For all the heat Dubas has been taking for "lack of moves", somewhat disjointed roster, and the Leafs recent slide -- I think you do have to give him some overall credit. This is still a really good team, with a REALLY good prospect system.

I'm hesitant to "rank" the Leafs prospect pool, but I don't believe either the HockeyNews, or BleacherReport, who ranked them 15th and 19th overall, did the Leafs system justice.

https://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-farm-system-rankings/
NHL Farm System Rankings: Which Team Has the Best Group of Prospects?

This is a pool that has:
- A 19 year old who scored 55 goals in the OHL last year.
- 21 and 20 year old former 1st round pick defencemen with a taste of NHL experience (Sandin & Liljegren)
- A recent 15th OA pick in Rodion Amirov
- A recent 3rd round pick who just won best defenceman at the WJCs (Topi Niemla)
- Their own 1st and 2nd round picks this year

Of course, none of these assets are Quinton Byfield, Alex Turcotte or Lucas Raymond... but as far as players outside of NHL rosters, there aren't many who are CLEARLY a step above those Leafs assets.... and even fewer who are on contending teams / potentially available.

Obviously, there are cap issues that will limit Dubas' flexibility... but the reality is, they can certainly afford to lose a couple of high-end pieces for the right player.... especially if they can get somebody who might be able to alleviate a cap issue for them beyond this year.

Given the age of our roster and our go forward needs , i'm pretty damn happy with our prospect pool,,with 1 exception

and that is tending ,do we have a player in any of our Goalie prospects? By the looks and sounds of it,,the answer is no

2nd, Kerfoot for Ullmark and Hall (50% retained)
4th for Merrill

I think this works out cap wise...

Kerfoot, 1st round pick, and a non-top-4 prospect to New Jersey for Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri both 50% retained.

4th round pick to Detroit for John Merrill.

Zach Hyman - Auston Matthews - William Nylander
Kyle Palmieri - John Tavares - Mitch Marner
Ilya Mikheyev - Travis Zajac - Wayne Simmonds
Joe Thornton - Pierre Engvall - Jason Spezza

Morgan Rielly - TJ Brodie
Jake Muzzin - Justin Holl
John Merrill - Zach Bogosian

Expansion draft... Pierre Engvall, Travis Dermott, and Michael Hutchinson get exposed.

neither of those teams are making those trades with us

We need a new goalie. If both are hurt there is no point in going the playoffs with hutch as the only healthy goalie

Two years ago I was probably more confident in our goalie prospects than I had been since Rask/Pogge. Ian Scott was coming off his CHL goalie of the year award, and Woll had played pretty well in the NCAA, especially in his last year on a bad team, and had been a somewhat high goalie pick to begin with (first pick of the 3rd round).

But goalies are hard to predict, and Scott obviously got injured and hasn't played since, and Woll's first AHL season wasn't good (especially because it was a pretty good Marlies team playing in front of him).

The Leafs have been abysmal at goalie drafting and development. Reimer is the only NHL goalie we've produced in 25 years with more than like ~125 NHL games. Rask doesn't count because he never entered our development system and never played for us. I certainly miss the days of having a guy like Cujo in net, as it makes such a massive difference in the playoffs when you have a goalie actively stealing games for you on a semi-regular basis. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I certainly hope Dubas & co have been looking into it (though with goalie development timelines, it would take many many years to determine if any changes in our goalie scouting/development were even successful).

Kadri has averaged about 10 more 5 on 5 points per 82 since the trade, but Kerfoot has been so much better defensively that it eliminates that advantage.
Kadri has been in JTs role

Going head to head against their best Cs and lines and trying to drive his line

Kerfoot ,sheltered like crazy, asked to drive nothing,,prime hiding spots playing wing for the big 4,,,,juiced stats and as gritty as a :tinker:

Now that soup is not starting tonight due to injury,,it is 1000% clear

the main TD target has GOT TO BE a tender, full and utter stop

folks have dreams of thickening our final 4 roster

with this tending? there might not be a series 2 , let alone final 4

That is correct -- but from a trade perspective, it also isn't really relevant. Prospect goalies are rarely if ever traded for value... they're just too difficult to predict.

He's not missing the start because of he's injured. They're not starting him as a precaution as he just came back,

Regardless, I agree I'd love to see another goalie added. Driedger or Ullmark.

I'm not sure, I'd ask why people keep trying to compare Kerfoot to Kadri; only 1 player I was talking about until Kadri was brought into it... seems like a sensitive topic  (because deep down we all know we lost that trade, and Kadri left on a very sour note based on those 2 Boston series)

Except it wasn't based on those two Boston Series. It was based upon a LONG history of issues with the team, management/coach run-ins, internal suspension, Shanahan saying publicly to the media he needed maturity, and so on. This was an issue since he joined the Marlies.

Utter horse sht

We are playing EDM ,,this is a true true 4 point game,,they are only 3 back

Either Keefe is having a Babcock moment or soup ain't even at 85% health

Don't think the goalie situation should affect their rental forward search; worst case if Campbell & Andersen are not 100% healthy by TDL they'll need to dump Andersen & trade for another viable goalie with that cap space... maybe even add a F or D as well if they really wanted to because they'd have the space.

You can’t trade to get an established starter now. They have neither the cap space or the players to make it happen. You have to hope the patchwork backup gallery can eak out a few more wins until Soup or Andersen are 100%. They already traded for Double V

I don't think it should affect who they go after for a rental, but say that player can be acquired without retention (e.x. Scott Laughton, Alex Iafallo, Jamie Oleksiak; all low cap hits), they should retain just in case (as insurance) they need to squeeze in a goalie of low cap hit.

Dubas has time for the goalie situation and he should use that time to make the best decisions before deadline, without affecting his rental F/D talks; worst case maybe he decides he needs to unload Andersen or LTIR becomes possible late, and he pays up for a goalie using that cap space.

Sending Freddie the other way would take care of the cap issue. And typically goalies aren't that expensive in trade, especially given that there are a few goalies on the market right now (Carolina, Columbus, Buffalo all shopping goalies, with Kuemper likely very gettable as well, assuming he's almost healthy).
