Cap wouldn't work for Toronto on the original one unfortunately unless Toronto made additional moves.

Nylander + Robertson + Brodie for Larsson + Wright + Bjork/Burakovsky seem to work fine for me in Capfriendly.... Bjork/Burak are only 100k apart.... I've got a 22 man roster with $350k remaining with a Bjork trade.

Apologies, I thought it was like Nylander for Wright, Bjorkstrand and Larsson.

In mine, I did Nylander and Timmins and it didn't work but if Brodie is in it then I can see the money working but are we really upgrading?

Are we upgrading... Nylander for Bjork is a downgrade... and not a small one.

Brodie for Larsson... Is it better... I don't know. I think it's a change.. Larsson's defense is probably close to Brodie... Brodie is far better than most give him credit... but Larsson is much more physical, and I think we could use some of that.. I think Larsson pairs better with Mo as well.

Wright becomes the wildcard. If he reaches #2C eventually, we end up being better LT. It's a bit of a question if he reaches that, and it's not happening overnight. I take the gamble on the trade, but I'm not one of those who sees a guy who was in the conversation for 1st overall. If Wright becomes a useful NHL player this year... I think it's a draw for this year.

I do that trade every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Agree entirely on Larsson vs Brodie, and Wright being a wildcard

Nylander to Bjorkstrand downgrade- yes it exists. Bjork is IMO a fairly underrated player, that would be good for 30/30 in our top 6, maybe flirt with 70 points... in one his 3 years under contract at 5.4. He's not as good of hockey player as William Nylander, but he's arguably a better fit as a 2RW behind Mitch Marner, and also arguably better bang for the buck than a re-signed Nylander. Cap wise it makes tonnes of sense, and we get compensated for the downgrade with futures (Wright or otherwise).

On ice toss up aside, we also come out ahead huge cap wide on Brodie for Larsson, extra year at a mil less.

A lot of shine came off Wright...he's a nice kid and we don't need more of them.

In theory, could you liquidate Nylander for a 1st+prospect?

Rumor is you can get Garland for free but teams have asked for assets to come with him, say you got Garland for free. It's a downgrade from Nylander but you might get 18-25 goals.

Calgary should suck, maybe we can get a retained Tanev for a 1st+Timmins?

Rielly-Tanev
McCabe-Brodie
Gio-Liljegren
Klingberg

I have too much time to think at work apparently lol, I think 1 trade is coming to make the team cap compliant but let's see.

No matter who they add, Klingberg is not going to be the 7.

So…

We either deal Nylander now as a UFA rental and try to obtain as much as we can…

Or

We deal Nylander with an extension to a team (that can afford him and is willing to meet his demands) that he is willing to play with and try and get a boatload of assets

Or

Use him as our own rental and risk losing him for nothing next offseason.

0. We try to resign him. At the same time.

1. We look to deal Nylander with an extension to a team (that can afford him and is willing to meet his demands) that he is willing to play with and try and get a boatload of assets (see PLD to LA deal)

3. We use him as our own rental and risk losing him for nothing next offseason (see Johnny Hockey)

He made 7M last year and was at times the #7 / scratch

He played 67 games last year. He also played 4 in the playoffs in which he went point-per-game.

NHL.com also lists injury related absences on November 25th (lower body), January 24th (illness), February 12th (illness), February 21st (lower body), March 1st (trade related reasons), March 23rd (upper body), and April 17th (lower body). Unfortunately it does not list how many games missed each time.

He will not be the 7th D on the Leafs. He will get fed offensive zone time and likely placed with a defensively strong partner.

You know he was scratched by both Anaheim and Minny right?

I think Klingberg has a good chance of rebounding. He went from being a high profile guy in Dallas, thinking he'll get secured to a long term deal and remain a franchise building block to losing out on a long term deal... going to Anaheim and being completely side tracked from there.

He's not nearly the all round defensive player Hampus Lindholm is, but remember how he looked pretty cooked in Anaheim in 2022 and then resurfaced in Boston as a reborn defensive stud? I don't think we'll get that out of Klingberg but maybe the regress to the norm type season on a competitive team.

I just don't think our team works out well with 2 big liabilities back there. Rielly steps it up for the playoffs but we saw Rielly + Barrie on the same roster and it was so-so.

I'd love to be wrong.

I definitely wouldn't put them together. But I do like Klingberg's wingspan, ability to walk the line and shot selection as a different look on the PP.

I'd like for us to break up the big 4 on the PP and try to run 2 units differently although I know the trend is to stack the main unit.

Marner on the half wall, Matthews far side sniper, Klingberg as the alternate shot from the point. A rotation of Tavares, Bertuzzi and Knies in a net front position? Mix and match as required.

I agree I think split makes the most sense.

Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares split evenly between the units. Bertuzzi/Domi split. Klingberg/Rielly split. And give the last spot on each unit to a young gun, Knies/Robertson

I've been wondering a couple things about our PP.

Why is Marner always at the half wall when we have three 40g shooters - potentially four now. Wouldn't a Matty/Willie half wall combo, with Kling now at the point not be the most difficult set up to defend?

Why does Matty spend so much time at the point? I haven't seen a heat map but don't remember too many hits from the point, but saw him take plenty shots from there last year.

I may be out of my depths here but having Matty slide into bumper at times to magically find and launch loose pucks in the danger zone might be something.

I think you front load the PP as always because the 1st PP is often 90 seconds leaving a short PP (or no PP) for the 2nd unit. And if you're disciplined with being even with the split then you're literally taking PP time away from Matthews and Nylander who are the team's trigger men.

As for the Klingberg/Rielly question, you try Klingberg ahead of Rielly to see if it's an improvement. Rielly has his long term deal now, you aren't taking money from him with the natural drop in offensive production that comes with losing his 1st PP status. Personally I don't think Klingberg will be an improvement as he operates in the same PP ice that Marner operates in. Klingberg either has to play his off-point on the left side or Marner has to change where he's been very comfortable to many seasons. That doesn't seem to work. I think in the end Klingberg's offensive contributions will be largely even strength.

Think Leafs may still need someone who's more of a 3rd liner than a 4th. Obviously would need to be a pretty limited contract which may play against them.

PTOs potential: Tatar, Heninen, Puljujärvi, Shaw.

Ethan Bear is an interesting name still out there for defense but we are backlogged a bit with Timmins there and new signing Benoit.

Tatar will get a contract from someone. No chance he's a PTO add.
