Re the Kerfoot debate in here. I'm of the view that i think Dubas could get creative with that money in free agency BUT it would be harder to replicate that many suggest.

Fact is he's a multi role guy, who can slide up and down the lineup. And while it's true it's not particularly spectacular in many of those roles, those guys don't exactly grow on trees...

There’s no reason you need a single guy to fill all those roles in nothing more than a mediocre fashion.

Having a handful of good AHL call-ups can serve the same purpose.

At the same time you're coming in out of position, often into a situation where you have a Barrie/McDavid picking up speed through the neutral zone after a clear.

You can ignore the stats, I like what I see him do out there. He intercepts a lot of pucks and moves it quickly, I don't see him stick out in a negative way often if at all.

If that’s worth 3.5 million bucks, I should have been more persistent with my hockey dreams!

3.5 million for “he doesn’t stand out as bad”...

I get the Penguins wanted Kappy and overpaid, but Kappy at virtually the same cap hit was the one we should have kept instead of Kerfoot.

Unless we can find a good quality 3rd line center making less money to replace him I'd stick with Kerfoot

I think Kerfoot is pretty meh but his positional flexibility is extremely useful when your turning over the bottom 6 every year

I'm not ignoring stats, I'm using them in conjunction with reality. Starting a PK in the defensive zone is objectively more difficult deployment and it would be farcical to suggest otherwise. Spezza winning 59% of his PK draws vs Kerfoot winning 35% makes a greater impact than anything either of them could be or are doing individually. And it's reflected in Spezza giving up goals half as often on the PK.

I'm genuinely curious if he may have Seattle's eye.

They hired a bunch of pretty sharp analytics folks. Some of his underlying numbers may catch their attention

Sorry I should have been clear, I agree that 2nd unit PK results in different stats than 1st unit, and I don't know of a good way to adjust them for comparisons sake. This is a situation where you can ignore the numbers and the eye test makes sense to be weighed more than usual. I like what I see from him on the PK.

All good. I could've been less combative with my reply. Hopefully we can beat the Jets in regulation tonight. :thumbu:

His defensive numbers are surprisingly good

My first reaction is they take one of Holl or Dermott but they are going to be swimming in #4D types and somebody like Kerfoot who can play in a top 6 may have more value to them from a team building standpoint

I can construct a very good D from the mock protection lists. Dermott isn't even in my top 6 D.
Getting a player like Kerfoot is MUCH more difficult.

Keefe said Andersen has an appointment with a specialist tomorrow to diagnose his “injury” ... my prediction is he will end up on Robidas Island and the leafs will have the cap-space to trade for a goalie like Kuemper or Bernier

Kap had more enticing tools for other teams. He has elite speed and a good snap shot. Kerfoot Is not going to land you a high 1st plus a B prospect.

I honestly don't mind having moved on from Kap. He didnt use his linemates enough and would kind of kill possession because he had tunnel vision and just throw everything at the net even if it was a low percentage shot.

Still wishing on a Jamie Oleksiak to slot in over Dermott.
Not a huge Oleksiak fan but he's a sasquatch on skates who can actually skate okay and he's not a terrible Dman who could definitely play in our lineup over Dermott just for his size and presence, what would it take?

Yes or 2nd + 4th either way I'd do it. No one pushes him around either - he's a very solid player. What a beastly pairing that would be too Oleksiak - Bogo

They would get ravaged by faster guys, but sure...

They also would be playing 14 minutes a night still. 2nd + 4th seems pricey for a guy who is not going to play often.

If that's our all-in play then I really don't mind it. We are going to get eaten by the more physical teams anyway. Oleksiak is extremely mobile for a big guy, perhaps even comparable to Dermott. To me the other things he brings makes him a not-insignificant upgrade. Not that I am dying to walk away from Dermott, but

Heyyyyyy guys KERFOOT just scored a shorty!! Haha
