Depends on
A- how close we can get to the cap on an off day without losing anyone to waivers
B- how much we value the difference in what we could get on LTIR vs. full cap relief.
Cap aside, I think for morale they'd rather keep him than not, even if he doesn't play another game for them. He is close with the team, especially Matthews. Just another factor.

To either gain an asset from a player who doesn't plan on resigning with them, or gain an asset to a player who does plan on resigning with them, but can be rented out for the duration of the season.

I would think you could pickup Hall and Ullmark, each 50% withheld, for two 2nds. and Andersen. It ends up cap neutral. I'd hope to resign Ullmark, as I think a tandem of Ullmark and Campbell would be quite capable.

I like the idea of going after both, but I think it makes the most sense if Freddie is done for the year (or at least through the regular season+), you know roughly what Ullmark wants contract wise, Leafs take back a contract they can bury to balance the cash cost, and probably add a good prospect.
  • Buffalo retains 5.3m, but because Freddie can be LTIRd they can take off his 5m.
  • Leafs can take back a guy who makes good AHL cash as well, like Davidson (287.5k), Dea (700k), Irwin (700k) to make it so from a cash perspective Buffalo doesn't actually pay out any extra cash.
  • Leafs send back someone who has potential, like a SDA/Hallander/Kokkonen

Not to mention Buffalo saves real dollars on Anderson. He is only owed about 350K left of his 5 million.

Ullmark about 960k in real cash.

Don’t under estimate the value of this.

I kinda would keep Freddy if it's for the rest of season and he's ready for Playoffs, cause if we add Ullmark that would make 3 Goalies that have had some sort of injury this year; Hutch looks like an iron-man ;)

Well - I am of the belief that trading Freddy is the key to unlocking cap space and allowing us to load up.

It’s not going to solely be retention that gets us space to add players. I don’t believe Kerfoot moves until summer.

It's still a bit of a vague answer, but also not entirely surprising.

Making a goalie trade under pandemic rules is a tricky thing and management may feel Andersen would be fine as a 1B.

Going to be an interesting time until we finally hit the tdl

I dont think they have the cap space to carry 3 goaltenders if Andersen is healthy and trying to squeak one through waivers would be impossible I think...

Think the Leafs should just trade for their rental forward, (maybe a waiver exempt buried cap hit D for depth) and if sometime between now and the deadline their goalie situation goes south then get creative to bring another guy in (either by moving Andersen for cap space or Kerfoot out for goalie + Kerfoot replacement; I mentioned Rittich + Bennett as a possibility).

They would if it were say Ullmark + Laughton/Iafallo both retained twice to 25% of their initial pro-rated cap hit; although that's about as tight as it can possibly get (without sending down Galchenyuk) & very hard to pull off such.

I think, but I'm not certain, if Andersen were to LTIR for the balance of the season, that we could then carry three goaltenders in the playoffs. Certainly not for most of the regular season... though I'd need a sliding calculator, as to when we could bring him back.

Wonder if they don’t wanna show their cards too much re: Freddie. If it is the groin, that thing lingers. If they’re trying to trade for a goalie, you may not want the opposite side knowing the extent of the damage

Plus Andersen too I think.

:sarcasm:

Come on now... leafs may yet make a trade but you likely haven't seen the last of Andy yet. I still have to believe he's back and ready to go come playoff time. Its an unpopular thing to say I realize but unless a fairly big trade materializes... its Andy and Campbell.

Thing is in the playoffs if Andy plays and sucks... Campbell will be put in. After how he's played that has to be what happens. If not then its on the coach.

Lebrun said on insider trading after Florida signed Knight, there is now a possibility they trade Dreidger. Another option for us if we trade for a goalie

if Campbell walks into the postseason with over a 920 SVP then I firmly believe Andy will see the playoffs from the bench.

Please get a good goalie

I've never been mad at Dubas. But if we find ourselves playing Hutch in the playoffs because Dubas did nothing to improve our goalie situation, I would be very very upset with Dubas.

Samesies. I wouldn’t be too happy having to see Freddy playing in the post season either. Campbell and somebody else and I’d be more confident.

Watching the Habs game and during the first intermission LeBrun said the Leafs are comfortable with their situation and aren’t making it a priority to find another goalie.
