Haha, yes, I agree, getting rid of Keefe would definitely help.
I don’t know much about Peeke. His +/- worries me though, but maybe playing on a better team would change that. Do you think he’s a top 4 dman?
I can’t imagine Brodie having fallen off a cliff like he did the latter part of last season and through the playoffs (thanks, Keefe). Him playing on the 3rd pair would be a good move, for sure, and would indeed be a steadying influence for Liljegren and Timmins.

I know a lot of people have mentioned trading Brodie but I wonder if there is a strong possibility of him re-signing at a lower cap hit for the next 2-3 years.
I don't see how trading Brodie makes this team better, outside of his caphit either. It would make more sense moving on from guys like Jarnkrok and Lafferty. Give some younger, cheaper bottom 6 prospects a chance.
The only way trading Brodie makes sense is if you can get back a younger, cheaper version of him.

The timing to trade Brodie was at the draft to recoup some picks, and then turning around and either trading for an alternative or signing a free agent. That time passed a long time ago.
Brodie is really good anyway. I do hope they can re-signing to a decent deal to stay in as he likes moves into retirement in a few years.

Why would Chicago trade a 1st round pick, their top non-Bedard prospect and their 2 best roster assets for 2 rentals?

Yea Nylander as a 1 year rental gets 1st + mid pick
As a signed long term deal gets a 1st + B+ prospect + mid pick
korchinski is blue chip and too high an asset
The Hawks arent making the playoffs so they wont risk pick 6th to 15t either
Murphy has more value than Brodie as well and hes not a toss in that they give up for nothing
Getting Hall also shows this trade really only works for us as we trade Nylander and get back a guy who can play a similar role for a year to him
Hawks likely deal Hall for best package at TD but it will be futures based
Korchinski + 1st for another 2 years Id say are untouchable
Murphy we could acquire if the Hawks put him on the table but it would cost a 1st which I dont think I want to deal
I have to be honest I hate seeing how much Brodie’s name is being thrown into trade proposals. I couldn’t help but notice that in most of the games we played without him last season our defensive structure was horrendous. We still had a winning record without him though, but we played much differently. He’s such a stabilizing force back there and one of the reasons our defence has improved so much that past few years in my opinion. I’m convinced he was nursing an injury at the end of the season and in the playoffs. He was held out mysteriously multiple times in the tail end of the season with unexplained ailments. I’d like to believe that is why he didn’t look great in the playoffs.

Also, he played very well in the Tampa series. He was matched up against their top line

He definitely looked injured and offense does die on his stick but he was still our 3rd best defender last playoffs.

Mid-August trade proposals:
Trade 1: Nylander to VAN for Garland, Hoglander
Leafs pick up cap certainty for at least 2 seasons. They lose out on talent but will be better off with Garland making half of Nylander's AAV for the 2 seasons following this season. Leafs also pick up a young roster player which they need more of in Hoglander. Vancouver has shown a willingness to sign high-end players well into their 30s for big AAV (Miller) so they in theory would be more likely to give Nylander a 10Mx8 contract. They are also trying to re-sign Pettersson and adding a high-end winger might make that easier for them. The return is light but I don't really know if Nylander has significant value with his contract demands. The Leafs then pivot and re-sign Bertuzzi to a more reasonable cap hit (assuming he performs well).
Trade 2: Brodie to WPG for Demelo
Leafs pick up a RHD who is also a pending UFA. Winnipeg gets the better player but picks up 2M on the cap for this year. The only snag is if Winnipeg is on Brodie's 10 team NTC. Demelo fills the role next to Rielly for cheaper.
Trade 3: Lafferty to EDM for Foegele
Leafs add salary and the better player - the reverse of the Brodie deal. Foegele was legitimately good last year and can anchor a shutdown line for the Leafs alongside Kampf. Edmonton needs to shed cap to fit in Bouchard for this season - they shed 1.6M in cap to push them to 5M in cap space.
Between the 3 trades the Leafs add shed 1.3M in salary while gaining an additional roster player. The Leafs also lose 3 pending UFA's and gain 2 players with term.
The above team projects as the best team in the league. Nylander's projected 3M raise can now be split between Bertuzzi and Samsonov (performance dependent). Foegele can probably be re-signed for around the same cap hit if not less. Reaves is an extra in this scenario.

Garland is (heavily) rumored to be available for free, teams are asking Vancouver to attach an asset to him to move him.
Hoglander isn't that special.
You could trade off Nylander for much more in a separate deal and just scoop up Garland afterwards.
It needs to be a high end return for Nylander, this return is mediocre at best.
You have to be kidding.
Won't even attempt to avenge a 20 year rookie getting essentially choke slammed. And that's just one of the latest examples.
Dont bother it will always be something about time in the game, current score, which way momentum was swinging, the refs the refs, dont risk taking penalty, leaving guys out of position, the refs, gameplan etc

I mean, at worst you're looking at a prospect + 1st as a rental at the TDL if you wanted to stretch it out.
Garland even at his most is gonna cost us like a 4th round pick, they really seem to want to distance themselves from that contract / player.
You could achieve both things.
I don't see how Nylander returns less than Timo Meier.

Nylander wont get close to Meier signed or unsigned
Meier player profile is more heavily coveted and he was an RFA at the end of the year.
Nylander signed should bring a 1st + B+ prospect + another asset
