1.5m retained. 10m cap hit. Pittsburgh also dumped a bunch of garbage.

Pens are my #2 team. Thrilled see Granlund and Petry dumped. I think they need to address bottom pairing D and backup goaltending, maybe another third line forward, but roster looks good otherwise

Penguins are a geriatric hospital.

I like that they doubled down on that, but that team is a mess.
Oddly enough not really - the cap flexibility is there for yearly reloads until their core is done - i think they have like 48 million when crosby expires and signs his retirement 8.7

Their top six is obviously good, botyom six is quicker.. top 2 d elite middle d decently underrated and they can play smith and joseph and see who blooms

Goalie is the only ? - why is that familiar

Disagree, penguins are a better team than last year. They actually have depth. You have to give credit, Pittsburgh won that Karlsson deal. Got the best player without giving much up at all and was able to dump Petry and Granlund

They don't care, they're going to burn it down to the studs in less than 5 years anyways, they're going for it now.

I can only pray that they fail, and that bothers me because I don't have anything intrinsically against Pittsburgh but as long as Dubas is running that team I hope they fail catastrophically.

Adding Karlsson to RD with Letang already there at the cost of $10 million seems a little bit of a luxury, since you're now paying $16 million for the top 2 pairs of one side of your blueline... but falls into the Dubas hypothesis that you can collect talent and somehow it will gel. The great thing about this latest Dubas "bet" is Leafs fans have no skin in the game.

Immigration is another thing, although they don't all land in Toronto...but I think it's something like 700k people are coming into this country and we're already experiencing a housing shortage.

I have done pretty well for myself but I think owning 1 property or maybe 2 (main + cottage) should be it - no need to own like 10 places for rental income...some people or their kids might actually have a chance to own a home some day this way.
1 mortgage per SIN. No SIN? No mortgage

We've been discussing how Klingberg (and Barrie) were poor fits with the Leafs. Letang and Karlsson on the same blueline seems like a poor fit as well. Maybe Letang is being moved? The Pens have traded away their top 2 RH PK defenders in this deal. We'll see how this works. It seems like a classic big splash deal without considering any of the other implications of the deal.

This should help with the Leafs trade front a lot of jams were held up because of it. Still pretty dead with a lot of talks and all but some soft feels have been put out

Pittsburgh has probably done just fine to change the supporting cast around the core (save for losing some depth on the blueline and any risk assumed in going from DeSmith to Nedeljkovic for the backup role). Putting aside the flurry of offseason movement though, the core of Crosby, Malkin and now Karlsson will still have to lead the way for them.

I haven’t seen the details yet, but dependent on cost and retention seems like a great move for the Pens right now and I thought they always made the most sense for Karlsson trade. You’ve got a few years left of Malkin, Crosby and Letang and then all 3 are retiring. You’re going for it and Karlsson is about as impact of a player as you can get.
Well the penguins are your second favourite team you stated you are happy with the deal

I like that trade a lot for the Pens. A 1st and a 2nd to get an asset to help milk the very last bits of Crosby and Malkins competitiveness is good value.

Sharks do okay too. Not a great return, but they get a 1st with minimal retention involved.

I think this trade really only makes sense for a team like the Pens. You swing for the fences during the last few years of Crosby & companies quality years, because without a major addition, they're not competing. As they don't really have assets, going for a risky big contract player whose value is down is the only real option.

Otherwise the Karlsson contract, especially at only 1.5M retained, is too risky for almost every other team.

Sharks did as expected. Retained 1.5M AND took a capdump back, and only got a 1st and 2nd for a 3X Norris winner who just won another Norris. Some of their fans were expecting much more, which wasn't going to happen (unless they retained more, which I think they should have).

Yeah oddly enough rutta would have been the ideal complimentary number 3 for that reason behind the two long hairs

Just dont take penalties

Another perfect illustration of the Faustian nature of these gigantic contracts for 30+ star players. For the team, they are handcuffed by the limited possible destinations and are forced to take a mediocre return. For the player, he doesn't end up in the best of possible situations if team success is the player's objective. Here the player is ending up on an old team with probably 4 future Hall of Famers but a long shot to win the Stanley Cup as no team with superstars this old have ever been Cup winners.

Let's see how it goes. Their regular season will only matter in terms of qualifying for the playoffs and preparing for those playoffs. What often happens with this sort of team construction is that no one relishes the thought of facing them in the playoffs but injuries and team balance issues make them marginal playoff spot contenders and they often miss the playoffs entirely.
