This trade had Dubas' name written all over it. l'm glad it happened in Pittsburgh and not here.
Yeah I cringed at the thought of Karlsson @ 8m for 4 more years here when it was rumoured SJ was willing to retain 3+m. Now imagine Karlsson @ 10m for 4 more years here. Might work for the Pens as I am guessing they want to compete hard for the last few years of Sid and Geno. I'm guessing EK65 has at least one more excellent year in him.

It is a typical Dubas trade. A little complicated, definitely some risk reward elements, probably cuter than it has to be.

I
ove the fact that the same press that would give him a C+ if he made this deal for the Leafs gives him an A+ in Pitt

You said it.

Maybe, maybe not. Will Sullivan allow him to roam free and leave Jarry up to dry, or will he expect some sort of D from Karlsson?

Unless his game fell off a cliff this summer he should not decline too much this year. As for D, I heard that given how bad SJ was, he didn't pay much attention to playing D. I expect him to be better playing with Sid.

I heard the same, and I don't buy it.

If your core is as old as Pittsburgh the last thing you should do is be trading 1st round picks.
PIT ownership group has made it pretty clear they are not wasting Crosby's last years.

This is shocking literally no one in the hockey world that they are moving assets and making one more push
Plus, PIT also got back a prospect and a pick from SJS somehow too

It's not a Dubas thing, it's a "best player in the world and one of the best sidekicks in the world are close to retirement and we're going to be in pain after they leave anyway, so let's milk it and throw everything on the table instead of going quietly into the night" thing, that would've been done by any GM brought in this offseason

From Feb 28th he played 22 games and was a -24 which roughly coincided with the Meier trade. He was -2 for the 60 games before that. I think the collapse of the team those last 2 months took some of the shine off his season. Nobody was playing decent D around him and the goalies weren't making saves. He will look a lot better with Pittsburgh so long as he remains healthy.

Why would you want to?

From a Leafs perspective I wouldn't touch that contract with a 10 foot pole,.it's worth the risk for Pitt but that 10M contact runs for another 4 years yet
Yup.

Pittsburgh is going to blow up that team in spectacular fashion the moment Crosby and Malkin retire. They don't care about 4 years because they won't be competitive 4 years from now regardless.

They have more positive value assets to rent out in 2-4 years when it’s finally time to blow it up than they did before the trade. Petry and Granlund are both in cap dump territory that would have cost them futures to get rid of.

They either get a few last kicks at the can or they trade a 5mil Karlsson for a couple 1sts. Even if his game drops off a bit I can’t see him bringing back less than McCabe or Orlov, let alone trash like Chiarot.

Pitt without a competitive team always flirts with bankrupcy

Hope dubas doesn’t mess this up

It was messed up already before Dubas got there. They've only made two first round picks in the last eight years... before this trade. Their prospect pool is clearly bottom five in the league already... so trading away one more first and second didn't really do much more than was already done.

and yes, they will be an absolutely terrible team as soon as Crosby and Malkin are done. But, they really don't have much in the way of assets that would assist with a rebuild, if they traded them... and clearly Crosby, Malkin and Letang want to stay... so, only choice is to try one last time.

Pittsburgh certainly has had financial issues when they haven't iced a competitive team, but the NHL has kept Arizona afloat for how long... can't see them letting Pittsburgh fold.

Pittsburgh is probably one of the richer ownership groups now with FSG owning them

Their portfolio includes the Red Sox in MLB and Liverpool I believe in BPL

Pens can likely afford to do have high cash outflow abd take on bad deals when their rebuild begins for picks like the leafs did back in 2014-2016

Obviously that 1 year $4M deal for Dumba wasn't available in July but I'd trade that deal for the Klingberg deal. Dumba's a more rounded NHL defender. I suspect Klingberg's going to drive us crazy this year.
No doubt he's going to have his braindead moments or really poor defending moments. Hopefully the good he can do will outweigh the bad.

Klingberg struggled last season on a bad ducks team and it carried over to Minnesota, but the offensive talent is there still. If he can get back to that, it will be beneficial for us.

I'm not a fan of the Klingberg signing, nor would I have been of signing Dumba...

That being said.. Klingberg put up 13 points in his 21 games with Minnesota... almost as many as the 16 points Dumba had all year, regular season and playoffs.

If we needed help offensively from the back end, Klingberg was the better option.

I’m pretty set with this forward group.

Knies - Matthews - Bertuzzi
Robertson - Tavares - Marner
Jarnkrok - Domi - Nylander
Lafferty - Kampf - Reaves

Our goaltending is set as well.

Samsonov - Woll

I’m hoping Treliving can make a change or two on the blueline before camp starts.

If this trade happened for us, 100% bad move.

EK is 33, not 43, he needs to be good while the core of Pittsburgh is.

The amount of people saying this trade is bad (for anyone) is mind-boggling to me.

If we made the trade... terrible.

While true, about FSG being asset rich, look at how they spend their money, in regards to Liverpool. As a fan, I can say that they’re in hot water with the fanbase

Depends on the hit... if it was 10 million... no thanks, would have been too much risk.

Would have immediately solved our issue of no offense from the backend.

Rielly - Liljegren
McCabe - Karlsson

Assuming Brodie would have had to go the other way.
