I don't think they will land Tanev. In the end they may help acquire someone who was worth a 3rd on the market and instead Tre ponies up 2 5ths instead or something like that.

Look at the size of the defense of the last cup winners
Tampa huge defense
Las Vegas really huge defense
You need the big men to absorb the hits and stop the other team getting to the net

Looking at that my plan would be an experienced backup for a couple of million

Big game hunting for a partner for Rielly in UFA, Roy would be my target at around five and a half to six million

Depending on how the rest of the season goes bring back Brodie for three million, I've liked him on the left

Bring back Domi for three Million
Then sign Wennberg to four and a half million so I can shunt Tavares to the wing

Now I try to make room for all this by moving Reeves and Kampf

Need to finally find a balance of puck movers and some bigger physical D who can stop a cycle.

Can't go too overboard one way or the other.

This is give or take where I'm at. We could probably move Timmins' 1.1m to open up even more space. Shedding Kampf and Reaves should be a priority.

Haven't watched enough of Roy to know if he's worth upwards of 6m, but yes absolutely have to find a long term partner for Rielly. For another million or so I would swap Tanev for Brodie, allows McCabe to play his strong side. Benoit/Liljegren would be a great 3rd pair.

Treliving has to address as many holes as he can this off-season with cap space as opposed to moving more assets next year mid season. Some quality players are going to get squeezed this summer once again, some interesting names will shake free and bet on themselves on one year deals.

Gudbranson would be a good add if Columbus retains some money.

It would essentially be the Luke Schenn add from last year. Rielly pairs really well with simple players like Gudbranson, Schenn, Lyubushkin, etc.
