Only problem I can see, is that if Merz is exempt, don't we still have to expose at least one goalie with a minimum of games played? I can't remember what the exact number is from last expansion, but there is a minimum of nhl games played required to be exposed, different numbers for players and goalies. Anyone have that info? Hutch is signed through next year could we expose him?
Yes :thumbu:

What would Ullmark cost exactly? I know the sabres are selling but why move one of the only players working on that shit team for nothing?

To either gain an asset from a player who doesn't plan on resigning with them, or gain an asset to a player who does plan on resigning with them, but can be rented out for the duration of the season.

I would think you could pickup Hall and Ullmark, each 50% withheld, for two 2nds. and Andersen. It ends up cap neutral. I'd hope to resign Ullmark, as I think a tandem of Ullmark and Campbell would be quite capable.

I can't imagine it would be much. He's a pending UFA, and doesn't have the reputation Lehner had last year. Maybe a 3rd or 4th?

I think the Sabres would have a hard time pulling a 2nd like Lehner did.

Yeah, that seems to be the likely cost based on a few past comparisons. Or a 3rd and a B/C prospect
Lehner seemed like a bit of a robbery by Vegas don't you think? But yea he should fetch less than Lehner but I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a similar return; can't see him getting any more though; a 2nd seems fair.

A 2nd seems high for Ullmark, maybe a 1st+something for Hall 50% retained and Ullmark?

Goalie value is typically low, especially for pending UFA's. The last goalie to go for a 1st was Freddy with a 5 year contract extension in place.

It's a buyers market as well.

1st, Kerfoot, any prospect not named Robertson, Sandin, or Liljegren, for Hall and Ullmark 50% retained each. That’s the most I’d offer in a package for those two.

My concern with Ullmark is that he's a UFA who obviously isn't going to re-sign in Buffalo and will be available in a few months. A second is only worth it if he re-signs with us.

Expansion complicates any addition to the team with term.

If Andersen's health remains suspect Im fine if the team pays a 2nd to not have Hutch be the main backup for the playoffs

I am of the opinion, that Ullmark is a superior goalie to Andersen at this point. I'd pay the price to make the upgrade anyway. We've got a lot invested in the rest of the squad, why stick with a goalie who's health is questionable, and his past performances when it matters most, also questionable?

Im thinking that is the possibility if Freddie goes on IR.

my hope is Laughton/ulmark/depth D but we will see

We're of the same mind.

Merrill or Hutton being my primary choices for the depth D.

Dermott had less than 8 minutes last night. We're an injury away from being really tested at defense. It's an area of concern.

Kerfoot may need to go out to accommodate all this.

Why not a 6th round pick for Hakanpaa? Ok defender, huge, hits like crazy, pending UFA, and $750,000 can be buried on the taxi squad, until needed, without moving anyone out? If not him, any player near league minimum, and you don't need to worry about their contract.. as long as they are an upgrade on Marincin/Rosen/Sandin etc..

This, I would consider decent asset management (with hopes of re-signing Ullmark) while simultaneously giving us a potential deadline bump.

If Hall could catch fire for a few weeks on line 1 and Gally keeps up the hard work on line 2, we can then bump Hyman to line 3 and the whole thing becomes a lot more dangerous.

I like Hutton/Merrill more. Believe Hutton had some strong pk metrics last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs just use some nothing prospects to acquire their depth guys. Probably one for a forward (Amadio, Bishop, etc.) and one for a defenseman (Hakanpaa, Rafferty, etc.). I would not be surprised to see the Leafs wanting to keep their picks and start using some guys that may be buried (i.e. Rubins and Duszak) instead.

Without LTIR or moving anyone out the Leafs could actually get Ullmark & even another cheap rental forward if they had them both retained twice to 25% of their initial pro-rated cap hit; but it'd likely be a costly & difficult thing to pull off. Think they'd also want to avoid sending down Galchenyuk if possible, and soon enough they won't even be able to do that without waiving him once he reaches 10 games with the Leafs.

If we're getting a goalie of that calibre it's because Andersen is done,
If Andersen is done he'll be the cap dump as he's only owed 300k cash.

That would be a much easier way to go about it (and one that I'd prefer) but the Leafs may still go after Ullmark (or another NHL goalie) knowing Andersen might be back for playoffs. I'm not saying I agree with it but it's a possibility if Dubas wants to hold on to Andersen, but still wants an NHL goalie in the case both Campbell & Andersen aren't healthy.

Edit: you're probably right regarding the caliber of goalie coming in, Ullmark is more than a stop-gap; he's a pretty solid starter.

If Andersen is done, then he can just go on LTIR. I think if he returns at any point this year, he is going to be kept unless another team really wants him.

Depends on
A- how close we can get to the cap on an off day without losing anyone to waivers
B- how much we value the difference in what we could get on LTIR vs. full cap relief.
