I agree with you in spirit that Matthews is a far better player than Aho. Completely. But the last sentence is the kind of sentiment that really gets the Leafs in trouble as the worst combination of arrgogance meets unpreparedness.

Aho is a legitimate top line center with 2 way abilities and is the best forward on a team as good, slightly better, or has different strengths than Toronto. Matthews has a better ceiling any given night though. But conversely any given night you don't give a player like Aho the respect he and his team deserves, they'll embarrass the Leafs and Matthews.

Matthews was injured all last year and still performed better than Aho, I actually don't think the sentence is that crazy, a hyperbole, sure, but it holds some truth.

Canes are also a good team, but super overrated. Have they won a single third round game? It isn't like they are on the verge of the cup final every year. As soon as they play the Atlantic, they fold.

I wonder if we get the Brian Elliott news today or tomorrow. A lot of smoke there over the last week or two that perhaps he could be the 3rd stringer going into camp. I really don't know why Brian Elliott of a goaltenders but if he's willing to play in the AHL as a 38 year old... sure I guess.

I really hope we get Matthews and Nylander news over the next week as well. That can't go on all summer.

So if you trade Jarnkrok for futures/no cap back and swap holmberg for hilderby on day 1 of the season this roster would be $217 from maximizing ltir. Then you swap hilderby for holmberg and can run 13-7-2 for the season with $43k of room before any further roster adjustments

What the hell are you talking about?

Aho is a 1C with significantly better offensive production over his career, plays a more important position with significantly better defense and just got less than 10M over an 8 year term

Nylander thinking he's worth 10M is a joke and he should be laughed out of the room
While I agree with your statements, again I’m bringing up the tax situation here. Much more bang for your buck on payday. Sure Nylander takes 8.8-9m on a
most US based teams but here it’s a bigger chunk lost.

Sure, but there are benefits to playing in Toronto that places like Carolina don't have, like access to endorsements etc. Players can't use the tax situation in Canada as a reason to ask for tons more money while ignoring the positives that come from playing here.

There aren't a lot of goalies left of any quality, and you are never going to get a "great" goalie who would be willing to be the third stringer, play some in the AHL.

This is a list of goalies who weren't signed as of two weeks ago... I'm not sure any of these guys have signed since, but it's not an impressive list by any stretch of the imagination.

News on Matthews and Nylander would be great, hoping for Matthews to be $12.x, and Nylander $9.2ish... prepared to be disappointed anyway...lol

We have four contract spots left, after signing Abruzzese, so I hope we sign a goalie, a forward and a D. We could go one of two ways with the forward and D... either we go for experience, or a risk on someone bouncing back.

List of D (two weeks old)

The other item we are waiting on, is the 2018 Canadian Junior announcement.. Comtois and Foote are intriguing if cleared.

Some other players still available include.... Heinen, ZAR, Motte, Erne, Bear, Holden, Gagner, Pool Party and Hajek

So looking ahead to 24/25 our tight year.. we would potentially have

52.378 million allocated to 9 forwards. Knies holmberg reaves kampf jarnkrok tavares marner matthews at 13.5 nylander at 9.4

10.6 allocated to 3 dmen rielly mccabe and timmins

766667 to woll

Total: 63.745 of estimated 87.5. 73% of available allocated. Players of importance that would need decisions are:

Samsonov
Liljegren
Then perhaps domi bertuzzi brodie. 3 forwards 3 dmen 1 goalie needed at an average of 3.4 available per player without extras on the roster

I think regardless of the intention of this tight year i would like to see some trade targets with term looked at. Similar in concept to the mccabe deal but looking at lafferty type salaries, younger guys, forwards or defence that ideally come with 3 year contracts

Who we got for targets? Guys that have their feet wet but maybe looking for opportunity and at worst can support from the third pair or 4th line as we contend after tavares

Lets be productive and come up with some forward thinking trade ideas?

2023 and Aho is signing an 8 year deal for a mill less than what Marner got in 2019

This franchise is cooked

2019-2020 - 81.5
2022-2023 - 83.5

The upper limit has only gone up 2.4% since Marner signed.

Marner signed for 13.38 %
Aho signed for 10.38 %

While Marner has been the objectively better player. Still think Marner was overpaid, but the Aho deal isn’t some significant improvement on the Marner deal other than term.

Trade ideas are challenging at this point, as we don't really know which teams will be making big changes. I'd have to think Calgary would be wondering about a rebuild of some sort, if the names that are rumoured to want out, leave... maybe they'd be willing to part with a Weegar for example. BUt 2024 also has a huge list of UFA players. 2024 NHL Free Agents Tracker

Nah not 'names' but for example before last year going and prying will borgen from seattle or tolvanen from nashville

He might be willing to play in the AHL as a 38 year old... but only in Toronto where the set-up is essentially NHL quality... and he's still going to make $500K or more...

I'd rather not even bother with Elliott and roll the dices on youth or at least a 3rd stringer that isn't way past the expiry date. But there is a need for a 3rd stringer with some form of experience for sure. Not a big deal at the end of the day and he could be a good mentor for the Marlies and a good soldier on the bench. I just hope they don't prioritize him getting games with the Marlies.

Cooley is worth more than Nylander + Brodie IMO

I don't think he is as good as he is being talked about, but I think his value is super high.
While Cooley's value is pretty high, I think we are overvaluing prospects some. I just don't see why this move makes any sense for Arizona. They aren't close to competing, so Nylander and Brodie just don't make any sense at all for them.

btw.. Not sure why he changed his mind, but he's leaving Minnesota.

It's going to be hard to find a vet goalie that's going to play in the AHL, the only good thing about playing in the AHL is the team is located in Toronto. My first choice is Halak, followed by Elliot.

They need some insurance in that role just incase. I wonder if possible to have Woll+Sammy as the 1/2 and then have someone like Halak as the 3rd option but he doesn't play any AHL games, just is on the roster and practices with the Leafs. I remember Simmonds doing this towards the end of last year.
