The team has really shown a commitment to defense and compete hard every game. It's time for Dubas to reward them by making a trade
Gusev had 44 points in 66 games last year.
Although it's a high cap hit for this season's production, he might have some value to a team as a pending UFA. I guess the question is if that is through a waiver claim or a trade (either with retention or by sending some cap back to NJ)?
Here's a good scenario: say that Andersen's diagnosis from his appointment comes back and allows the Leafs to place him on LTIR; the Leafs then trade for Foligno (50% retained) & Elvis Merzilkins (11% retained to 3.56m). The Leafs then have a very good tandem between Campbell & Merzilkins for a combined cap hit of 5.21m for this season and the next. Merzilkins is expansion draft exempt (he's a 2nd year player) so the Leafs can still protect Campbell in the expansion draft.
If they retained Merzilkins even more or got a 2nd team to retain on Foligno they could even add another player as well (e.x. 50% retained Oleksiak).
Trading Andersen would be even better. If Andersen is rested the next week we should be fine. He has been trying to play through an injury and as long as Campbell and Hutch can hold the fort down for the next week we should be perfectly fine. Resting Andersen is the best thing for the Leafs right now.
If he clears waivers and NJD is willing to retain... I think the Leafs will have a lot of interest. I don't think the Leafs will have interest in claiming him for the full cap hit though.
He was a better finisher last year, and that ability has disappeared. He is also a weak skater and might be the worst defensive player in the NHLI don't know much about Gusev, but his stats (not including this year) are very impressive. Can anybody give a description on his play?

Only problem I can see, is that if Merz is exempt, don't we still have to expose at least one goalie with a minimum of games played? I can't remember what the exact number is from last expansion, but there is a minimum of nhl games played required to be exposed, different numbers for players and goalies. Anyone have that info? Hutch is signed through next year could we expose him?
We could expose Hutch, yes. That was one of the explanations for signing him, plus to be the #4 guy as insurance.
Oh. Okay. LOL. Nevermind Gusev then.He was a better finisher last year, and that ability has disappeared. He is also a weak skater and might be the worst defensive player in the NHL
We absolutely need to add a goalie regardless of Freddy's status.Good to see Ullmark is on their radar.
Hate to ask, but any chance this is April Fools?
Just asking because that account has been beating the "get a new goalie" drum
You could get him for a 2nd.What would Ullmark cost exactly? I know the sabres are selling but why move one of the only players working on that shit team for nothing?
I can't imagine it would be much. He's a pending UFA, and doesn't have the reputation Lehner had last year. Maybe a 3rd or 4th?What would Ullmark cost exactly? I know the sabres are selling but why move one of the only players working on that shit team for nothing?
